What’s Happening at McKendree? Good Things! August 27, 2016

Our Mission – Glorifying God by making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

THIS WEEK AT McKENDREE!

SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICES are regularly at 9am and 11am (on Fifth Sundays we have one combined worship service at 10am). This Sunday is the last week of our sermon series, “Don’t Miss Your Exit!” Often we are so distracted by our surroundings, we miss getting off on the right exit. The right exit is where God is directing us, not a place or destination. God desires that we discover and discern His direction so that we are clear about our faith steps on the journey. How do we know when to exit? Let’s journey together and see where God is leading us so we don’t miss getting on the right exit.

LIFE GROUP SIGN-UPS THIS SUNDAY!! Do you belong to a Life Group? McKendree Church has a variety of Life Groups for men, women, couples, mixed men and women, moms, and even for couponers. Some groups meet here at the church and others meet in various locations in Nashville and Brentwood. Some are morning groups, some meet in the evening, some at noon. Our groups are designed to be Missional, Discipling, Nurturing, and Accountable. Our new semester of Life Groups is starting soon! If you don’t belong to a Life Group, be sure to sign up Sunday! Sign-up sheets will be on the tables at the front and back entrances of the church. If you can’t make it on Sunday, but want to sign up for a Life Group, or if you’d like more information about our Life Groups, contact Ruth Baggett in the church office (615-271-2600 or [email protected]).

REFRESH! is our mid-week gathering. We meet in the first floor chapel each Wednesday, 12:00- 12:30pm. This short time of worship includes prayers, hymns, a message and Holy Communion. Everyone is invited to attend.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY Our Adult Bible Study meets at 6pm in the Pastor’s office. We are in a study from the book Forgiveness: Making Peace with the Past by Douglas Connelly. The lesson for August 31 is “Out of Debt!” and the reading assignment is Mathew 18:21-35. Everyone is welcome to join us!

BAPTISMS If you are interested in being baptized, please contact Ruth in the church office at 615- 271-2600 or [email protected]. ******************* MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES

The Conference Office has requested the following items: box fans garden sprayers (2-gallons only) flat shovels 25-foot extension cords Donations of goods MUST be turned in by this Sunday, so they will go out with the truck on Monday. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) can always use cash to purchase extra needed items. Donations can be made ... 1. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. God's blessings on you as you give!

THE ENCOUNTER@EDGEHILL will meet Sunday, September 4 at 6pm at Edgehill Café. This is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, and multi-class movement and extension ministry of McKendree for the purpose of building bridges of hope through the love of Jesus Christ. Edgehill Café is the first of several locations planned for Nashville neighborhoods including MetroCenter, 12 South and Music Row. The Encounter seeks to extend McKendree’s mission of making disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world by engaging in:

 Vital conversations about gospel and reconciliation  Compassionate relationships with all people  Life giving action that moves us beyond our comfort and complacency into the mission field of Nashville neighborhoods and beyond where God is calling us and waiting for us. While there may be some elements of worship at a typical Encounter, the focus of each gathering is face to face conversations around tables. In these risky, vulnerable small group conversations around tables we seek to confront issues of privilege, racism, and classism that divide, to hear the call to God’s beloved community and then be invited to transformative engagement in the communities of Nashville. The Encounter@Edgehill meets at 6PM the first Sunday of each month at the Edgehill Café, 1201 Villa Place, Nashville, TN. For more information, contact Rev. Stephen Handy ([email protected]) or Rick Quinn ([email protected]). URGENT NEED! We desperately need men’s clothing for our clothes closet! Our shelves on the men’s side of the room are almost bare. We need shoes, pants, shorts, pullover shirts, t-shirts, underwear and socks, especially sizes large, extra-large and up. You may bring your donations to the church on Sunday or to the church office during the week. Thank you!

CLOTHES CLOSET VOLUNTEER We need a volunteer (or volunteers) to help with the clothes closet. We need adults who can open the door and greet our guests, assist (if needed) with finding clothes, smile and let our guests know about our Tuesday meal, and Sunday services. The church office is always open for assistance if our volunteers need help. If you can give an hour or two, one morning or afternoon a week, please contact Ruth in the church office (615-271-2600, [email protected]).
