Take precautions when using a rental car. The threat of car-jacking continues to escalate. Car-jackers target rental vehicles because the drivers are usually out-of-town travelers and easy victims. The more exotic or flashy the car you choose, the more you and/or the vehicle become likely targets for crime.

Please take the following precautions to lessen your vulnerability to car-jackers:

o Do not rent a convertible. o Travel with a cellular phone if it is appropriate. Check with management regarding your department's policy. o Know where you are going before you get there. Mapquest o Do not tell the rental agency where you are staying. o Do not stop in an isolated place for any reason. o Park only in well-lit areas and drive only on well-lit, main streets. o Lock the doors and hide valuables while driving. Keep the windows closed if possible. o Do not get out of your car if you have an accident or experience car problems on the open highway or in a sparsely populated area. Switch on your hazard lights and wait for a police officer. o Do not stop and get out if you see an accident or stranded motorist on the highway. Proceed to the nearest telephone and call the highway patrol with the information. o Remember that law enforcement color is red. If you are being pursued by a car with flashing lights that are any other color, proceed with caution.
