CREATE A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY

As environmental community planners, your research team has been chosen to plan a “green” community and develop a sustainable environmentally house, which not only preserves our natural resources, but also demonstrates sustainable “Best Management Practices” or BMPs. This is an opportunity to create a “rhythm” to express the interconnections of air, water and plants upon the earth.

Group project: Create a sustainable community for a local watershed around 30,000 people and 15,000 households and a sustainable house for a family of 5. Your community and house will be displayed at Open House, June 10th.

Your Green Open Space Community should include:

Water - Efficient source, treatment and waste system

Shelter - Support “green” building, limit pollution, recycling (LEED certification)

Food – Support local agriculture, grow your own organic

Energy -Systems that reduce carbon emissions, alternatives such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal etc.

Transportation - Efficient “green” means of travel, location

Sub Topics

Government: integrate ecology, create guidelines, laws, taxes, schools, and health care

Economics: green business and industry

Cultural Center: music, arts, sports/ recreation facilities, and religious institutions

Group Responsibilities:

1. Nominate a group member to serve on the WCC (Watershed Community Committee) to establish group regulations, design a rubric, approve blue prints, hear grievances, mediate difficulties and award certificates.

2. Create an artistic rendering of your community with research ideas and concepts on all project categories (Include topographic features and compass rose for orientation of the community); the Watershed Community Committee will approve this.

3. Create a detailed blueprint on graph paper that demonstrates and thoroughly explains all the research done by each group member. In some fashion, designate on the blueprint, who was responsible for specific research and section of the Blueprint. Each group member should be the one to present their section of the blueprint to the WCC. 4. Build your community on a 2 X 4 board. Please build using all recycled materials

5. Create an artistic rendering of your House with research ideas and concepts on all project categories (Include topographic features and compass rose for orientation of the House).

6. Create a blueprint and model of a sustainable “green” house design. Include topography, landscaping, run-off, building materials, insulation, water and energy source and water treatment, recycling etc. The goal should be to produce a carbon neutral or net zero house.

7. Build your house on a 2 X 2 piece of wood. Please use as many recycled materials as possible. Your communities and house are due June 14. (Open House for Parents)

8. Include an eBook that explains how your community is sustainable, shows elements of your process and persuades people to move/live in your community. Should include persuasive essays, sketches, short videos that help support your green BMPs.

9. Create a Billboard to advertise/highlight your Community and style of living, homes (Out in the hallway)

Individual Responsibilities:

1. In your sketchbook, complete four (4) annotated sketches of sustainable BMP Best Management Practices from your community: water (treatment, waste, runoff), food, energy, transportation, etc.

2. In your sketchbook, complete annotated sketch of your house. Highlight and explain at least 5 of the “green best management” features.

3. Each member should build a different 3D model of one best management practice of his/her town.

4. A persuasive essay should accompany the model on why the town or house chose to use this BMP. Use current research and data to back up your practices. (Cite your sources, each group member should have a different topic)
