“BY GOD’S GRACE WE GROW IN FAITH, SHARE JESUS CHRIST, AND SERVE ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE!” Pastor’s Page July 2016

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—“ (Ephesians 2:8 NRSV)

The above verse from Ephesians is the crux of our Lutheran theology—that salvation is a free gift of a loving God! And that salvation is found in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! +

It’s only July, and I hate to look forward to September. I still have much I want to do this summer, including worshipping with you on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. If we are to share the good news of our faith with one another—we must hear of God’s grace every time we gather. For it is truly good news—that in Christ we are loved, forgiven, and promised eternal life. Thanks be to God!

And thanks be to God that an incredible event is looming before us in the Lutheran church. October 31, 2016 begins the year-long commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. On October 31st, 1517, Martin Luther nailed the 95 thesis to the door of the Wittenberg Church. His intent was to start an academic debate on the subject of indulgences and God’s grace. Instead, and unintentionally, this act by Professor Luther started the Protestant Reformation.

Our plans in the Allegheny Synod is to spend the next year studying the Reformation and our Lutheran history. Many events are in the planning stages at this time. Part of the plan is that the year-long commemoration will culminate with a huge Synod-wide Worship Service held at a central location in October of 2017—hopefully with our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters in the Synod. What a wonderful experience that will be!

Over the next year, beginning this fall in the Adult Forum class, we are going to spend a lot of time studying and discussing the Reformation, Lutheran theology, Church history, and Lutheran history. We are first going to watch and discuss two DVD series. The first DVD series is called, “Reformation Roots.” This is a history of the Reformation in Europe. The second DVD series is called, “We must Plant the Church: A history of Lutherans in America.” Both DVD series look interesting and informative.

I will be looking for and sharing with you more study materials as the year goes on.

So, let’s enjoy the summer! Come and worship! Come and hear of God’s grace! You are so missed when you’re not here! God’s grace and peace are with you! Pastor Kevin ALLEGHENY SYNOD ASSEMBLY REPORT June 3 – 4, 2016

Attended – Virginia Ankeny and Joyce Long

The Assembly opened on Friday at 8:30 a.m. with morning prayer and song. In our packets we received bumper stickers that read “Jesus Loves You.” This lead to singing “Jesus Loves You” as well as “Jesus Loves Me.” After Bishop Rhyne's Report and Synod Officer's reports we listened to the first of three presentations on the Reformation by Dr. Jane Stohl. Her presentations were very informative on Luther's writings and life as well as filled with “salty” expressions and ideas inspired by Luther and her experiences as a pastor and mother. Dr. Stohl left quite an impression.

The first ballot resulted in Marlin Plymette being seated for Synod council for another three years. Sam Dunkle won both the council seat and vice president position, but not being able to serve both, Marlin, as the only other person running, was declared the one for the council seat for a three-year term.

After lunch, Pastor Ron Reed was remembered during the “Remembrance of the Departed.” Among many wonderful comments, he was remembered for being a “hugger.”

Friday afternoon brought many other reports – some being from LAMPa (Lutheran Advocacy Ministry of PA), Lutheran Campus Ministry at Penn State, Lutheran Disaster Response, Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church (two missionaries from Kenya were present), Women of the ELCA, and ALSM. The Reference and Council Report included a resolution which was adopted entitled “God's Work. Our Hearts and hands … Memorial for Military Personnel, Veterans, and their Families.” This resolution included many things that we at St. Paul's already do – praying for the enlisted and presentation of the “Prayer Book for the Armed Forces – as well as new things to undertake in support of the military members.

Following dinner was Worship with Ordination. The intern, Jonathan Adams, who preached here on April 10 was ordained during the service and participated in Communion. He will be pastor for the Benscreek- Boswell churches. The offering for the evening yielded $1,077.81 for World Hunger.

Saturday morning assembly also opened with morning prayer and song, accompanied by Pastor Nathan Pile playing guitar and Camp Sequanota summer camp staff. Beth Belsterling's sons, Nathan and Joshua, were among the staff and Joshua was also one of the guitar players. It was noted that Camp Sequanota has three openings on their board – those with financial and marketing skills would be appreciated.

Also in the morning, those attending the ELCA Churchwide Assembly August 8-13 in New Orleans were commissioned. The new pastors and vicars in the Allegheny Synod were also introduced.

The Allegheny Synod budget was presented and explained. Due to the overwhelming response of congregations, there was an over $11,000 surplus for the 2016 budget. This enabled the distribution of funds for programs that were give a zero line item in the 2017 budget. The Synod's fiscal year is from February 1 to January 31. After further explanations and comments, the 2018 budget was approved.

Virginia and I thank you for the opportunity to attend the Assembly. The Bishop and all presenters worked very hard to make the reports and presentation interesting, and I think they succeeded. The whole event was worth the time spent and much was learned. Thank you Respectfully, Joyce Long and Virginia Ankeny Allan & Regina Vorhauer
