2017 District 7 Photography Contest 2:00 – 8:00

Location: LIT

Competition Equipment Requirements: 1. Digital SLR camera 2. Camera battery 3. Memory card 4. USB card reader 5. USB jump drive 6. Computer/Laptop loaded with Adobe Photoshop CS4 or higher*** (A lab will not be available this year)

Optional: 1. Hand-held light meter 2. External flash 3. Tripod 4. Extra batteries & chargers 5. Extra memory card

Scope of the Competition: 2:00 - Check In/Orientation

2:10 – 2:20 - Part 1: (10 minutes) Students will turn in 2 photos mounted to a 16”X20” board with a 16”x20” over matt. These prints may be 11”X14” to 16”X20” in size and should demonstrate technical proficiency and artistic ability. Print quality as well as mounting neatness will be evaluated. Students must also present a one page written resume.1 2:20 - 3:20 - Part 2: (60 minutes) Students will have 60 minutes to shoot their field assignment. All shooting must be done in manual mode. They may use tripods, light meters, flashes, and different lenses they bring with them to get the shots they want.2 By 4:30- Part 3: Edit and turn in the field assignment.

1 Print Competition 1. Each student will submit two photographs to be judged and displayed at the competition. Requirements for prints are as follows: a. Print size must be an 11"x14" – 15x19 b. All prints must be mounted to a 16"x20" black foam core board (¼" preferred) with a 16"x20" black over mat c. The total thickness of the finished piece may be no thinner than 1⁄8" and no thicker than 1⁄2" e. All prints must have a label placed on the back upper middle portion that includes the following information: 1. Maker’s name 2. Instructor’s name 3. School name and address 4. High school or college designation 5. Maker’s cell phone 2. These prints must be brought at the beginning of the contest. Prints received after 2:10 will receive a penalty. By 5:30 - Part 4: Complete the conceptual piece and turn it in. Contestants will get a conceptual assignment to complete using Photoshop to demonstrate their ability to manipulate digital images.

By 6:00 - Part 5: Complete the digital editing piece and turn it in.

By 8:00 – Part 5-8: Complete the written test, troubleshooting, studio, and job interview. Contestants will be given a lighting pattern that they must create using a single studio light. They will have 5 minutes to create the lighting pattern and take the picture (they will get to take 3 images). Contestants will also complete a short interview as well as a 50 question written test3. Contestants will be asked to identify standard digital troubleshooting problems.

Time: 6 hours

Clothing Requirements: (No jackets required)

For men: Official SkillsUSA white polo shirt with black dress slacks, black socks and black dress shoes.

For women: Official SkillsUSA white polo shirt with black dress slacks or knee-length skirt, black socks or skin-tone hose and black, closed-toe dress shoes.

2 P 2.0 — Apply the knowledge and skill needed to conduct a photographic field assignment and produce a contact sheet for judging 2.1 Demonstrate technical proficiency in the areas of proper manual exposure and focus 2.2 Demonstrate artistic ability through use of standard rules of art and design including, but not limited to: rule of thirds, balance, leading lines, worm’s/bird’s eye, etc. 2.3 Demonstrate an ability to capture images that adhere to the “theme” of the assignment 2.4 Demonstrate the ability to format, edit and save the contact sheet using contest guidelines
