African Canadian Studies Photo Essay Term 2 Project

Project Assigned: April 23, 2009 Presentation/Due Dates: May 26, 2009

PART 1:

You are required to select, research, organize and present a topic related to ASC 11. You and a partner will be responsible to complete a photo essay using the program Windows Movie Maker. Your photo essay will consist of the following:

. Choose a topic from the list provided . You must include an introduction to your film and include information where explanation or description is required . In addition you must have a minimum of 15 photos . Set to music appropriate to illustrate the topic (**please be sure your music is appropriate to be heard in a classroom setting, if you are unsure please come and see me**) . Length of 3-4 minutes . Final Slide of References for all Pictures (make note as you collect your pictures or complete this as you go)

You will have one research period and two periods to work on the computers.

Topics: YOU MUST CONNECT YOUR TOPIC TO THIS HISTORY CLASS! Do not repeat things that have been discussed in class (for example, do not use MLK, Harriett Tubman, etc…). Also, try not to touch on anyone else’s topic. Your information should be new and interesting!

Individually, you will write a reflection (500 words) to help you consider, reflect upon, and learn from the information you have discovered in creating your photo essay. You will answer the following questions:

•Why did you choose your topic? Be specific! •Explanation of the topic, who the person or group was and what was so significant about them or if it is an event, why and how it occurred and why it is important •Be sure to answer the 5 W’s and explain the significance of this topic •What specific photo or photos were particularly interesting or provocative to you and why? (Please provide a description so I will know those you are referring to in your photo essay) • How and why did you choose the music to go with your topic? • Why did you like/dislike about the format of this project? Did you enjoy or dislike learning in this manner? What would you change about the project?
