PREFACE

It gives me great pleasure in bringing out report on Fifth Economic Census 2005 for the State of Jharkhand.

The Fifth Economic Census was conducted in 2005 by the Central Statistical Organisation in collaboration with Directorate of Statistics and Evaluation, Jharkhand with a view to meet the demand of various users of data on the unorganised sector of the economy and the nature of large number of small units which are subject to high rate of mobility and mortality. Under this Census a complete enumeration of entrepreneurial activities other than crop production and plantation was carried out. The present report gives detailed analysis supported by tables on various aspects of economic activities at the district levels and for rural/urban areas to fulfill the needs of a range of data users both in the academic and administrative fields.

I would like to put on record the encouragement and guidance provided by the Central Statistical Organisation, Government of India and their officers, who provided technical guidance in carrying out the herculean task of conducting this census. My sincere thanks are due to the Chief Secretary, Development Commissioner and my predecessor Mr. Jagpal Singh Burjia for their full co- operation at the various stages of the census work. The active participation of Divisional Commissioners/Deputy Commissioners during the conduct of the census is worth appreciation and without which this census would not have taken place successfully.

I would also like to place on record my appreciation of hard work put in by District Statistical Officers/Assistant Economic Census Commissioners/Charge Officers/Supervisors/Enumerators who were instrumental for successful conduct of census.

My sincere thanks are due to the officers and staffs of the Directorate of Statistics and Evaluation, Jharkhand who teamed together to successfully plan and conduct the census and bring out the report.

It is hoped that results contained in this report would be useful to the Planners, Policy makers, Research workers and others who have positive interest in the developmental activities of the state. (Arun Kumar Singh) Secreatary-cum-Census Commissioner
