1. Actions from the College of Business and Economics

1.1 Program Change – Requirement Change – COBE (Undergraduate)

Liz Hachten questioned why she and Dean Travis did not see the consultation for particular change. Hephzibah Kumpaty, Chemistry Professor, was the one who signed the consultation for Stephanie Douglas. Liz Hachten questioned if this course is only for Science Business, but then Stephanie Douglas explained that this course is very individualized when it comes to science courses. There was a suggestion raised that the title to be changed to say Business and Science Sustainability so this course reflects both the Business and Science. Liz Hachten suggested that we table this course until the next meeting since this isn’t a deadline meeting. Bob Leitheiser and Zach Oster moved to table area III. B.1.1.2. until our next meeting.

C. Curricular Actions from the College of Letters & Sciences

1. Actions from the Department of Math

Zach Oster and Bob Leitheiser and moved approval of area III C.1. 1.1. After much discussion Angela Harlan asked that the committee confirm approval by a show of hands; 6 in favor, two votes apposed and one abstained.

Discussion: George Ferencz, Jenny Petersen and Lynn Gilbertson suggested that the name be changed to indicate that the course is not simply preparing students for an exam. Angela Harlan and Liz Hachten stated that the Putman competition has been around for a hundred years and is the preeminent mathematics competition for undergraduate college students in the U.S. and Canada. Zach Oster also commented that it is great for Math students who are looking to apply graduate schools. Angela Harlan does understand the request for change, but was unwilling to make the change as a friendly amendment, as the competition is an important part of mathematics history, and the course is designed to prepare students for the exam.

1.1 New Course – MATH 281: Putnam Competition and Problem Solving

Zach Oster and Jennifer Anderson moved approval of area III C.1. 1.2: motion passed unanimously.

1.2 Course Change – Prerequisite change – MATH 442: Mathematical Statistics

D. Curricular Action from the College of Education and Professional Studies

1. Action from the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching

Reconsideration of a Motion for III. D. 1. 1.1. from John Zbikowski and Bob Leitheiser

Motion to amend approval of area III. D.1.1.1 by Bob Leitheiser and Lynn Gilbertson on the suggestion that the current proposal be edited to show that the department will be renamed, Department of Kinesiology and that the existing “prefix PEPROF…. Department minors” be removed. Return course back to the department to be updated and returned back to Becky Pfeifer. Motion passed unanimously.

Discussion: Jason Shurley explained to the committee that the department voted to change the department name to Kinesiology at a prior department meeting, something that was not stated with the request. He went on to explain that the balance of PEPROF courses would take on the new prefix and that their department was going to start streamlining prefix’s since they have so many. Angela Harlan again brought up that this was not as part of the initial intent to plan that was sent to UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee, who may have expressed concerns if this information had been in the intent to plan. Jason Shurley reaffirmed that the department plans to keep the Health and Human Performance major, so they felt it wasn’t an issue.
