Dear Colleague,

THE DR ALASTAIR SHORT MEMORIAL FUND TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP

Dr Alastair Short was tragically killed in 2003 and the Travelling Fellowship was set up in his memory. Alastair was a much loved GP and respected colleague who was able to draw the best out of people from all walks of life. His medical interests were: general practice, primary care, public health and medical education.

The Fellowship is for a maximum of £7,500 and is open to all Scottish Doctors training or established in General Practice and Public Health.

 In 2007 the award was won by Dr Kirstie Nicol who worked as a volunteer doctor in the Himalayan Rescue Clinic and carried out a study about altitude illness.  In 2008 the award was won by Dr Chris Ellis from Kinlochleven who has an interest in Major Ultra Marathons in the Scottish Highlands. He had a study tour to the University of Cape Town where Professor Tim Noakes is the leading world authority on the physiological and metabolic consequences of long distance running.  No award was made in 2009.  In 2010 Dr Clare Carolan was the recipient. She explored the evolution of health promoting palliative care in Victoria, Australia and made recommendations for practice in UK.  In 2011 Dr Iain Henderson a general practitioner with an interest in dermatology travelled to Rwanda and set up a tele-dermatology service at Gahini Hospital.  In 2012 two awards were made. One was to Dr Andrew Muray who used this to promote physical activity as part of the Government’s Public Health Awareness Campaign. He undertook the world’s most extreme marathon – the Ice Marthaon – and followed this by running seven ultra-marathons on seven continents within a week. This attracted media attention both in Scotland and internationally and this innovative message was used to both inform the pubic and health care practitioners about the benefits of physical activity.  The award was also given in 2012 to Dr Karen Leckie who travelled to Peru at co-morbidity and functional status of the elderly population and look at ways of improving the situation.  The Fellowship can be used for an individual project and to supplement an existing project which involves work abroad.
