Subject Verb Agreement Rules:

1) Singular nouns have plural verbs and plural nouns have singular verbs

2) IS goes with singular nouns and ARE goes with plural nouns

3) Watch out for nouns that come after their verbs

4) Always find the noun that is doing the action in question – look to see whether it is singular or plural

5) Nouns inside prepositional phrases cannot be the subject of a sentence.

6) Nouns inside nonessential parts of a sentence cannot be the subject of a sentence

a. Introductory phrases

b. Nonessential information in the middle of a sentence

c. A conclusion statement

7) Has goes with singular, have goes with plural

8) Compound nouns always have plural verbs. A compound noun is two or more nouns connected by an “and.”
