Students will learn to:  Use strategies to use identify words.  Infer word meanings using roots, prefixes, suffixes.  Define and understand important words.  Understand homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones.  Use dictionary and thesaurus to understand unknown words.  Read self selected books independently.  Use and apply comprehension strategies to understand text that is read, heard and viewed.  Expand vocabulary by reading a variety of printed materials.  Spell appropriate grade level words routinely and use resources to check spelling.  Communicate through spoken, written, and visual formats.  Read a variety of texts: o Legends/Folktales o Science Fiction o Biographies/Autobiographies o Information Books o Diaries/Journals o Poetry/Drama  Identify and discuss differences between fiction and nonfiction.  Identify author’s purpose, plot, theme, main idea, and supporting details.  Make inferences, draw conclusions, make generalizations by referencing text.  Conduct research for assigned projects from a variety of sources.  Use correct capitalization and punctuation.  Write for a variety of purposes and audiences.  Use appropriate verb tense, subject agreement, subject-verb agreement, and pronouns.  Use simple and compound sentences, regular and irregular verbs, adverbs, prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions.  Write paragraphs which have a topic sentence, details, coherence, elaboration, and a concluding statement.  Proofread and correct misspellings independently.  Create personal and imaginative narratives, letters, journals, diaries, recipes, poems.
