This year, the YSU English Festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary! To continue in the spirit with the National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature Gene Luen Yang’s Reading Without Walls Challenge, we are going to be Reading Into the Past! Both challenges ask students to read three books that are outside of their comfort zone. The same guidelines will apply, but instead of encouraging your students to read any three books that meet the criteria below, please have them choose books from among the past 40 years of English Festival books. All students from a participating English Festival school are eligible to participate, even if they will not be attending the Festival. Please send a list of participants to [email protected] by April 1, 2018. We will reward the school with the most students/most books read with a collection of the 2019 English Festival books.

The following list is organized by author, book title year. If more than one year follows the book title, that book was used in multiple years.

Reading Into the Past Challenge

1. Read a book about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you.

2. Read a book about a topic you don’t know much about.

3. Read a book in a format that you don’t normally read for fun. This might be a chapter book, a graphic novel, a book in verse, a picture book, or a hybrid book.

Bolded type is year, grade level, and guest author that year.
