North Forsyth Scholarship Newsletter October 2016 ACT Students can take the ACT this fall on December 10. The deadline for the December ACT is November 4. Students eligible for free or reduced lunch can see their counselor for a waiver which can be used to pay for an SAT or ACT. Students using a waiver may also obtain college application fee waivers. AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP Selection Criteria: Be United States citizens; Be current high school seniors who plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the United States for the entire 2017-2018 academic year; Demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in school, community or work-related activities; *Because reducing risk is woven into the fabric of the company, special consideration is given to achievements that empower society to mitigate risk through education and/or action in areas such as financial, environmental, health, safety and/or emergency preparedness Amount: $2,500, $10,000, or $25,000 Deadline: December 15, 2016 Contact: https://us.axa.com/axa-foundation/AXA-achievement-scholarship.html

COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK CFNC.org is holding their annual “College Application Week” November 14-18, 2016. We will be participating on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Students will be able to apply to many NC colleges with no fee. An active CFNC account is required to participate. Students should edit their account information to include their student number, which is required to apply to colleges and send transcripts through CFNC. We have invited classes to the media center throughout the day. See your counselor for more details or with questions

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS Please check with the college/university you are interested in attending to get information about any scholarships they offer, procedures for application, and deadlines you need to meet. You also want to find out admission application deadlines, FASFA information, and whether there are any other requirements (for example the CSS/Financial Aid Profile).

CSS/FINANCIAL AID PROFILE Certain Colleges require the PROFILE to be filed along with the FAFSA. Some of the North Carolina schools that required it for 2016-2017 included Davidson College, Duke University, Elon University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest University. There are also specific scholarships that require the PROFILE. Registrations for the PROFILE are accepted beginning October 1. Application can be found at www.collegeboard.com. The PROFILE must be submitted online.

ELKS MOST VALUABLE STUDENT Selection Criteria: Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need Amount: 400+ scholarships given, ranging from $4,000 - $50,000 Deadline: November 30, 2016 Contact: http://www.elks.org/scholars/scholarships/mvs.cfm

HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIP Selection Criteria: Demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need (preferably $50,000 or lower adjusted gross income per family), a good academic record (minimum GPA 2.0), commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society. LEVINE SCHOLARS PROGRAM Selection Criteria: Students planning to attend UNC-Charlotte. Unweighted GPA of 3.8-4.0 and score 1900- 2400 on the SAT or 29-36 on the ACT composite, demonstrate a commitment to community service, and possess a capacity for leadership. Includes full tuition, room & board, a laptop, and four summers of experiences. Amount: $90,000 Deadline: October 15, 2016 Contact: See Ms. Mickey in guidance to be considered for nomination

NORTH FORSYTH COLLEGE FAIR The second annual North Forsyth College Fair will be held in the Cartwright Gymnasium on Thursday, November 10, 2016. A wide variety of higher learning institutions will be represented for our students from 9- 12.

PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM Selection Criteria: Recognizes young people for outstanding volunteer service; committee will review the applications and select one student to represent North Forsyth; top students from each state are named state honorees Amount: $1000 + a Trip to Washington, DC Deadline: November 8, 2016 Contact: https://spirit.prudential.com/

RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM Selection Criteria: Academically talented, highly motivated, African American students who are currently seniors in high school and plan to pursue undergraduate degrees full-time. Possess a keen interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship and global citizenship. Students who apply by the November 1st (postmarked) deadline are considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program AND will have their application information forwarded to a select number of additional scholarship providers. Students applying by the final deadline of January 9th (postmarked) will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program only. Amount: $40,000 Contact: www.ronbrown.org

2 North Forsyth Scholarship Newsletter October 2016 Seniors planning to attend a four year college or university should sign up for a fall SAT or ACT. An early score is required in order to be considered for many scholarships. The remaining fall SAT Tests are given on November 5, and December 3. Contact: www.collegeboard.org.
