Developing World Outreach Initiative Spring 2010 Update

Pull out your Draeger tubes and sampling equipment, because something’s in the air. Can you detect all the aromatic hydrocarbons and microgametophytes? That’s right, flowers are blooming, pollen is in the air, and Spring is here!

With Spring upon us, it’s a good time to clean out your closets, tidy up your bookshelves, and donate you books to the DWOI’s ongoing book drive. Thanks to all those who already donated at our AIHA-NCS’s March dinner meeting! We gathered four large (and heavy) boxes of books and we are busy organizing them to send them to NGOs and Universities in Africa.

The DWOI has been busy lately, with great turn out for our monthly meetings. Some of the recent DWOI accomplishments include:

 Received AIHA support ($2000) to send your donated Industrial Hygiene books to Africa.

 Supported our partners at ANROAV (Asian Network for the Rights of Occupational Accident Victims at www. anroav .org) and AMRC (Asia Monitor Resource Center at www.amrc.org.hk) by purchasing AIHA international affiliate memberships for the OHS Coordinator of AMRC and the General Secretary of ANROAV.

 Coordinated funding to support staff members of ANROAV member organizations in Asia to attend IH training for Jakarta in March, Pune, India in April, and Manila, Guangzhou and Shanghai this summer and fall (including a $750 grant from National AIHA).

Interest in helping DWOI this Spring? There are a number of ways you can help DWOI.

 Donate your books. Michael Horowitz ([email protected]) is collecting donated OHS/IH books for shipment abroad.

 Donate your time. Colleen Thornton ([email protected]) is coordinating business travelers who can donate some of their time for pro-bono workshops, lectures, trainings or consultations with NGOs while abroad.

 Donate your expertise. Garrett Brown ([email protected]) is coordinating liaison efforts with partner groups, including putting together a AIHA-NCS mini-delegation to the 2010 conference of ANROAV in Indonesia on October 18-20th (contact Garrett at [email protected] for details).

 Donate you money. Richard Hirsh ([email protected] ) is collecting donations for all these efforts.

Consider joining us for our next one-hour DWOI meeting, Thursday, April 29, at 4pm.

You can join us in person at the Cal/OSHA offices in Oakland: 1515 Clay St., Suite 1301 or by phone:
