Medical Terminology Course Requirements and Overview Ms. Mahmood 281-641-7008 | [email protected]

Welcome to Medical Terminology! Medical Terminology is a semester-long course designed to help develop a working language of medicine through acquiring word-building skills, and learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. By relating terms to body systems, students understand the context and proper usage of words in a medical environment. These skills enhance the students’ ability to secure employment in related fields or pursue advanced education in the health care industry.

This class is an articulated high school course, which means that after successful completion, students may be eligible for college credit after enrolling in programs at participating two-year colleges in the state of Texas. For more information, check with your counselor or local college/university.

Class Materials (Please bring to class EVERYDAY!) : 1. At least 1 ½ in. 3 ringed binder with 5 dividers 2. Notebook paper 3. Index cards 4. Pens (blue or black ink) & Pencils 5. I recommend that each student have their own scissors, glue sticks, and color pencils

Class Information & Expectations: Beginning of class:  We have so many wonderful things to do this year that you won’t want to miss a minute – so, please get to class on time! Tardies are strictly enforced and will be handled by a House Office. You must be inside the classroom door when the tardy bell rings. Remember that tardies accumulate for the entire semester and may result in a loss of semester exam exemption status.  Upon entering the room, students should read the board and take appropriate action and then begin the day’s warm-up. The warm-up will be posted in the same place everyday and will be graded with binder checks.  Come to class prepared. Students should have supplies everyday. You will not be allowed to go to your locker once the bell has rang, so please don’t ask! During class:  Respect fellow classmates, all property, and the teacher.  Students should use the restroom, water fountain, and locker between classes.  Clean up after yourself  Students will not “pack up” until they are dismissed or instructed to do so by the teacher.  If absent, YOU will be responsible for obtaining any assignments, notes, handouts, or exams that you missed.

Electronic Devices:  Texting is prohibited from the tardy bell to the dismissal bell.  All phones must be silenced and put in your backpack during class time unless specifically instructed otherwise.  Cell phones are not permitted in the classroom on test days. They must be silenced and placed in your backpack prior to entering the classroom. All backpacks will be placed in the lab area and may be retrieved when the dismissal bell rings

Textbooks:  Class sets of textbooks are provided for each student’s use in the classroom. Proper treatment of the books is expected, no books on the floor PLEASE.

Make-Up Work:  Students will be expected to make up all work missed due to absences. Students are allowed the same number of days to complete make-up work as they were absent. Make-up work is not to be done during class.  It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make-up work. It is always a good idea to check the website any time you are absent. Make-up work not completed in the scheduled time will result in the student’s receiving zeros on those assignments.  If you are absent for a test, a make-up test must be taken within one week of the absence. Make-up tests cannot be taken during class time and must be made up during lunch or after school. Days and times for make- up tests will be communicated after each test.

Tutoring: Tutoring should be utilized any time you are having difficulty understanding the material or you have been absent. You cannot study effectively or learn the material if you do not understand it, so the best time to come in for tutoring is the moment you are confused – not the morning of the test! Tutoring is available during posted times. Check website or classroom for posted times.

Grades: Summative grades: Count 60% of the total nine weeks grade. - Tests: Upcoming test dates can be found online - Projects/ Group work: You will be required throughout the course to work in cooperative learning groups. Your grade will be based on participation, quality of work and presentation. - Notebook/binder checks: It is important to keep an organized record of all the materials learned in this class. To that end, periodic and random notebook and binder checks may occur. The proper method of organizing both can be found on my website and will be explained in class.

Formative grades: Count 30% of the total six weeks grade. - Daily Assignments - Homework - Daily quizzes
