Ecology Ecosystem Research Project

Introduction: A Travel Agency is trying to boost travel to different parts of the world by increasing their advertising and selling vacation packages (biome). Your group has been hired to make a presentation to sell a travel package (biome). Each group must pick a biome to research, create a booklet (like a travel brochure) and either use PowerPoint or create a poster to “sell” your biome. You may work in groups of 2-4.

Major Terrestrial Biomes to Choose From:

Tundra Taiga Temperate forest

Grasslands Desert Tropical forest

Necessary components of project: Travel Brochure/Booklet and Presentation

 Travel brochure/booklet which MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

1. A map showing where on the planet the ecosystem is found

2. Information about the climate/weather conditions for the biome and how it affects the animals/plants that live there. As a graphic, you may also provide charts or graphs detailing sunlight, snowfall, rainfall, etc.

3. Accurate information about 4 animals that live there (include pictures)

4. Accurate information about 4 plants that live there (include pictures)

5. At least 5 INTERESTING FACTS/ UNIQUE FEATURES about the biome.

6. An example of a food chain OR food web found in your biome.

7. At least 2 abiotic (non-living) factors found in your biome.

8. A works cited showing the resources used for your research.

 PowerPoint OR poster highlighting the following:

1. Location of the biome in the world.

2. What is the climate of your biome? Cold/warm? 3. Provide two interesting facts or unique features about your biome.

4. Provide an example of an animal and plant found in your biome.

5. What kinds of activities could people do in this location?

6. Take home message: Why would tourists/visitors want to visit your biome?

Process:

1. Choose your group members; no more than four in a group. You must tell me who is in your group (handout will be provided to fill out)

2. Choose the “vacation package” or in other words, the biome you would like to research. You must tell me which biome you are researching (handout will be provided to fill out).

3. Divide the work of the project among group members (a “roles” handout will be provided to each group group must decide what the role of each group member is and turn this into Ms. Petry at the end of class June 6th).

**Suggestion: If you are working in a group of two, one person could be working on the poster/PowerPoint and the other group member could be working on the booklet/brochure

If you are working in groups of four, half group members should be working on the brochure and the other half should be focusing on the PowerPoint/poster.

4. You will have three class days to work on this project (about an hour each class day). If it appears necessary, Monday June 11 may be used to wrap up projects this is TBD. Each day, the group will be responsible for turning in rough draft copies of what they have been working on to Ms. Petry (part of project grade).

Wednesday June 6 th:

Due: Group designations, what biome your group is researching, and what each group member will be doing for the project.

Location:

Thursday June 7:

Due: Rough draft/outline of what your brochure will look like AND a rough draft of what your poster/PowerPoint will look like. Each group member must note which part of the project they have helped with/worked on. Location:

Location:

***Again, I will check in with groups on Friday June 8th to see how well the projects are progressing if the majority of the class needs extra time, we will designate 45 minutes on Monday June 11th for completion. ***

5. Don’t limit yourself to just the internet. Also look at encyclopedias, books and magazines

6. Use as much creativity as possible when creating your booklet, make sure it is colorful, neat, and includes all required information!!!!!!!

**Remember, your goal is to sway the audience (in this case the class) to visit your biome. Make sure you sell it!!!!***

**Everyone MUST present; part of grade** Group Members Information Sheet:
