1. Lisa Young made the motion to approve the minutes from the November SCC meeting. Seconded by Kathy Cutler. All approved.
2. Principal’s Report: AVID Training: Cornell Notes and other study strategies are covered in an after-school class for teachers. The team members teaching the strategies have been AVID trained and many have worked in AVID schools. Jennifer Updike requested that information on Cornell Notes be sent home to parents. Jennifer Wilson mentioned that she likes the advisory program at Alta, and asked if we could investigate using it at Corner Canyon. Brian explained that it would be a CREW Class: a new class will begin second semester, taught by Whitney Lunt Kellogg, focusing on study skills, daily grade checks, social skills, and school survival skills. It will start with ten, hand- picked students and possibly an aide to assist if more are enrolled. Head Start Fundraiser: We raised approximately $15,000 with a variety of activities in December. The proceeds went to Head Start and some to local families in need.
3. Counselor’s Corner: Amy Hardcastle reported on the registration dates for the 2014-15 school year. January 15 and January 22, 2014, will be CHARGER ROUNDUPS, orientations for all grade levels. The course selection begins February 4-7, after which we will build a master schedule. Arena Scheduling will begin in March. Fun Story: Jennifer Updike shared with us what happened on the day her youngest child was born last year. It was the day Arena Scheduling opened for 9th graders, and she went into labor early that morning. On the way out the door to go to the hospital, she grabbed her laptop. She gave birth and was ready at 3:30 pm to register her 9th grader for classes! Kathryn Myers asked if Honor Cords would be available to qualifying seniors. [It’s in progress) Counselors will be finished with all CCRs (formerly SEOPs) by the end of January.
4. Brian McGill gave an update on the Attendance Policy and discussed tentative code changes for next year. Members suggested that we allow students to go to Charger Time for extra help and count it as Attendance School. Members commented that Attendance Office assistants are sometimes impatient when parents call to excuse their students.
5. Laura Fidler gave an update on the graduation party, which will be sponsored by the PTSA. Brian read survey questions to the group to approve. [In the PTSA meeting the next day, it was determined not to send out the survey as several ideas for the party began to take shape.]
6. PTSA Report: The PTSA awardees were announced: Teacher of the Year: Quinn Linde; ESP of the Year, Debbie Clark; Support Person of the Year, Amy Hardcastle; Spirit of PTA Award, Melissa Hansen; Golden Apple Award, Kathryn Myers, and Administrator of the Year, Mary Bailey. PTA Day on the Hill: February 12 Battle of the Bands: January 23 7. Brian gave an update on the First Robotics contest in which our students are participating. The teacher is Joey Newman. 8. Laura Fidler made a motion to adjourn. Seconded by Kelly Corless. All in favor.
