CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve graduated from elementary school and are now an Ulrich Bulldog! Your “opening” day may be a little Middle nerve-wracking but just remember, everyone is a little nervous, even your School teachers! New experiences can be scary! A positive attitude and knowing what to expect will help you overcome any first day jitters.
O N SCHEDULE ! Seven class periods. Six classes. Different classrooms, hallways and routes to take. It won’t take you long to learn your way around since 6th grade classrooms are all downstairs in one area. But if it seems confusing the first few days of school, help is available. Just ask any adult--the staff is there to assist you! And 4 minutes between classes is plenty enough time to make it to your next class.
I HEAR BELLS RINGING ! Before school, 6th graders gather in the main hallway at 8:50. 1st period starts at 9:00 and school ends at 3:55.
A COURSE IS A COURSE OF COURSE, OF COURSE ! You will take English (2 period block), math, science, social studies, physical education and one elective (either art, band, choir, orchestra or theater arts). Will your classes be much harder than in 5th grade? Your elementary teachers have prepared you to face the challenges of intermediate school course work. And your 6th grade teachers are terrific in supporting you every step of the way. The rest is up to you! Stay organized, focus in class, complete assignments, review for tests and ask for help when you need it!
L OCKS ROCK Every 6th grader rents a hall locker/lock and P.E. locker/lock. Take your combination lock home and practice opening and locking your lock. Memorize your combination but also write it down in a private place.
Most kids go to their locker before and after school and before lunch. As you get used to your schedule, you will figure out the best times for locker stops. Be sure to keep belongings secure by always locking up but leave very valuable items at home!
C HOW-TIME Lunch-time rules! Breakfast and lunch is served in our beautiful cafeteria which features creative cuisine such as nachos grande (extra jalapenos, anyone?), pepperoni pizza, build your own burrito, chicken or steak fingers, slushies and more. So much to choose in 30 minutes of time. Another plus--you can choose your own seats and sit with friends! A PEEK AT P.E. No more recess but 6th graders take P.E. everyday. And yes, that means dressing out in your P.E. shirt and shorts. Undressing for P.E. may seem like a big deal at first, but after a few days, it is so routine you’ll wonder why you even worried about it.
Texas days can be sizzling HOT so you’ll often work up a sweat in P.E. Although you don’t have to take showers, you may want to keep deodorant and wipes in your gym locker. Good hygiene is important! Don’t forget to take your P.E. uniform home for weekly wash and then wear!
Y ’ALL IN THE HALLS Worried about crowded hallways? Passing times between classes can be hectic, but remember, you have plenty of time to arrive at the next class. Walk calmly and purposefully, (no dashing in and out like the Indy 500), watch where you are going and be polite.
O N TOP OF ALL THIS, I STILL HAVE TO LEARN STUFF? Don’t worry—there is still LOTS of room in your brain to learn, even after remembering locker combinations, pin numbers, bus numbers, class schedules, etc.
T AKE THE PLEDGE Learn this and live it! We, the citizens of Ulrich Intermediate, pledge to respect ourselves, others and our school. We will be responsible for our actions. We will take ownership and pride in our education.
G OT SPIRIT? Show your Bulldog pride and spirit for Ulrich. Wear school colors on Spirit Day (Fridays)! Cheer on your teams! Join clubs and organizations. Get involved and help build a positive community. Respect and support one another.
TH A M I SMARTER THAN A 5 GRADER? You betcha because you are now in 6th grade!
