I. PURPOSE: The purpose of the policy is to ensure that each consumer to receive/received a PPD test on admission and annually in a YCS program.

II. INTRODUCTION: The Tuberculosis skin test (PPD) is a test used to determine if someone has developed an immune response to the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB). This response can occur if someone currently has TB, if they were exposed in the past, or if they received BCG vaccine against TB (which is not performed in the U.S.).

V. REPORTING & DOCUMENTATION

1. Pre-admission PPD is required for all clients entering an Staff and/or nurse YCS program. The consumer must have a documented negative PPD test result six (6) months prior to admission to the program.

2. Consumer with a documented , negative PPD test result greater than 6 months prior to admission: Tuberculosis Screening Form

a. Every attempt will be made to have the consumer’s PPD testing performed by the referring provider or physician prior to admission.

b. When PPD testing is not feasible the Pre-admission Tuberculosis Screening Form must be performed by the referring provider or physician.

c. If the consumer screens POSITIVE, the consumer MUST NOT be admitted into the home without YOUTH CONSULTATION SERVICE

Site Specific Policy & Procedure Manual clearance by a chest x-ray.

3. Consumer with a documented positive PPD test result: every attempt will be made to obtain the following information prior to admission:

 Date of positive PPD placement and interpretation

 PPD results

 Chest x-ray results

 Treatment (prophylaxis or full course treatment for active TB)

4. On-going surveillance

a. All consumers will require annual PPD testing as a part of the annual physical examination.

b. Repeat PPD testing will be provided for PPD negative consumers after any suspected exposure to a documented case of active TB. In such a case, a skin test conversion is defined as an increase of >10mm of induration.

c. Skin test converters must receive a chest x-ray to rule out active TB infection.
