He also attended Piedmont 34 Technical College; and 35 36 Whereas, Deputy Joseph Scott Quarles began his law enforcement 37 career with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office on November 13, 38 2000 at the age of nineteen. He performed various duties from 39 clerical to civil process and worked in the Detention Center while 40 waiting for his opportunity to become a certified Laurens County 41 Deputy Sheriff; and 42

1 [5009] 1 1 Whereas, he graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice 2 Academy on January 25, 2002 just a few days after his twenty-first 3 birthday. He was assigned first to Gray Court Owings School as a 4 School Resource Officer and eventually went on to the Uniform 5 Patrol Division in which he yearned to serve; and 6 7 Whereas, although his young life was taken away far too soon after 8 receiving injuries from a tragic automobile accident while in route 9 to assisting his fellow officers of the Laurens County Sheriff’s 10 Department, Deputy Quarles achieved much by fulfilling his 11 lifelong quest of becoming one of the youngest police officers in 12 South Carolina; and 13 14 Whereas, Deputy Quarles was a fun-loving man, role model, and 15 hero who always followed orders and always responded to 16 command by saying “yes, sir”; and 17 18 Whereas, he was a man who loved to give back to his community 19 and volunteered his spare time with the youth of the Sheriff’s 20 Office Explorer Program as well as being a member of the 21 Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and assisting in numerous 22 community functions such as Kid-Prints, Festivals, Career Days, 23 Safety Fairs, and many more events, even playing taps on his 24 bugle at a 9/11 memorial for his community; and 25 26 Whereas, Deputy Quarles had a deep religious faith exhibited in 27 his personal and professional life and also was an active member 28 of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenwood; and 29 30 Whereas, although Deputy Scott is sorely missed at the Laurens 31 County Sheriff’s Office and by the community he served so well, 32 there is also enormous pride and satisfaction in the job he did; and 33 34 Whereas, he is survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. James 35 William Quarles; a sister, Amy Fenell; and a brother, Shelton 36 Quarles, all of Greenwood. Now, therefore, 37 38 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 39 concurring: 40 41 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 42 resolution, honor the memory of fallen law enforcement officer 43 Deputy Joseph Scott Quarles of Laurens County for his sincere
