MINUTES Meeting of the Justice Advisory Council May 13th, 2016 8:30 am-10:00 am 69 W. Washington Street 17th Floor Conference Room Chicago, IL 60602

Board Member in Attendance: Justice Burke, President Toni Preckwinkle, Dia Weil, Victor Henderson and Lisa Stephens.

Justice Advisory Council Staff in Attendance: Rebecca Janowitz, Patrick McPhilimy, Tyresa Jackson, Wynetta Scales and Latoscha Hoover.

Concerned Citizens and Government Guest: Judy King, Becky Brasfield, Nicole Gillespie, Kathleen Morro, Ernest Brown, Sondra Denmark, Sara Wetmore, Ryan Keesling, Ernest Brown and Joy Glover from Cook County Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

I. Call to Order (Justice Burke): Justice Burke ordered the meeting to begin at 8:34a.m.

II. Remarks (Justice Burke) Justice Burke welcomed the Council members and other attendees. Due to an injured ankle Lanetta wasn’t able to attend the meeting. President thanks everyone for all their great work.

III. Review of Minutes: (Approved)

The minutes from March 11th, 2016 Justice Advisory Council meeting were approved with an adjustment that Lisa Stephens was present but was omitted from the attendance.

IV. Executive Director’s Report (Rebecca Janowitz) Rebecca spoke about the collaborative Community Forums that were held in the South Suburbs and that a report is in preparation to go to the attendees. The major concerns of the residents were public safety, economic development and property values.

V. Criminal Justice: Rebecca mentioned that addictions are now being treated as a public health issue rather than a criminal justice issue. This issue is becoming more problematic in Springfield because they are going on to their 11th month without a budget. Many people are facing arrest leading to jail in Cook County because there is less usage of probation.

VI. Juvenile Justice Updates (Latoscha Hoover): A Lunch and Learn date has been confirmed for June 28th, 2016 for all current grantees which will be held at the YMCA. The three panelist selected are Malik Nevels from ILAACP, Kathy Lyons and a representative from the YMCA.

VII. Council Discussions:

a. Justice Burke suggested a creation of a sub JAC Advisory Committee to consider new ideas from other organizations. Ernest Brown will take the lead on the JAC Advisory Committee.

b. Employment opportunities for Emerging Adults in Cook County for young adults ranging from 16-20 years old. The agency will be Center for Companies that Care. The program will work with justice involved youth focusing on career awareness, mentoring and career development.

VIII. New Business:

Lunch and Learn is scheduled for June 28th 10:30am.-1:00pm.

IX. Public Comments: Judy King wants to know how people are informed about the JAC Council meetings and she would like for it to be posted on the website.

X. Adjournment: Justice Burke announced the next meeting will take place on July 8th, 2016 and adjourned the meeting at 9:58am.
