Course aim and material This course is designed in order to strengthen the understanding of the subject-matter on the one hand and to help students improve their pronunciation on the other. The seminars will focus on encouraging students to gain conscious control over speech production both on segmental and suprasegmental levels. The transcription of speech sounds will be studied using IPA symbols. The course will begin by looking at the speech organs and proceed to introduce the production of vowels and consonants. The second part of the course will be devoted to the study of the syllable, stress in simple and complex words and aspects of connected speech. Textbook Peter Roach. 1991. English Phonetics and Phonology. Cambridge University Press. (Library Room 101) Recommended books Kovács János and Siptár Péter. 2006. A-Z Angol kiejtés. Corvina. Cruttendeen, Allan and Gimson, A. Requirements and procedures Each session will be devoted to the discussion of the issues raised in the textbook and to pronunciation practice. Students are required to read the assigned sections of the textbook and study any handouts distributed in class. You may miss up to three classes during the term. Assessment The final grade will be the average of the mid-term test and end-term test. The mid-term test will cover the first half of the course, while the end-term will cover the second half.
