"Lackawanna Valley" depicts the surrounding nature in 1855. But nature does not dominate this painting. In it, a reclining boy watches as a train cuts through nature. He is surrounded by tree stumps, the obvious result of industrial development. The train and, behind it, the roundhouse dominate the landscape.
