"Lackawanna Valley" depicts the surrounding nature in 1855. But nature does not dominate this painting. In it, a reclining boy watches as a train cuts through nature. He is surrounded by tree stumps, the obvious result of industrial development. The train and, behind it, the roundhouse dominate the landscape.

Also visible in the painting are signs of a small but growing community - the steeple of the First Presbyterian Church at Lackawanna and Wyoming avenues, the Wyoming House hotel on the opposite corner - and additional industry in the form of the rolling mills and various shops of the LI&C.
