High Performance Committee Minutes

Outcome Goals:

1. Agree on role of High Performance Team and relationship with High Performance Committee

Approved for Website:

The High Performance (HP) Program Director (James Sneddon) with the support of the Indoor an Beach Technical coordinators (Chris Berglund and Dolphin Kasper) plans, designs, implements and monitors all High Performance Programs for men and women in BC. In cooperation with Volunteers, Zone Representatives, Club Administrators, Regional and Provincial Coaches, the Director is responsible for more athletes achieving excellence and the best possible coaches for all players. The HP Director is responsible for the development of coaches through all levels of play.

Central to the Technical coordinators’ role is administration, coordination and logistics for all High Performance streams. Annually, the director along with the indoor and beach technical coordinators develops and delivers programming, clothing and equipment for over 400 BC athletes, including up to 11 provincial teams.

The VBC High Performance Director works with three governing committees who make decisions regarding programming, policy and competition:

. Women's High Performance Committee . Men's High Performance Committee . Beach High Performance Committee

The HP Program Director works closely with the Technical Coordinators and Regional Coaches (Chris Dahl, Jackie Wong, Adrian Goodmurphy) to integrate Long-Term Athlete Development principles into tactics, skills training and periodized programs for athletes at all ages. The High Performance Team also ensures the best possible coaches are placed with the appropriate athlete ages and developmental levels.

Also central to the HP Director’s role is the consideration of athlete eligibility, selection processes and policies, and elite identification. If you have any questions regarding athlete pathways, tryout and selection protocol, or programs, please contact [email protected]

2. Confirm Volleyball BC’s High Performance Program Identity

What do we stand for?

2.1 Agree on Guiding Principles and key values that HP Program should intentionally implement system-wide. High Performance Guiding Principles

. Character . Development . Performance

Key Values

Honesty, Integrity, Perseverance, Care

2.2 Provide 4 examples/exercises that Team BC athletes should take part

Committee decided to address specific examples at a later time. Decided not to take on the “positive coaching alliance” website as a model, because of confusion over the first and second goal.

3. Confirm Volleyball BC’s HP direction and goals:

Where are we going?

Goal 1a 1) More BC athletes to the National Teams (Youth, Jr. and Sr.) - 25% of National Team. 2) More BC athletes to Post-Secondary Order of preference: . BC . Canada . USA

3) More BC athletes to Professional Teams 4) Retention – create number goal from 16U and 18U Team BC to CIS/CCAA 5) Athlete tracking on why they drop off

Goal 1b 1) Top 3 finishes for all Team BC teams in National events.

Agreed on Program Philosophy for team make-up 14U – Equal teams 16U – Top 7 on A team, next top 7 on Team B, then mix and match according to need. 18U – One team of 14. If possible 2 teams – A and B

2) More kids playing club – create a number goal 3) Add a pre-tryout letter for commitment expectations (Richard Schick to draw up letter for editing by January 6)

Goal 1c Coaching Excellence. . HPD will promote 2 BC coaches to participate in National Team programs per year . Focus on recruiting and training greater number of coaches (8% increase per year) . Targeting Youth coaches for Team BC/Club programs . Target 2 new female coaches per year to participate in Team BC Programs Goal 2 Do we have a target goal for character development? This is very difficult to monitor. HPC can only gauge this through individual accounts or before and after stories from coaches and parents

How do we achieve these goals?

Goal 1a How to achieve the 1a goals . Need to develop programs so that our HP athletes are training the recommended number of hours per year. (We are far below the required) See excel doc. . Can we achieve 10,000 hrs. in Canada by 22 years? Not under current model/culture

. Visualization hours as an option to reach more hours No consensus on implementation of this idea. More research needed.

. Is the field hockey BC model achievable for volleyball? http://www.fieldhockeybc.com/Programs/tabid/64/Default.aspx

Possibly. HPC prefers the idea of running weekly training sessions in December, January, May, June, August, early September. These months fill in the gap between current systems. HPC endorses the idea of running 8 zone teams at the 14U level and 4 regional teams at the 16u level.

HPD proposal for 2010: Boys: 13U (cut off birth date Jan. 1 - June 31*) BC Development Team – 8 zone teams* comprised of 14 athletes (112) who train once weekly from May-June. HP championships Early July (Baden Cup). Beach Development Camp (2 days)

*Reason for splitting the age cut off, to offset ‘Outliers Principle’ *Number of teams per zone may vary. Goal of having 8 zones with one or more teams per zone.

13U (cut off birth date July 1 - Dec 31) BC Development Team – 8 zone teams comprised of 14 athletes (112) who train once weekly from Nov-Dec. HP Championships Early January (Baden Cup). Beach Development Camp -2 days

14U – same 15U – same (except on BC games year)

16U (cut off birth date Jan. 1) BC Regional Team – 4 zone teams comprised of 28 athletes (112) who train once weekly from May-June (must attend this camp to tryout for provincial team). HP championships in early July (Baden Cup). Top 30 athletes are selected from Baden Cup to stay and train for 2 weeks in July. Top 12 selected to travel to Western Elites. Remaining 18 begin Beach training (2-4 days). Compete in a tournament with all 30 athletes. Regional Team training Dec and January

17U (cut off birth date Jan. 1) BC Regional Team – 4 zone teams comprised of 28 athletes (112) who train once weekly from May-June (must attend this camp to tryout for provincial team). HP championships in early July (Baden Cup). Top 24 kids are chosen to train for 2 weeks. Top 12 are chosen to compete in Western elites. Remaining 12 stay and begin Beach Training (2-4 days). Compete in tournament with travel 12 in tournament, for selection to Team BC beach (August).

18U – same but 14 athletes per region (May-June) 19U - same as 18U 20U – must choose to specialize indoor or beach training for August 21U – Same as 20U

Implement a year round strength and conditioning program for Team BC athletes

. Make a decision on if Team BC 14U and 16U coaching cycle is a go for this year…and in principle for the next 5 years. See excel doc.

Pat Hennelly agreed to 14U and 15U Baden Cup for this year. All CIS coaches did not commit to this cycle, but agreed to be involved in the program in some regard. The role of mentor coach was most feasible.

LUNCH

. Is the sport school model achievable for volleyball in BC? See attached plans for Burnaby North Volleyball Academy – clarity/ from Tony Laurita

Agreed that VBC would be a resource to this program, but not currently sanctioning the program. Volleyball Canada not willing to put their name to the program yet, will wait to see how the program evolves this year.

Goal 1b – Top 3 finishes in National Events (Club and Team BC) How? . Increase numbers of clubs – RDC issue . Increase number of quality coaches

. Discussion - Change club format from tournament to Tiered League Format.

. Decided that there are not enough boys clubs to go to a League Format, will continue with same format. Did not want to reduce the number of hours athletes participate

5. Create 2 Strategies to encourage BC athletes to seek post secondary in BC.

Did not address this item

6. Create 2 Strategies to strengthen the relationship between Volleyball BC and post secondary institutions (promotion of athletes and matches to spectators, raise profile of leagues in larger community, support Provincial championships, involvement in planning sessions. Did not address this item

Goal 1c – Coaching Excellence

Agreed to implement and advertise a pay scale for coaches. Agreed on less dependence on NCCP training, but rather creating a mentoring program that will entice new coaches to get involved. Agreed to provide free NCCP training or clinic to teachers Need to create and publish selection criteria for Team BC on the website Need to create a program manual for each Team BC program – including practice plans, key drills, key skills and systems to build on, with similar language Need to implement a coach’s log to be passed on from year to year.
