ADVANCED PLACEMENT BIOLOGY 2013 SUMMER ASSIGNMENT MS. VOGEL

** PLEASE PICK UP & SIGN OUT YOUR AP BIO BOOK IN ROOM 311 STARTING ON MONDAY, JUNE 3 rd **

Welcome to AP Biology! This is an honors course for students capable of completing college level work; I am excited that you decided to take on this challenge and I look forward to having you in class! Enrollment in this course is a commitment to perform at the highest level and to display a positive attitude. To maximize your skills and to perform proficiently at this advanced level, considerable time will be spent on assignments, labs, and projects both in class and at home; I expect a true commitment on your part to devote the time necessary for your success.

In order to complete all the required topics and to insure you do well on the AP Exam next May, you must complete this summer assignment. This year, you will be using the college textbook: Biology by Neil Campbell, Ninth Edition. Please cover your book and take good care of it! (At the end of the year, you must return the text with the CD in the back – so keep track of it.)

During the third week of school you will have a major unit exam that covers the following Campbell book chapters, so be sure to do a thorough job! I will grade the assignment and return it to you to use as your study guide.

Pace yourself! This is a lengthy assignment! 1) Read the following 5 chapters and check that you can answer the Self-Quizzes at the end of the chapters. You may take your own notes from the text, but this is not a requirement Chapter 1: Themes in the Study of Life Chapter 2: The Chemical Context of Life Chapter 3: Water and Life Chapter 4: Carbon & the Molecular Diversity of Life Chapter 5: The Structure & Function of Large Biological Molecules

2) Guided reading packets for each of the chapters listed above are posted on my website on School Wires. Print out each study guide and provide a brief (but thorough) response for each question. Your responses should be neatly hand written. Complete sentences are not necessary! In fact, many answers require one word; others may require a sentence or two. This will help you focus on the important concepts of each chapter. Please do your own work. I will spot check each study guide; together they will be worth 75 points. All of this information was covered in your Bio I course, so this is a review! 3) Topics will be discussed briefly in class; I will provide PowerPoint presentations and distribute review questions before your assessment, but these study guides will be your main source of review.

The assignment is due the day we return to school on SEPTEMBER 4, 2013, (no exceptions). Late work will NOT be accepted. (If you are unprepared for the first day, you may want to rethink taking this level course.)

There still will be time to enjoy your summer – I promise! HAVE A GREAT SUMMER. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN THE FALL! 
