St. Michael S Greek Catholic Cemetery. (Byzantine/Orthodox)

St. Michael’s Greek Catholic Cemetery. (Byzantine/Orthodox) Shenandoah Heights, West Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill, PA The Historic First Byzantine Ukrainian Parish in America. Est. 1884.

Note from the recorder, Andy Ulicny: This is my second attempt at enumerating a cemetery. This one has the challenge of older stones and the Cyrillic Alphabet.

I wish to note for the researcher some of my idiosyncrasies in order to assist the user of this file. I worked using a laptop computer and a nice lawn chair, enjoying the cooler hours of the morning and evenings of June 2008.

I did not create an index, I have no computer program to do so. I recommend the user employ the “find” function under the “edit” tab to more quickly locate names. Be very aware of the variety of spellings, in family plots, I have seen 3 variations of the same name through the generations. I have made every attempt to record name’s spelling as listed on the tombstone.

I’m generally attempting to enumerate in a flowing pattern in each area. Sometimes row by row, but I often will jump to the next row if I am in easy position to see a tombstone, or if the adjacent plot seems related to the one I’m currently recording. I’ve attempted to keep family groupings from relatively adjacent plots together.

I have tried to keep all stones in one plot together, not skipping lines. If names are on one stone, I usually tried to indent those on the stone. If other stones are in the same plot, I retyped the surname but did not skip a space.

I have made an attempt to group names from each stone, or plot from the eldest generation toward the most recent if it is apparent. At times, with double names on stones, I do not even know which name matches the surnames. Researchers will want to sort this out in the census records.

llll Anything in italics is my personal addition, not something from the stone. I am somewhat familiar with some of these families from my research and although I do not wish for this to be an annotated record, if I can list some obvious factual relationships, I have. On rare occasion, I may have done some genealogical research to attempt to clarify the people on these stones.

My greatest challenges, and admittedly the greatest weakness in this enumeration involve my lack of expertise in the Cyrillic Script often employed. I used web sites to provide myself with a Cyrillic Alphabet and a phonetic equivalent, but these actually varied from region to region in Eastern Europe. Also, the script itself had Upper case and lower case as well as a standard and italic version. Finally, there appeared to be some unique letterings that seemed to be tombstone engraving versions. I quickly became acquainted with opening phrases like “Here rests” and the words for birth, death, and age. I also got a feel for common names in this alphabet such as Andrew, Michael, Anna, Maria, and John. However, many names and surnames still proved incomprehensible to me. In such cases, I may have attempted the name but listed a “?” aside of it to show my uncertainty. On other occasions I merely listed the name as “beyond my ability to translate”. Finally, many of the oldest stones were well worn and illegible as well as in Cyrillic. I note these as present, and let you the reader attempt to tackle the names.

Note the frequent use of “?” also with dates and names engraved in English. If the stone was worn, or oddly scripted and I was unsure of information… I used a “?” aside of my best guess.

While I am probably guilty of some typo’s and a few missed stones, I know that accuracy in recording is imperative. Many of these Byzantine names are a bit off the Standard English ones we use today. I was particularly attentive with the more unique names.

For facility in typing I have used numbers for months and the more recent/computer-friendly style of recording dates using periods. In my listings, the month is always listed first in the standard American manner of recording. llll I have on occasion included some added prayers, or sentiments recorded on the stone, but this is not complete. For speed in recording, I have chosen to be rather abbreviated with recording military service. Listing a full account has proven to be tediously time consuming, but if a military footstone provided more exact detail in regards to dates of birth and death, I have recorded that.

The roadways here in St. Michael’s form a Roman Cross and divide this cemetery into 3 segments: Left, Right, and above the T. I will be recording the cemetery in that order.

Recording of tombstones begins at the bottom of the hill, on the entrance adjacent to Annunciation Cemetery. I will begin with the large hill to the left of the road going up the cemetery hill. I will note when I return to front right side. I expect to then finish with the uppermost part of the cemetery above the upper road.

I anticipate doing the hill in two swathes, first, those closest to the Raven Road highway and wall, then returning to the bottom of the hill and resuming with those nearest the central cemetery road.
