STUART OF PELION 14 AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY 15 AND MANY FRIENDS. 16 17 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply 18 saddened to learn of the death of retired Colonel Clarence Stuart of 19 Pelion, the husband of state Representative Elsie Rast Stuart, who 20 died April 10, 1999, at the Lexington County Medical Center; and 21 22 Whereas, Colonel Stuart was born February 23, 1915, on a farm 23 near Midland, Michigan. He graduated from Michigan State 24 University in 1939. After teaching vocational agriculture at 25 Almeda, Michigan, he was commissioned as a first lieutenant in 26 the United States Army in 1941. He served on the staff of General 27 George Patton, sailing to North Africa in 1942, and participating in 28 the allied amphibious landings in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and 29 France; and 30 31 Whereas, following World War II, Colonel Stuart continued a 32 distinguished career spanning thirty years of service in the United 33 States Army, including tours of duty at the Pentagon, Fort Sam 34 Houston, Fort Hood, and Fort Sill. Following the outbreak of the 35 Korean War, he rendered distinguished service in combat as 36 commander of the 555th Field Artillery Battalion, known as “Triple 37 Nickel”, then supporting the Fifth Regimental Combat Team. 38 Taking command of the badly battered battalion in August 1950, 39 Colonel Stuart led his men in some of the fiercest fighting of the 40 war. When the Fifth Regimental Combat Team was surrounded, 41 Colonel Stuart’s battalion was overrun by the enemy. He barely 42 escaped capture but was successful in discovering an alternate

1 [3962] 1 1 route of escape and in leading his unit out of an ambush. For his 2 heroic conduct, Colonel Stuart was awarded the Silver Star for 3 bravery; and 4 5 Whereas, in addition to the Silver Star, Colonel Stuart’s other 6 commendations include the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit (Second 7 Oak Leaf Cluster), Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service 8 Medal, National Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory 9 Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service 10 Commendation Medal; and 11 12 Whereas, following the Korean War, he served at the Pentagon, 13 graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College, and served at 14 SHAPE Headquarters in Fountainebleau, France. In 1958, he 15 attended the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. After 16 tours of duty at the Pentagon, Fort Hood, and Hawaii, he 17 completed his Army career at Fortress Monroe in Hampton, 18 Virginia; and 19 20 Whereas, following his thirty-year military career, Colonel Stuart 21 received a master’s in landscape architecture at the University of 22 Massachusetts and spent his last twenty-five years in Columbia 23 and Pelion. After his military retirement, he taught Sunday school, 24 was a member of Pelion Ruritan Club, Pelion Community Club, 25 Lexington County Water and Sewer Commission, Pelion Planning 26 Commission, and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a member 27 of the Military Order of World Wars and a life member of both the 28 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars; and 29 30 Whereas, Colonel Stuart’s first wife and mother of his five 31 children, Elizabeth Freeland Stuart, died in 1975. In 1977, he 32 married Elsie Sutherland Rast Stuart. Surviving, in addition to his 33 wife, are his children, Judith Hohman and her husband, David, of 34 Alexandria, Virginia; C. Paul Stuart of San Antonio, Texas; David 35 M. Stuart; Kathleen Whitaker of Columbia, South Carolina; 36 Wayne C. Stuart of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; a sister Alice 37 Dinsmoore of Midland, Michigan; stepsons James Carlisle Rast; 38 William Fort Rast; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 39 one step-grandson; and 40 41 Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this 42 resolution, hereby express their deepest sympathy to his widow,

1 [3962] 2 1 his children, family and friends upon the death of this truly fine 2 soldier, patriot, citizen, and gentleman. Now, therefore, 3 4 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 5 concurring: 6 7 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly hereby 8 express their deepest sympathy to the family of Colonel Clarence 9 E. Stuart of Pelion, who died on April 10, 1999. 10 11 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 12 his widow, Mrs. Elsie Sutherland Rast Stuart, of Pelion. 13 ----XX----
