St. Michael S Greek Catholic Cemetery. (Byzantine/Orthodox)

St. Michael’s Greek Catholic Cemetery. (Byzantine/Orthodox) Shenandoah Heights, West Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill, PA The Historic First Byzantine Ukrainian Parish in America. Est. 1884.

Note from the recorder, Andy Ulicny: This is my second attempt at enumerating a cemetery. This one has the challenge of older stones and the Cyrillic Alphabet.

I wish to note for the researcher some of my idiosyncrasies in order to assist the user of this file. I worked using a laptop computer and a nice lawn chair, enjoying the cooler hours of the morning and evenings of June 2008.

I did not create an index, I have no computer program to do so. I recommend the user employ the “find” function under the “edit” tab to more quickly locate names. Be very aware of the variety of spellings, in family plots, I have seen 3 variations of the same name through the generations. I have made every attempt to record name’s spelling as listed on the tombstone.

I’m generally attempting to enumerate in a flowing pattern in each area. Sometimes row by row, but I often will jump to the next row if I am in easy position to see a tombstone, or if the adjacent plot seems related to the one I’m currently recording. I’ve attempted to keep family groupings from relatively adjacent plots together.

I have tried to keep all stones in one plot together, not skipping lines. If names are on one stone, I usually tried to indent those on the stone. If other stones are in the same plot, I retyped the surname but did not skip a space.

I have made an attempt to group names from each stone, or plot from the eldest generation toward the most recent if it is apparent. At times, with double names on stones, I do not even know which name matches the surnames. Researchers will want to sort this out in the census records.

llll Anything in italics is my personal addition, not something from the stone. I am somewhat familiar with some of these families from my research and although I do not wish for this to be an annotated record, if I can list some obvious factual relationships, I have. On rare occasion, I may have done some genealogical research to attempt to clarify the people on these stones.

My greatest challenges, and admittedly the greatest weakness in this enumeration involve my lack of expertise in the Cyrillic Script often employed. I used web sites to provide myself with a Cyrillic Alphabet and a phonetic equivalent, but these actually varied from region to region in Eastern Europe. Also, the script itself had Upper case and lower case as well as a standard and italic version. Finally, there appeared to be some unique letterings that seemed to be tombstone engraving versions. I quickly became acquainted with opening phrases like “Here rests” and the words for birth, death, and age. I also got a feel for common names in this alphabet such as Andrew, Michael, Anna, Maria, and John. However, many names and surnames still proved incomprehensible to me. In such cases, I may have attempted the name but listed a “?” aside of it to show my uncertainty. On other occasions I merely listed the name as “beyond my ability to translate”. Finally, many of the oldest stones were well worn and illegible as well as in Cyrillic. I note these as present, and let you the reader attempt to tackle the names.

Note the frequent use of “?” also with dates and names engraved in English. If the stone was worn, or oddly scripted and I was unsure of information… I used a “?” aside of my best guess.

While I am probably guilty of some typo’s and a few missed stones, I know that accuracy in recording is imperative. Many of these Byzantine names are a bit off the Standard English ones we use today. I was particularly attentive with the more unique names.

For facility in typing I have used numbers for months and the more recent/computer-friendly style of recording dates using periods. In my listings, the month is always listed first in the standard American manner of recording. llll I have on occasion included some added prayers, or sentiments recorded on the stone, but this is not complete. For speed in recording, I have chosen to be rather abbreviated with recording military service. Listing a full account has proven to be tediously time consuming, but if a military footstone provided more exact detail in regards to dates of birth and death, I have recorded that.

The roadways here in St. Michael’s form a Roman Cross and divide this cemetery into 3 segments: Left, Right, and above the T. I will be recording the cemetery in that order.

Recording of tombstones begins at the bottom of the hill, on the entrance adjacent to Annunciation Cemetery. I will begin with the large hill to the left of the road going up the cemetery hill. I will note when I return to front right side. I expect to then finish with the uppermost part of the cemetery above the upper road.

Birth date Death date

Shubiak, Steve/ Father 1890 1964 Mary/ Mother 1892 1933

Libbey, George J. xx 2/13/1931

Wotowitch, Ambrose 1876 1927 Bertha 1867 1952 Wotovitch, John 8.7.1903 4.10.1943 Pauline 2.28.1902 1.21.1994

Lesko, John 1893 1980 Mary 1899 1994 Thomas 1935 xx Petra 1929 1969 Back of stone: Lesko, John, Jr. 1929 1933 Serocca, William 1925 1933 llll

Serocca, Alexander 1895 1962 Mary 1899 1965

Lesko, John/Father 1859 1921 Anna/Mother 1856 1922 Helen 1904 1993

Parangosky, Peter 1897 1953 Susan 1899 1982 Peter 1937 1999 John 1919 2004

Bisko, Anthony 1891 1984 Anna 1891 1942 Thomas 1923 1927

Liscusky, Stephen J. 1890 1947 Julia 1894 1980

Hysock, Michael J./Father 5.24.1914 9.25. 1970 WWII

Kislock, George/Father 1890 1936 Anna /Mother 1897 1960

Stanchak/Simochko stone Simeon 1905 1981 Mary 1907 1996 John 1884 1952 Anna 1888 1952 “Geller” is engraved between Mary and Simeon

Andras, Mary 1869 1949 Casimir 1895 1925 Michael 1902 1994 John 1904 1948

Howard, William/Father 3.18.1891 6.14 1957 WWI llll Johanna/Mother 1900 1954 Joseph/son 1933 1933

Smith, Antonia/ Mother 1893 1925

Skala, Nicholas/Father 1893 1937 Eva/Mother 1898 1982 Skala, Joseph 1915 1980 Beaver, Helen E./ Granny 1917 1994

Doshna, Pachomi/Father 1882 1965 Esther/Mother 1886 1963 Ethel/daughter 1924 1937 Wassil/son 1909 1978 WWII Joseph/ son 12.28.1928 12.19.1979 Korea John/son 1918 1980 Uhas, Andrew/ Father xx 1955 Anna/Mother xx 1925 Uhas, John/Uncle xx 1936

Platoff, Alexander/Father 1881 1935 Kathryn/Mother 1889 1924 John/son 1916 1932

Horan, Michael/Father 1875 1924 Mary/Mother 1885 1957 John/son 1912 1983 WWII William J. 1923 1991 WWII William Jr. 8.13.1953 12.3.2003 Army

Glados, Nicholas old stone nd nd

Andren Madnih In Cyrillic

Clark, Rufus J. 1901 1967 Mary 1905 1951 Steck, Zackary/ Father 1874 1925 Christine/ Mother 1891 1961 llll Steve/son 1912 1948 Puschak, Steven 1880 1955 Puschak, Julia 1930 1999

Canavan, Julia 1915 1991 Mayzsa, Jon 1922 1984 WWII

Prybolsky, Dimitri/Father 1865 1946 Susan/Mother 1867 1945 Mary/daughter 1912 1936 Joseph 1921 1921

Prybolky, Michael/husband 1904 1972 Mary/wife 1905 1958

Minos, Joseph/Father 1905 1939

Mayza-Kopach stone Anthony 1885 1922 Pelagia 1892 1977 Yoachim 1877 1928

Petrock, Stephen 1891 1927 Anna 1892 1976

Snitzer, Joseph 1880 1961 Helen 1889 1976

Kowalishen, John 1881 1957 Martha 1892 1954 Kowalishen, Joseph 1936 1977 Korea

Komanitsky, Simon/Father 1882 1953 Pauline/Mother 1886 1953 Julia no dates Helen no dates John no dates Adam no dates llll Kapuschinsky, Michael 10.11.1925 3/5/2001 WWII Phillips, Pauline/Mother 1915 1969

Komanitsky, Anna/Mother nee Bogdanski 5.5.1911 12.11.1998

Hawran – Demi stone (Cyrillic) Hawran, Alec 1854 1927 Anna 1864 1933 Demi, ?first name 1890 1920 Howard, Ottillie 1894 1978

Kralik, John (Cyrillic) ?.22.1872 10.17.1928

Karlik, Julia/Mother xx 1973 Baby George xx 1925

Nelson, Anna nee Kralik 11.26.1915 9.15.2004 Kochansky, Thomas 1874 1957 Anna 1889 1923

Nayduch stone (Cyrillic) Nayduch, John? 12?. 15.1920 Ethpozina 1877 1966 Cudo, Benedict J. and Anna 1998 ?

Kummakl?
