STAFF MESSAGE

Thus far, 2014 has been a wonderful year of growth. Starting from zero…meaning no programs scheduled or advertised… since January we have incorporated a small, yet successful children’s program into our repertoire at Bob Jones Nature Center. This includes our outdoor preschool for ages 3-6, a ‘Mom and Me’ style class for 18 mo-3 years, and a Homeschool class for ages 6-8. We are poised to offer these programs again in fall, in addition to a homeschool class for 8-10 year olds with some changes in registration and scheduling. All homeschool classes and the outdoor preschool will only be offered for the whole term (Aug-Dec) instead of individually. Our Babes in the Woods class will be offered as part of a monthly tuition. We will still have individual classes available, but not for these particular programs. I would like to implement Weekend Club Wild for school age children who wish to participate in classes here but are not available during the week. These will be offered individually or for the whole term (discounted).

In addition to these classes, we have been hosting Simple Saturday Projects every weekend, free for members or a small fee for non-members. We have also continued to provide classes such as Photography and Wild Edible Plants. I do believe there are opportunities we are missing in terms of how some of these classes are structured and marketed that we need to take advantage of and I am speaking with instructors about options to help make this possible.

Summer Camp is steadily filling. We have already exceeded the profits from last year’s camp and this includes payouts, consumables, and purchases that will need to be made in order to host camp. At the time of this writing, we are at 27% capacity. Along with summer camp, we are also offering field trips on Mondays and Saturdays, which we have already started booking. Lastly, we will continue to offer birthday parties. We have been averaging about three per month since January.

Dear Members and Friends,

The year of 2013 for the Bob Jones Nature Center (“BJNC”) reminded me of the scene in the movie “Parenthood” in which life is compared to a rollercoaster. 2013 was a roller coaster ride for the Bob Jones Nature Center. I am happy to report that when the “ride” was completed, we all had smiles on our faces! 2013 was another year of transition, change and growth for BJNC!

During January 2013, the Board of Directors offered the position of Executive Director to Teresa Moss. Ms. Moss accepted the position and began employment in February, 2013. Unfortunately she left us in October 2013 in order to study for a PHD in Environmental Philosophy. We wish her well.

Also during October, 2013, the Board hired Ms. Holly Gee to assume the position of Education Program Coordinator for the Nature Center. Holly is a licensed teacher. Holly’s skill, enthusiasm and great ability has transformed our educational programming and birthday parties. We are so lucky to have found such a talented individual. Please take time to meet Holly the next time that you are at the Nature Center.

We could not have made it through the challenges of 2013 without our dedicated volunteers. As the Board voted to make the changes that would ensure the future of BJNC, we had a number of volunteers who shone like the shining stars they are. BJNC is excited and proud to be recognizing Mr. Rusty Pafford as our Individual Volunteer of the Year. Rusty has a positive attitude and is always ready to lend a hand, regardless of the need. We are also awarding the Group Volunteer of the Year Award to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints – Southlake Ward. Almost 100 members of this church came out to help BJNC clean up the grounds and set up the decorations for Naturally Sweet 5. They also volunteered during the Event. We are also recognizing Elaine Parry and Jan LaPine for their special dedication to BJNC.

I want to especially thank the members of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors, Jane Musser (Vice President), Simon Rurka (Secretary), and Bruce Rosenstiel (Treasurer) for the hours they have donated in helping to oversee the management and growth of BJNC Board of Directors. Thanks also to the other individuals who in 2013 donated their time and talents to serve on the BJNC Board of Directors: Julie Landesberg, Wanda Schafer, Norm Lyons, Al Zito, Buddy Luce, Randy McCauley, Audra Lewandowski, Steve Oligmueller, Monica Hutchins, Southlake Mayor Pro Tem, Brandon Bledsoe, and Carroll ISD Superintendent, Dr. David Faltys.

Naturally Sweet 5 (“NS5”) was held again under the November stars. Thanks so much to the committee who worked hard to make it a success: Jane Musser, Jessica Heintz, and Audra Lewandowski. Board member and former vice president of marketing for the Texas Rangers, Norm Lyons, again secured a First Pitch package from the Rangers for our silent auction which was definitely the “hit” of the evening.
