Thursday, September 27, 2012 - Presented at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) – Toronto Branch Meeting

The first meeting of the CASI Toronto Branch 2012 Fall Season was kicked- off with a presentation from the University of Toronto Aeronautics Team (UTAT) to hear about their recent achievements and see their actual aircraft.

UTAT consists of over 50 graduate and undergraduate students with a shared passion for the aerospace industry and engineering design. This past year the Team successfully competed in the SAE Aero Design West competition as well as the CASI Free Flight competition.

Several UTAT members were on hand to present their aircraft designs, tools for analysis, community involvement, future endeavours, and overall competition standings. It was an interesting and interactive presentation.

The Toronto Branch of CASI was very fortunate to have Remi Gravel from Siemens PLM Software as our Guest Speaker on October 18, 2012. The event took place at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS).

Mr. Gravel is a Solutions Consultant for Siemens PLM in the Aerospace & Defense sector with 15 years of experience.

In the aerospace sector, Siemens PLM Software technology is used by 80 percent of the top 10 fixed-wing aircraft original equipment manufacturers (OEM's) and 90 percent of the top 20 aerospace engine OEM’s. Siemens PLM software is used to improve productivity, reduce launch cycle time and lower the total ownership cost of aerospace products and services.

Mr. Gravel provided an excellent overview of the software covering the various life cycle stages from initial concept, product development and in service support. Remi also provided an overview of aerospace and non- aerospace capabilities.

Wednesday November 14, 2012 – Presented at Ryerson University – Ryerson CASI Branch Meeting

The Ryerson CASI Branch held a semi-formal Wine & Cheese meeting on November 14, 2012 at Ryerson University.

The Ryerson Branch Executive put on a very impressive and well executed meeting. The meeting was kicked-off with a talk from Ryerson Aerospace Professor Dr. Jason Lassaline and Aerospace Chair Professor Dr. Paul Walsh. Both Dr. Lassaline and Dr. Walsh discussed the benefits of CASI participation and membership. They also provided an excellent overview of upcoming CASI activities that would be of great interest to students such as the Canadian Student Summit on Aerospace 2013, AERO13 and IAC2014. This generated considerable requests for participation in these upcoming events.

Chris Hayball, Toronto Branch Past Chair, and Alex Tsoulis, Toronto Branch Councillor, were on hand to discuss the merits of CASI membership, aerospace trends and insight into career activity. Alex Tsoulis also provided a PowerPoint (see separate presentation) presentation regarding career insight and the advantages of CASI Membership.

Hats off to Harshita Patel, Mobina Movahedi, Jennifer Yeung and the Ryerson Branch Executive for a dynamite evening.

It should be noted that the Ryerson Branch Executive is busy arranging the upcoming CSSA 2013 that will be held at Ryerson University on January 25 through 26, 2012. An impressive list of Guest Speakers and Plant Tours is being finalized. Thursday November 22, 2012 - Presented at UTIAS – Toronto Branch Meeting
