INTRODUCION: ¡Bienvenidos! My name is Coach Campos. I will be your Spanish 1 instructor for the 2015-2016 academic school year. I am looking forward to providing you with the necessary and sufficient information to make your Spanish language acquisition and experience as successful as possible. Please note that I will have HIGH expectations for EVERY student throughout the course of the year, therefore we must work in compliance to attain the basic and introductory goals for this class.

COURSE OVERVIEW: All four elements of language learning will be utilized: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with emphasis on using the target language. Spanish, as well as English, is used for instruction and in-classroom activities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The foreign language learning process is based on communication. Throughout this year, the student will learn how to do all of the following and more in Spanish: - Use the Spanish alphabet, numbers, colors, and the Spanish calendar - Explain feelings and emotions - Describe someone’s personality and physical appearance - Talk about the school day, classes, schedule, materials, and opinions - Introduce his/her family and tell about them - Share his/her likes and dislikes regarding present and pastimes and activities - Describe the weather and related clothing Lessons will focus not only on language skills for speaking, listening, reading, and writing, but also on the vast cultural similarities and differences among Spanish-speakers of the world. We will be immersed daily into a variety of activities ranging from: listen to media and labs, looking at art work, reading and speaking skills, creative compositions, as well as skits and presentations. QUARTER GRADING POLICY: All assignments will be given a point value. Additionally, all assignments will be assigned to one of two categories that are included in a weighted average calculation that determines the report card grade.

SEMESTER EXMAN AND FINAL GRADES: Each semester there will be a final exam that covers all material from that semester. *The final exam is 15% of the semester grade*. Exemptions for the Final Semester Exam will be possible. The categories and weights are as followed:

25% Formative Assessment: - Daily work/Oral participation/Homework Checks 25% Summative Assessment: - Quizzes/ Calentamientos 50% Summative Assessment: - Tests/ Projects (major grades)

If for some reason the student is tardy a 3rd time, they are expected to proceed to the front office to receive a referral from administration. (Refer to the student handbook regarding tardy policies for Sunnyvale Middle School for clarification.) HOMEWORK: No homework!!?? If the student does not finish with a daily assignment in class, it is to be taken home and completed by the end of the week. All assignments will be due on the last day of that school week (usually Fridays.) EXPECT A “HOMEWORK CHECK” EACH WEEK! MISSING WORK WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF ZERO FOR THE GIVEN ASSIGNMENTS! Late assignments will not be accepted after the due date. **Hmk. Checks = 50% homework assignments & 50% 10 question assessment on Fridays (or the last day of the school week)** **ANY failed formative assignment CAN be redone for a maximum grade of a 70. Must be turned in during tutoring** **ANY failed summative assignment CAN be redone for a maximum grade of a 70. Must be done during tutoring times** Students should expect to spend at least 15 minutes a day (about 1 hr./ week) practicing their Spanish vocabulary at home.

MAKE-UP WORK: Each student shall be responsible for obtaining and completing their own make-up assignments, homework, quizzes, and tests after absences. Students shall receive a zero for any assignment or test not made up within the allotted time. Students shall be permitted to take tests administered in any class missed because of absence. The student must check with the teacher regarding make-up work on the day he/she returns to class. All work must be made up by the end of the week after the student returns to class.

TUTORING SCHEDULE: Tutoring will be available Tuesdays thru Thursdays before school, or by appointment. Please, inform me when you plan on attending. If a student is currently struggling, it is their responsibility to take advantage of tutoring. Please notify me if you must cancel.

PROJECTS: Expect at least one home project assigned during each nine weeks period. Students will be responsible for providing their own and original materials, (some items will be available in the classroom) and some class time will be provided for their completion. Due dates, guidelines and rubrics for the projects will be given at least THREE class days in advance.

CALENTAMIENTOS: This is an important activity that students are to begin working on as soon as they enter the class. All students should be in their desks working on the calentamiento when the tardy bell rings. These assignments will be checked periodically, usually after the completion of the 10th one. These calentamientos will be saved in the student’s spiral notebook and turned-in upon request (maximum of 3x a quarter) by the teacher for a Summative (QUIZ) grade. HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL LEARNER - Come prepared to class with materials you need and completed homework - Take notes and keep your materials organized - Speak and write Spanish as often as you can (We will all make mistakes!) - I am here to help you, so do not be afraid to ask questions - Participate with enthusiasm and have fun! - You can be a success if you apply yourself on a daily basis!! *I believe that it is extremely important to keep the lines of communication open between us. So, if you have any questions, concerns, or if you would just like to discuss your progress, please do not hesitate to contact me.
