1. Objective & Purpose

1.1 YELLOW BARRIER

The POLYFENCE MESH is used in industry and the agriculture industries to provide cost effective barriers and prevent access to areas. The product is manufactured from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) which has been treated with a UV Retardant to reduce wear and tear from exposure to weather conditions. (A life span of 5 - 10 years is expected with exposure to sun.) HDPE is a durable and long lasting material which is biodegradable and 100% recyclable.

The Yellow colour as chosen for the fact that Yellow is most visible in danger situations. (E.g. mist, smoke and night.) It is for this reason that Forestry has selected Yellow to paint all emergency vehicles with. The Yellow Barrier also comes with Reflectors to enhance visibility.

The Barrier is a sturdy and stable product that has been treated to withstand most conditions and remains flexible but is not expected to slacken as the HDPE is treated with a UV retardant. Tests indicate that a 1m strip of Yellow Barrier can withstand 350 kg weight and the product is water resistant. Yellow Barrier is a light weight but sturdy material that eases handling and installation. The product is supplied as 1500 mm height in a coil form. This consists of 30 mm apertures and is 4 mm thick.

1.2 QUADRAPLAST (DIAMOND MESH)

Quadraplast is mostly used for agricultural, landscaping, crowd controlling and access control. The product is environmental friendly, UV protected, corrosion and fungus free and can be used underground. Quadraplast is a strong and rigid diamond mesh which need no maintenance and easy to handle.

Quadraplast is suitable for sheep, goats and cattle.

2. Droppers and Intermediates

This product replaces existing fence materials and is suitable for agricultural and electric fence.

3. Scope

The purpose of this document is to identify the Hazards and Risk associated with the use of POLYFENCE, Quadraplast AND Yellow Barrier.

The extent of this study is limited to the intended use of this product specifically in relation to use as a barrier to prevent access to Underground Back areas, surface access to high walls in open cast environment and construction sites. This product should not been seen as access control, but only indicates controlled access. (Access is still possible with physical force.)

4. Description of Study Method and Unit Process

A study of the Material Safety Data Sheets and possible risk exposures from intended normal use of the POLYFENCE and the Yellow Barrier was undertaken and is captured in Annexure A.

A Hazard is a source or situation with a potential for harm in terms of human injury or ill health.

A Risk is a combination of the likelihood and consequence of a specified hazardous event.

An Environmental Aspect is any element of an organisation that can interact with the environment.

An Environmental Impact is any change resulting from environmental aspects.

The criterion applied is reflected in Annexure A: Risk Assessment.

The Material Safety Data Sheets for HDPE are included in Annexure B:

5. Executive Summary

From a review of the risk assessment and other technical information, the conclusion is that the product in normal use should give no rise to any adverse Health, Safety and Environmental Risks. The product in question is stable and is fully recyclable. Ease of

use due to weight and sturdiness of product and durability are added features that make the product a logical choice for the application intended by the Agricultural, Mining and Construction industries.
