Dear Parent/Guardian:

Based on your child’s English test scores and level of academic achievement, your child is eligible for the English Language Learner Program. This program will help your child improve his or her speaking, reading, writing and listening skills in English. Students usually participate in the program for three to four years, but you may request that your child exit the program at any time.

Your child’s English proficiency was measured using the Tennessee Department of Education’s English Language Development Assessment (ELDA). Your child’s composite level of English proficiency was: ______.

Students in kindergarten through 5th grade have a special 30 minute English class every day with other English Language Learners in his or her school. Students in grades 6 through 12 have an ELL class for one period (45 to 90 minutes) every day.

There is no charge for the English Language Learner Program and all materials and textbooks are provided free of charge. Your child’s ELL teacher will send home information about the ELL class and ways you can help your child do well in school.

If you have questions or concerns, you may contact Dr. Nina Morel, Sumner County Schools ELL Coordinator, at 451-7013 or email [email protected].

We look forward to working with you and your child in the ELL program! Thank you for your help and support. Please sign and return this letter to the ELL teacher. Please keep the ELDA scores at home for your records.
