Week 22 June 2 nd For Release Date July 7th The Durutti Column – Chronicle LX : XL Kookydisc 2CD Deluxe Box Set £20.00 KOOKYDISC60 07/07 5055300381606 25% discount offered to all independent record stores ONLY (this excludes all wholesale and export accounts). This will be a very limited special and expanded version to acknowledge the artists sixtieth year of his life; thus Chronicle XL. The Original Commission - The partly autobiographical album was first commissioned for a performance in April 2011 at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. During this period, Vini and Poppy (his girlfriend of 9 years) parted company and it was a heartbroken Vini that went on to complete the production. Despite the breakup, Poppy had agreed to perform on piano that evening for two of the songs that she had written with Vini accompanying on guitar. Over the following three years, the artist has battled serious illness and has not played a full show since. It was – and still is – a very difficult time physically, mentally and emotionally for Vini Reilly. The compositions reflect a particular stage in Vini’s recent life. At the Bridgewater Hall show, a pre-release limited edition CD was available exclusively for that show, with a note by Vini explaining the background to the new work. Whilst Chronicle began as an autobiographical project, events in his life during recording the album brought a new twist to the project. Chronicle 1 and LX: Chronicle 2 – The Music. Bruce Mitchell (Drums and Percussion) "So there are two versions of Chronicle. We did a special edition for the gig at the Bridgewater Hall, where people could get the album as part of a premium ticket deal. In 2011, we premiered the music there, with all Vini's photographs up on the screen. That was the last gig really. The following day, Phil Cleaver from Kooky said he'd got back home to find his emails full of requests from the audience to buy one. So they all sold out, immediately. But soon afterwards Vin became really ill." "It was a big, expensive recording, Chronicle. And Vin, despite being ill, did this further version, taking all aspects of musical life. So there's Chronicle 1 and Chronicle 2. What I wanted Vini to do as a composer was something similar to Elgar’s Enigma Variations. A piece of music about certain people in a life. I wanted him to do this and link the music to photographs he'd taken over the years. Vin's a great photographer." However, Reilly remains the Durutti Column's indisputable leader, and had the last say. Bruce continues: "I didn't quite get what I wanted, because in the end, Vini wanted the album to be about his life at this point in time. We couldn't finish it for a while because Vin was in such a bad way. But now it's there. And we've got some very interesting, very powerful music on this. Vini doesn’t think show business. To him, it’s all about a musical imperative." Chronicle LX - The Package This package continues the Durutti Column’s tradition of the innovative. This special packaging contains personal images from the artist's camera and photographic collection. Continuing the autobiographical theme, the packaging will acknowledge previous releases through parts of its design and materials used herein. Time Attendant – Bloodhounds Exotic Pylon LP £7.99 EP37 07/07 5055300375056 Haunted soil... Abstract electronic transmissions from A Field in England…Set within a landscape of sugar beet factories, deep murky fishing ponds and nettle strewn country lanes, Bloodhounds is a sonic exploration of a childhood spent in the English countryside. Time Attendant is Paul Snowdon, a painter and musician recovering from a rural Northern upbringing by eking out a liminal existence across South East London bunkers. Following on from the highly acclaimed Treacherous Orb EP (More Than Human) and from startling contributions on The Outer Church compilation (Front & Follow), Moon Wiring Club’s specially curated Down By The Silver Sea (Gecophonic), and an astonishing set in late 2013 (accompanying the silent film L'inferno (Helios Film version, 1911)) at the BFI in London, Exotic Pylon is slobberingly psyched to present Time Attendant’s debut album Bloodhounds which drops on vinyl and digital on July 7th 2014. Continuing and expanding upon the strange strain of medieval acid (©Kek-w (Hacker Farm)) first explored on 2012’s debut 12” Tournaments Snowdon has pushed his highly original and peculiar vision into the strangest of corners collaging stuttering sine beats, lost in fog voices, surreal fanfares and sci-fi dub reverb around a minimal but endlessly flexible array of analogue boxes with just a modicum of digital post-production. This is genuinely Radiophonic – an unconscious misuse of equipment to paint inexpressible sound worlds, Snowdon being as influenced by contemporary electronica as he is by the secret history of electronics reared in academic laboratories from the early 20th century and onwards. Like unearthing lost Brutalist architecture at a village fete, Time Attendant brings out the paradoxical pains and pleasures from an environment where the concepts of industrial and rural are rendered meaningless. Like the beautifully unique paintings that Snowdon creates Bloodhounds is the pinnacle of his sonic vision thus far – an earthbound sci-fi expose of the mud and stone beneath our feet. 1.Ermine Fever 2.Nettle Sting Riddle 3.Inky’s Pitch 4.Crystal Mascot 5.Sugar Beet Perfume 6.Stalking Lines 7.Flashy Pointer 8.Fuchsia Circles.

Comet Gain - Paperback Ghosts Fortuna POP! LP £7.99 FPOP169LP 07/07 5060044172212 CD £6.75 FPOP169CD 07/07 5060044172205 (July Cargo Collective Title) Heavyweight Vinyl LP + MP3COMET GAIN return with their seventh album “Paperback Ghosts” on July 7th, their first since 2011’s critically acclaimed “Howl of The Lonely Crowd”. Recorded at Soup Studios with producer Simon Trought at the helm, and inspired by the psycho-geography of walks in North London woods and in the forgotten grey hinterland of the city’s back streets, “Paperback Ghosts” comes soaked in autumn melancholy. Tender-hearted but not miserable, defiant but not angry, it maintains the delicate balance that has always been Comet Gain’s strength. The album is about ghosts: the half-forgotten spectres of lost loves; the people who live inside their own sepia-tinted memories; the mystical phantom presence of previous owners retained by used books, the paperbacks haunted by old fingerprints. Blending psychedelia, folk-rock, garage muscle and 4am sadness, the songs draw on the esoteric that lies behind the ordinary. All contain a hope or sweetness. “Sad Love and other Short Stories” is about being haunted by memories of a lost, unrequited love, while in “An Orchid Stuck in Her Throat” a living ghost reflects on a life of missed chances. Stranger still is “Confessions of a Daydream”, wherein a mystic mod magician wanders Limehouse conjuring up the ghosts of Margaret Thatcher and flame haired 50s witch goddess Marjorie Cameron to wage a perpetual psychic war in the phantom back streets of broken London, before the defiantly undead John McKeown (The Yummy Fur / The 1990s) pops up at the end to intone some words of wisdom. Comet Gain are David Charlie Feck (vocals, guitar), Ben Phillipson (guitar), Rachel Evans (vocals), ex-Morrissey/The Meteors drummer Woodie Taylor (percussion), Anne Laure Guillain (keyboards) and new recruit, Clientele bassist James Hornsey – a motley group of like-minded romantics, taking pride in an abject failure to care about the normal band model. Inspired at times by early Creation Records, Television Personalities and mod culture, drawing from the same ideals as Dexys, The Style Council and Vic Godard and from the lineage of The Velvet Underground, The Byrds and the 13th Floor Elevators, their mystic anarchist principles blend French New Wave with English kitchen-sink heart. For years they have drifted through scenes picking up people and emotional ties - from Riot Grrrl to acid punks, C86 to lo-fi - yet somehow outliving their peers and in turn inspiring a younger generation of DIY musicians like The Cribs, Love Is All, Veronica Falls, and Crystal Stilts. On each album they record, Comet Gain bring together their myriad of influences, creating a cohesive aesthetic between sound, artwork, liner notes and ideas. "Paperback Ghosts" is no different, offering us a glimpse into a haunted half-world with its strings, yearning harmonies, 12-string acoustic guitars and half-focused vision of pianos in reverb, while remaining at heart a pop record, a richly textured affirmation of Comet Gain’s twenty-year anti-career. And it’s hardly surprising – the first EP was a document of the band’s first three songs. Time has afforded the chance to hone the creative process with an almost military precision: cut the excess; find the point; hammer it home. If that approach recalls the crack-the-whip intensity of early Greg Ginn-led Black Flag rehearsals (legend states that Ginn would have the band practice 8 hours a day, 6 days a week), then it’s fitting of the conditions in which the music was conceived. AUTOBAHN’s practice room also plays host to Leeds’ DIY hardcore/punk venue, and elements of that lifestyle have filtered into these new songs, in spirit if not aesthetic. Indeed, AUTOBAHN should not be mistaken for a hardcore band and its associated dogma. There’s too great a range of influences at play – current listening includes Chron Gen, Tubeway Army and Rowland S. Howard. This breadth of influence has informed the band from conception, but it’s never been as manifest as on 2. You can hear it on the krautrock-inspired EP closer, ‘Ulcer’, with its metronomic intensity and subtle-but-persistent synth line, and in the myriad of guitar lines that close ‘Pale Skin’. A nod must also be made here to producer Matt Peel, who the band credits for pushing their songwriting in new directions. Full Uk Press Campaign Via In House & Enganche. Gavin Treliving (vocals/bass) and Tom Waddingham (vocals/drums) have spend the past year-ish recording, mixing and mastering the album Promises Promises whenever time and money allowed. The album will be released through Field Records on 18th November. Promises Promises reflects where the band is at live – veering wildly but somehow comfortably between dark, crushing riffs and crafted songs...all where the hook is king. The songs are all written collaboratively from individual sparks of ideas but retain a personal insight into the headspace of the band. The band will then embark on a string of dates to support the album release, including a 7 date tour as main support to Jamie Lenman (ex Reuben). The band was handpicked for the tour by Jamie after he saw them at a show in London a couple of years ago and became a fan. Above all, Kill Chaos are music fans. They talk endlessly about who they’d like to tour with, what producers/studios they’d like to work in, who their favourite bands are...they play music as music fans would, with commitment, passion and energy. With all of the other stuff that surrounds their – and our – daily lives, this means the world to them. The Red Masque - Mythalogue Beta-lactam Ring Records CD £7.99 MT257 07/07 753907161724 With the first studio outing in five years from Philly's native avant prog wunderkind, The Red Masque let loose a clarion call of avant prog gravitas to all comers here. Scions to a subterranean continuum of stormy entanglements, the tendrils that entwine on these tenebrous tunes snake out from some very auspicious pods. On Mythalogue, they take a page from Red-era King Crimson and another from those that rode the more riff-centric faultlines of the 90's avant prog revival (Present, Happy Family, Thinking Plague, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) and fire the shredded results out of confetti cannons. Riffs crunch out fevered labyrinths, time signatures create airborne origami and vocalist Lynnette Shelley's supple, full-throated attack seals it with a kiss. This crew have been hoisted on the shoulders of some of Rock In Oppostion's most formidable figures, from their previous studio affair gaining release on Chris Cutler's ReR USA imprint to Mythalogue being mixed by 5uu's/Science Group member and avant prog magi Bob Drake. Little wonder, as the interzone of turbulent energies and high wire conniptions on hand here make plain The Red Masque's heir apparent status to this trajectory.

Various - Spiky Dread : Issue 1 Rongorongo DLP £7.49 ROROLP1 07/07 5060323890004 CD £5.49 ROROCD1 07/07 5060323890011 Repress of the album from 2012. The first release from Rongorongo shines a light on the grey area between punk and reggae. ‘Spiky Dread’ is the result of a few years of hunting by Wrongtom and Ed Zed, who sifted through a plethora of punk and post-punk oddities, picking their favourite approximations of dub and reggae - a side of punk which is largely overlooked, save for tales of the mighty Don Letts playing roots records at The Roxy, or dub sessions round at John Lydon’s gaff in the wake of the Sex Pistols. ‘Spiky Dread’ tells a deeper story, focusing on the lesser known practitioners of punky reggae, with the odd iconic act snuck in for good measure. Opening the set, “America’s greatest unknown band” The Offs sat snugly amongst the mutant disco and noise bands of early ‘80s downtown NYC with an infectious brew of punked up funk and ska … their ‘Cool Down’ is a rare moment of downbeat brilliance. The following 13 tracks take in the skanking R&B of The Offs compatriots Bad Brains (who also grace the album’s cover thanks to Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Lucian Perkins), dubbed-out Liverpudlian dancehall from Jah Scouse (and two-thirds of Young Marble Giants), a heavyweight bubbler from South London art collective Family Fodder, and the unlikely combination of prog, punk and reggae from Birmingham’s Dangerous Girls, responsible for some of the best-worst rhyming couplets ever committed to tape. Acclaimed writer and punk professor Vivien Goldman appears here twice, penning liner notes as well as dueting on the lovers rock cover of Bob Marley’s ‘Do it Twice’ by her short lived group Chantage, with faders manned by dub experimentalist Adrian Sherwood. Heading north, there’s a rare opportunity to catch A Certain Ratio in dub mode in their Sir Horatio guise, whilst back down to Brighton we hear Peter & The Test Tube Babies tormenting their bassist with the Clash-esque (well musically at least) ‘Trapper Aint Got A Bird’. Also included is Return Of The Panthers’ apocalyptic dub rocker ‘Calling Captain Nemo’, which has sat unreleased for 30 years since these Cardiacs associates split up soon after the recording session. Another Home Counties group Red Beat offer up a sneering skanker produced by Killing Joke’s sonic mastermind Mark Lusardi, who also boasts credits on PiL’s ‘First Issue’ and LKJ’s ‘Bass Culture’. A brace of Brit-dub legends make an appearance, first on Ruts DC’s rhythm collision with Mad Professor and then Dennis Bovell crops up with The Slits, who’s ‘Animal Space’ 12” is as unsettling as it is slinky. Finally, the session wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the mecca of UK bass music, and Bristol serves up two of it’s finest uneasy skankers via the dislocated dub of Glaxo Babies versioning their own post-punk staple ‘Who Killed Bruce Lee’, and the frenetic steppa ‘Work’ by Electric Guitars closes off thecomp with a jerky response to Two Tone’s ska revisioning. Peter Richard – Walking In The Neon Dark Entries 12” £6.99 DE064LP 07/07 730669337352 Dark Entries Editions is excited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Italo Disco club hit “Walking In The Neon”. Peter Richard was the alias first adopted in 1979 by producer and vocalist Walter Beinat. His best known song was “Walking In The Neon”, released as a maxi-single on Italian label Good Vibes in 1985. For this single Richard teamed up with the production duo of Gigi Farina and Franco Rago, best known for their projects ‘Lectric Workers, Decadance, Expansives, and Wanexa. "Walking In The Neon" was written by Rago & Farina with help from Chuck Rolando, member of Italian disco group Passengers. The track's arrangement was done by Italian disco pioneer Celso Valli who wrote club classics for Macho, Azoto, Passengers and Tantra, to name a few. On the A-side is the “Club Version”, an uptempo classic that sounds like a dream encounter between mid-80s New Order and hi-NRG legends Patrick Cowley and Bobby Orlando. Clocking in at nearly 9 minutes, it is purely dance-floor oriented on an epic scale, with evolving hooks and melodies. The B-side features a shorter dub version with extended breaks and bass lines. Both songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Pressed on neon orange vinyl, as it was when originally released in 1985. TRACK LIST: 1. Walking in the Neon (Club Version) 2. Walking in the Neon (Dub Version)

Art Fine – Dark Silence Dark Entries 12” £6.99 DE065LP 07/07 730669337369 Art Fine was the duo of Fabrice Bellini (electronics, vocals) and Rush Blakemann (guitar, synthesizer) from Tuin, Italy. They met in art school and became friends, inspired by New Wave, dance and electronic music. They recorded their only single “Dark Silence” in November of 1984, which was released by Discomagic in 1985. Fabrice programmed the electronic drums using SCI Drumtraks and added extra tracks on the Simmons SDSV. Rush played electric guitar and the Yamaha piano notes at the start of the song. Guest musicians Silvano Borgatta and Riccardo RosaThe “da da da da da" voice effect was done by engineer Gigi Guerrieri, who cut and spliced a tape rather than using a sampler, which was too expensive at the time. “Dark Silence” tells the love story of beautiful girl who Fabrice saw many times but could not reach. He called her Dark Silence, for her dark hair and eyes and the silence unwanted between them. The B-side features a remixed version with extended breaks and dubbed out bass lines and vocals. Both songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket featuring a photo of the duo and that Art Fine logo in puzzle pieces. Each copy includes a double sided postcard insert with lyrics and liner notes by Fabrice Bellini. TRACK LIST: 1. Dark Silence (Art Fine Version) 2. Dark Silence (Long Version)

Helen – Witch / Zanzibar Dark Entries 12” £7.99 DE066LP 07/07 730669337376 Dark Entries Editions reissue series continues with a double A-side of the first two Helen maxi singles, “Witch” and “Zanzibar”, as a 4- song EP. Helen was an Italo disco studio project that consisted of various producers, songwriters, and vocalists from Italy in the 1980s. The first line-up included popular Italo producers Piero Cairo and Massimo Noe, known for their work with Joe Yellow, Den Harrow, Pink Project, and Dharma to name a few. They were joined by prolific Italo session vocalist Elena Ferretti. “Witch” was originally released in 1983 on Out Records, a label distributed by Discomagic Records. Signature Linndrum and Simmons drums create the driving rhythm track while Elena’s powerful vocals tell the haunted tale of a witch and her magic. In 1985 the second incarnation of Helen recorded the song “Zanzibar”. The vocal version was written by Ennio Ronchelli (Keyboards) and Roberto Barocelli (Guitar, Bass), with singer Daniela Paratici. This line-up was heavily influenced by the ‘Afro’ movement made popular by DJ Beppe Loda. “Afro” refers to the Cosmic musical trend of slower disco records featuring African drums and rhythms. The “Afro Mix” of “Zanzibar” was produced by DJ Daniele Losi and Roberto Lodola, with additional live hand drums and sticks by Nigerian percussionist George Aghedo. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The vinyl is housed in the original jacket from the "Witch" maxi single, featuring artwork by Elena Feretti. Each EP includes a fold out poster with the nude female model. TRACK LIST: 1. Witch (Vocal Version) 2. Witch (Instrumental Version) 3. Zanzibar 4. Zanzibar (Afro Mix)

Facta – 36th Chamber / Zodiak Soundman Chronicles 12” £4.49 SMNCHR004 07/07 5055300382528 Bristol-based Facta has transitioned from an intriguing new talent to one of the most exciting producers around in an instant, cementing his rep with two standout releases on Badimup and Idle Hands. It comes as no surprise – ever since a few earlier bits aired on Keysound’s Rinse FM show, Facta seemed certain to make some serious waves with his fluid, multifaceted productions on the murkier side of soundsystem music. Soundman Chronicles’ DJ Parris has been supporting Facta dubs throughout and it was only so long before some of his tracks cropped up on the label. SMNCHR004 features two Facta beats that showcase his knack of reconfiguring the weight and pressure of early dubstep into something undeniably fresh. 36thChamber builds around a deep-set bassline with hollow, chiming melodies and ricocheting percussive incisions that deliver brisk swing and movement – a proper roller. Zodiak comes taut, tough and minimal; a matrix of bass hits, quaint samples, glitches and razor-sharp drums that progress through layers of varying

Already getting airplay from Rob da bank (Radio 1), Gideon coe, Marry Anne hobs (radio 6) and John Kennedy (Xfm). This 7’ will is a start of things to come….. This 12’ will definitely start of a busy year to a great start. Checking One - Future proofed Tech- Jungle beat droplets fight their way through a corridor of synths. Vocal stabs drift from locked rooms each containing their own distinctive drum pattern. Half way through the track salvation is reached, doors open and all the components meet with a realisation that dark may lead to light, part Soul, part nervous, part shrouded horror entity. In 1996 Drum and Bass label Liss Fuzion put out its final release Your Move by owner and producer Pager B-TZ. Taking inspiration from this little heard classic hardware have re-worked and re- chopped. With Your Move they soften all the edges of the jittery beats and use drum and bass sounds that float in and out. Your move feels re-assuring, filtered and like a memory of that track, that stayed in the back of your head for weeks but you could never recall where you heard it. In 2014 the label will release an app including exclusive material from forthcoming music from ‘hardware’. New On Denovali Ensemble Economique - Melt Into Nothing Denovali LP £10.99 DEN200LP 07/07 4024572718947 CD £8.40 DEN200CD 07/07 4024572718930 For Fans of: HTRK, Tim Hecker, Tamaryn. Stream: www.denovali.com/ensembleeconomique “Melt Into Nothing” is Ensemble Economique’s most lucid seance to date. The prolific Humboldt County musician has stripped layers off of his trademark haze but retained the beautiful desolation that’s earned him a rabid fanbase. The solo project of former Starving Weirdos member Brian Pyle, Ensemble Economique has crossed a land bridge from apocryphal world music and dusty soundtracks to gauzy 4AD-style atmospherics. Trellises of guitar embolden Pyle’s whispered, threadbare lyrics. On “Hey Baby”, the itinerant tone feels like an update on Neil Young’s stark and beautiful soundtrack for Jarmusch’s “Dead Man”. “Melt Into Nothing”, like that beautiful film music, evokes the great American expanse. Field recordings slip in and out of the mix. On “Fade for Miles”, Pyle’s adroit effects and backwards tape manipulation make the long trail on his vocals fade into waves on a rocky beach. Pyle combines minor-key organ and spacious string synths on “Never Gonna Die”, recalling the grey grace of the releases on Factory’s gothic cousin, Benelux. Thunder accentuates the dubbed-out machine drum programming as Pyle’s dulcet tenor floats in storm clouds. The full-length also features contributions from Toronto artist DenMother and Parisian artist Sophia Hamadi, also of dark-wave Opale. This music is not excessively dark or severe. Rather, the record explores the internal dialogue of solitary walks. “Melt Into Nothing” is for making sense of humanity in nature’s unforgiving face. Ensemble Economique has made his most accessible record yet, but the complex emotion behind these tracks remains resonant and ultimately mysterious. CD: digipak. CD £8.40 DEN202CD 07/07 4024572718954 Classic/ Piano. Stream: www.denovali.com/theeyeoftime "THE EYE OF TIME is the Solo-Project of French musician Marc Euvrie. Euvrie's musical development is deeply connected with the French DIY punk and hardcore scene, though he has been classically trained as well. He started to play piano being 9 years old, composed his first pieces with 15 and studied cello at the conservatoire after finishing school. Euvrie used to play in several bands before, being influenced by CLAUDE DEBUSSY, PHILIP GLASS, ERIC CHOPIN, J.S. BACH, MICHAEL NYMAN just as by GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR, A SILVER MT. ZION or PORTISHEAD, he began to translate his personal reflection of our complex world into music, which initiated THE EYE OF TIME. A self titled debut record, released in Spring 2012, evolved first. For his debut Marc Euvrie's critical writing exposed a dark look on the present, past and future: Linked to machines and samples, revealing an unnatural direction of the human being's existence. His upcoming release ACOUSTIC is a consequent change of focus. Looking for the motor, the personal needs to survive, he found himself experimenting with only Cello and Piano. Apparently these classical instruments turned out to be a relevant strong signal to go back to the roots with something more natural and simple to start from. Though both records seem to go in opposite directions in terms of sound and concept, a strong underlying layer stays inevitable: The Eye of Time's compositions imply a call to fight for the things we love. ACOUSTIC might be understood as a counterbalance to The Eye of Time's debut. Where the previous record disclosed the coldness of our time, destructing everything that is meant to be our deep nature and presenting the despair of our situation, Acoustic embarks on a little glimpse of hope: Finding some strength to keep fighting for the nature of things and their vital qualities. Marc Euvrie composed six songs for six different locations and points in time, reaching way back to ancient centuries as well as taking a glance into our near future of a yet unknown place. A very personal travel through time and space, between the beauty of nature (Cisjordania, Norway) and the beauty of hope, which allows humans to dream their dreams (Spain, Poland). Marc Euvries own feelings and thoughts about his life evoke mostly in the last two tracks, where he found a form to intensify what keeps him alive. Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf – Circa 1990-1993 Stones Throw 4LP Box £28.99 STH2331 07/07 6594572333112 Curated by Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw is releasing a 4LP boxset to commemorate the late MC, Charizma and the collection of works he and Peanut Butter Wolf created between 1990-1993. The anthology includes rare, classic and unreleased tracks that makes up eight sides of vinyl, along with never before seen photos and ephemera. A lifetime has passed since the murder of Bay Area emcee Charles “Charizma” Hicks who, in December of 1993 at the age of 20, was shot and killed at random while sitting in his car. Despite his short life, Charizma made an impression on everyone he encountered. Charizma’s death deeply impacted his close friend and hip hop production partner Chris “Peanut Butter Wolf” Manak, who at the time stopped making music (and everything else) for several months after receiving the news. Ultimately, however, it was Charizma’s murder that gave PB Wolf the impetus to carry on and get their music heard by the world – setting up his own record label to do so. In 1996, Wolf founded Stones Throw Records and put out the first release, a Charizma/PB Wolf 12” single called “My World Premiere.” Fast forward to 2014 and over 400 releases later, including the 2003 Charizma album Big Shots, Peanut Butter Wolf now presents a comprehensive tribute to his friend and musical partner, properly showcasing the full body of work left behind by Charizma over 20 years ago. With this posthumous release of an artist who was only 20- years-old when his life was cut short, hip hop fans can only speculate as to what heights might have been reached if Charizma was still here today. Open Mike Eagle – Dark Comedy Mello Music Group CD £7.99 MMG052CD 07/07 659123038324 If you’re just tuning into Open Mike Eagle’s stellar career, the LA Weekly anointed him last year as the hottest thing in indie rap. Pitchfork called him a “whiz with matching easy-going hooks to intimate personal reflection.” But Dark Comedy could be the best thing he’s ever done—a record that captures the perennial struggle between art and commerce, the last half-century of widening class rift, and the need to be funny or die. This is intended to dump whiskey on the unsuspecting heads of those with false ideas of authenticity or what rap should be. TRACK LIST: 1. Dark Comedy Morning Show (feat. Toy Light) 2. Qualifiers 3. Pharaohe Monche – P.T.S.D – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder WAR Media 2LP £11.99 WM0001LP 07/07 659123038010 With his highly-anticipated fourth solo-LP, P.T.S.D. - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Pharoahe Monch re-emerges with a new concept project which finds the ground breaking emcee tackling PTSD; a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma. Throughout the duration of the LP, Monch narrates as an independent artist weary from the war against the industry machine and through the stuggle of the black male experience in America. When Eminem recently named-dropped him (“But I still rap like I’m on my Pharaohe Monch grind) on his “Rap God” single it was for good reason, as Pharoahe Monch has been at the forefront of lyrical innovation for two decades now. Not only is he one of Hip-Hop’s preeminent lyricist, crafting intricate rhyme schemes and intelligent raps, but he is also an incisive policital and social commentator, using Hip-Hop as a platform for political engagement as his “Bullet” trilogy hauntingly speaks to audiences in the same dark personification of a bullet. El Da Sensei – Try Again Redefinition 10” £10.49 RDF048 07/07 638293356254 One of hip-hop’s most consistent MCs, and notably one of a select few who has successfully constructing a solid discography since making his debut in ‘94 as one half of The Artifacts, El Da Sensei is more than familiar with the idea of what it means to Try Again. Opting for quality over quantity, the EP features a trio of songs alongside instrumental versions of each track. One of the reasons for El’s longevity is that he never compromises his vision of what hip-hop is supposed to sound like and this EP is a true testament to his ethics. Lyrically El covers a lot of ground from introspective / mature verses over a mesmerizing piano-driven track provided by Joc Max (DJ Spinna), through braggadocio / motivational raps on”Last Round,” a collab with the outspoken Detroit DJ/Producer/OG HouseShoes, however, the standout just might be the D-Smooth produced, Redman-approved, “Smoke To Me,” El’s highly descriptive ode to his favorite plant. If this brief but potent 10” leaves you wanting more, rest assured El is gonna keep delivering, just as he has been doing for nearly 20 years. Stay tuned for upcoming projects by El Da Sensei on Redefinition Records, including the return of the The Artifacts as well as collaborations with K-Def, Def Dee, Damu The Fudgemunk, Klaus Layer and more. Singles Sonic’s Rendezvous Band - City Slang / Electrophonic Tonic Easy Action 7” Blue Vinyl £3.99 EA45003 07/07 5060174955785 Sonic's Rendezvous Band came from the ashes of four Michigan rock bands: Fred "Sonic" Smith, formerly of the MC5, Scott Morgan, formerly of the Rationals, a soul-influenced Detroit band of the 1960s, Gary Rasmussen, formerly of The Up & Scott Asheton, formerly of The Stooges. They remained virtually unknown, but their one and only single retained high interest among fans of Detroit rock. The band had had only enough money to mix one song, "City Slang", so it was pressed on both sides of the single. One side was labeled mono and one side stereo although both sides were identical. Only 500 copies, 2014 Re Master for the only record issued by Sonic’s Rendezvous Band in their entire career, Primal scream covered this song last year
