Position The BLM White River Field Office is seeking one GIS Technician to collect, edit, manage, and organize Description: comprehensive travel route inventory data from GPS units and GPS cameras and enter the data into GIS maps and attribute tables in the program ArcGIS 10.1. Several times each week 4-6 individuals (Trail Crew) will provide the data collected from the field on travel routes to the GIS Technician via GPS units and GPS cameras. The position will be responsible for removing the data from the GPS units and cameras once per week as well as editing, organizing, and storing this data. Other GIS-related tasks include entering this data in GIS maps, attribute tables, and other files. This work includes maintaining and editing geodatabase feature classes, shape files, normalization of tables, and editing tables and features to create a complete GIS product. It is likely that this position will also work 10-20 hours in the field each week with the Trail Crew collecting data and operating OHVs. This position will be supervised by the BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner and supported by a BLM Park Ranger and BLM GIS Specialist. The travel route data will be used in the future to make informed decisions with public input on these routes in a travel management plan.
Training will be provided in GIS use and project specifics, First Aid/CPR, GPS use, safety procedures, radios, public land management, and the overall travel management process. This position will also be provided training and certification in OHV use, 4x4 truck operations, and trailer towing. A preference will be given to those highly qualified individuals with GIS skills, the ability to conduct trail crew work, and the ability to work the entire season. Start dates range from May 17th -May 24th with ending dates ranging from September 19th –September 26th. The total internship is expected to be approximately 18 weeks or 720 paid hours, but may be negotiated to be reduced or extended a few weeks depending on the intern’s availability, funding, and workload.
Housing is not provided for this internship, but local assistance can be provided to help find options, reduce costs, etc. Rental rates in Meeker, CO currently vary from $400-$600 for a two bedroom apartment. The opportunity to gain professional work experience and contribute to an important land management process awaits those selected for this challenging opportunity. Minimum Attention to detail and safety oriented. Qualifications: Team player with positive attitude. Intermediate GIS skills with some knowledge of ArcGIS 10.1. Knowledge of GPS units, ArcPad, and GPS Correct is preferred. Valid State driver’s license. Must be able to provide own housing. . Physical Ability to work in an office environment. Requirements: Willingness to work outside throughout the field season in sometimes demanding conditions. Ability to, or experience in, operating a dirt bike, ATV, UTV, and 4x4 trucks. Ability to work 40 hours per week. Work schedule can be negotiated but is currently planned to work 10 hours per day Monday-Thursday. Position Duration Early or late May to mid to late September.
