PreAP Globalization Webquest Globalization vs. Local Diversity… Opportunity or Conflict? Complete the webquest below using your own sheet of notebook paper during class today. If you don’t finish in class, complete the assignment at home. Remember that the “quality of your work” is IMPORTANT!! DO NOT COPY PASTE… we have seen these websites (we found them!). No credit will be given for copy/pasted answers… you learn nothing that way. Read the information and then answer the question using your own words and YOUR OWN BRAIN!!!! Step One… What is globalization? Click on the link. http://www.sociology.emory.edu/globalization/issues.html Click on each question on the page. Read the brief summary and then write out the answer to the question in your own words. You may also answer the question by creating a mind map of the information, an outline, or Cornell notes. There is also a link to a glossary on the top menu. Look up any vocabulary you don’t know!

Step Two: The Globalization of Sesame Street. Click on the link below and explore the website. http://www.sesameworkshop.org/aroundtheworld The website shows all of the countries where Sesame Street is shown. Choose three countries (on different continents…not all in Europe for example) and read about the different programs. 1. How do the producers of Sesame Street adapt to the cultures of the world, while “going global”? Give specific examples. You must include at least one specific example from each of the three countries. Step Three: The Globalization of Coke Click on the link and explore the website http://www.thecoca-colacompany.com/ourcompany/index.html 1. Coke by the numbers. • In how many countries are Coke beverages sold? • How many employees does the company have worldwide? • How many different beverages does Coke have worldwide? • How many servings of Coke are there per day? Now, click on the “Coca-Cola System” on the navigation bar. 2. What is the “Coca-Cola System” in terms of globalization? 3. Click on “Brands” at the top and choose three products that are unfamiliar to you (click “all brands” at the top). Investigate the three you chose and write down some information about each. 4. How does Coke appreciate local diversity in its products? (In other words, how do they respect the cultures of the various countries?) Give examples from the three products you investigated. 5. Do you think that Coca-Cola is a “responsible global corporation”? Explain your point of view and support it with a few specific facts or examples from the products you investigated. Step Four: Vanishing Cultures In a globalized world, one of the negative effects is that cultures “vanish.”.
