Resolution for Unblocking the FOXNEWS Channel from the Campus Wide Television Network

Thelomathesian Society, St. Lawrence University

April 21, 2008

Drafted by St. Lawrence Republicans

Considering St. Lawrence University offers a comprehensive television package composed of over seventy television channels through Time Warner Cable, and

Considering three of those seventy channels are 24 hour national news networks, including CNN, CNN-HN, and MSNBC, and

Considering FOXNEWS is offered through the Time Warner Cable television package on channel 56, and

Considering channel 56 is blocked on the campus network and is designated as a St. Lawrence University campus network channel, and

Considering channels 48, 69 and 79 are non-assigned channels on the St. Lawrence University television network, and

Whereas the current network channel on 56 should be relocated to one of the three non- assigned channels available on the St. Lawrence University television network, and

Whereas the FOXNEWS channel offers an alternative news source for St. Lawrence University students;

We, the Thelomathesian Society, hereby resolve that the FOXNEWS channel be unblocked from the campus television network and be made available as an alternative news source for St. Lawrence University students. It is clear that students turn to 24 hour news networks to gather information on national and global issues for their own personal knowledge as well as classroom assignments and that as many sources as possible should be made available to the student body. We are not supporting a movement to remove a St. Lawrence University television network channel, but rather relocate it to one of the three non-assigned channels on the television network so that FOXNEWS will be made available. Through this resolution, we the student body take a unified stance on the importance of the first amendment and the freedom of speech by allowing additional opinions and views to be heard on global and national issues.
