SIP: SHARING INFORMATION ON PROGRESS REPORT
2012
Roosevelt University PRME SIP Report 2012 A Word from the Dean
Dear Director,
This letter is to inform you of the deep and continuing commitment to the Principles of Responsible Management Education on the part of the Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration. With this letter is a report on our progress against each of the principles indicating our depth of activity for each.
The Walter E Heller College of Business Administration has a long-standing history of applying these principles even before the term “sustainability” was coined and long before this idea became popular.
We believe that this confirms our commitment.
This report has helped us identify gaps or needs for improvement on each principle and we are taking action to fill those needs immediately. As we think our students benefit from this perspective, we are taking action to improve those benefits.
We are proud of our accomplishments to date and enthusiastically anticipate new actions for the future. The UN-PRME is a guide for us in this activity. I’m sure that you will agree that we have accomplished much and are poised to do a great deal more. Sincerely,
Terri Friel Dean, Heller College of Business
2 The Heller College of Business
The Heller College of Business (HCB) is one of six colleges located within Roosevelt University. Roosevelt University is a private, non-profit, metropolitan university with campuses located in downtown Chicago, Illinois and in Schaumburg, Illinois. It has a rich history of commitment to social justice and to values that provide access to higher education for a diverse student body. HCB’s Mission
Mission. Roosevelt University's Walter E. Heller College of Business provides a diverse population of students the best opportunity to develop critical skills necessary for success. This education emphasizes professional integrity, sustainable business practices, and global engagement.
WEHCBA students learn, experience, and gain an edge in the workplace through instruction in leadership, critical thinking, business marketing, finance, operations, management and information technology. They benefit from practical experience and real-world access achieved through internships available at leading Chicago-area businesses and through the dynamic instruction and guidance from our seasoned faculty and staff. The College offers business education with today's economy in mind. Programs focus on practical application and success in today's global corporate environment that integrates an emphasis on personal and professional integrity, as well as the importance of social responsibility.
WEHCBA’s mission is linked to the mission of Roosevelt University through its vision, policies, and procedures. Roosevelt University has a rich history that is inspired by principles of social justice. It strives to educate socially conscious citizens who are tomorrow leaders both within their professions and communities (see Exhibit A). The university recruits, retains, and graduates a diverse student body that is committed to social justice. The commitment to social justice has defined Roosevelt University since its formation in 1945. The University was born out of a courageous act by the faculty members and then university President Edward Sparling over a social injustice. Shortly after World War II, the board of directors of a currently-existing university asked the president to develop admission quotas for women, racial, and religious minorities. This was not to be developed as an affirmative action plan; rather it was intended to consciously restrict these groups’ access to the university. The president refused and left the institution, accompanied by more than half of the faculty members and staff, and a very large part of the student body. Together, they chartered the Thomas

Principle 1
Purpose: We will develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy.
Overview The Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration recognizes that developing the capabilities of students to create sustainable value for business and society requires multi-faceted approaches. The College is working towards this goal through both curricular and co-curricular initiatives. At the university-level, a number of initiatives also reflect a commitment to creating a more sustainable world.
Curricula Undergraduate Curriculum
The Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration now offers a BSBA degree with a major in social entrepreneurship along with marketing, management, finance, human resources and accounting. This new major includes activities that teach students about the world and societies greatest needs. The ACARA challenge is included in one of the courses offered in this curriculum. There are new courses to help students investigate Social Entrepreneurship as well as the undergraduate major and graduate concentration.

Students have traditionally received substantial instruction on ethical issues, with courses throughout the business curriculum incorporating ethics modules into their courses. In addition,
5 all undergraduate students are required to choose one of two courses – 1) Business and Society or 2) Ethical Leadership & Corporate Social Responsibility as part of the core business requirement. An elective course in Business Ethics is also available to students through the Philosophy Department.
For the first-year student, two courses are available that support understanding of sustainable development –1) Business Sustainability/Green Economy and 2) Discovering Entrepreneurship. Curriculum for all majors includes “Topics” courses that can be used appropriately for introducing new content and for development of courses that support PRME.
Graduate Curriculum
The Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration offers Masters degrees in Accounting, Accounting Forensics, Business Administration, Human Resource Management, and Real Estate. As with undergraduate curriculum, courses offered through the graduate programs incorporate ethics and special topics modules. In addition, the newest graduate program directly addresses Principle 10 of the UN Global Compact -- Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery. The Master of Science in Accounting Forensics prepares its graduates with skills to investigate the numbers and content of business financials to detect irregularities. Specialized courses include Fraud Examination, Anti-money Laundering, and Computer Forensics and Investigations.
The MBA program allows for concentrations in a variety of areas including Public Administration and Business Fraud. This year a new concentration in Social Entrepreneurship is available. A new credential for Business Fraud is also available allowing a student to further develop their expertise beyond the graduate concentration.
The five-course credential is designed to provide students with in-depth coverage of fraud examination and the skill set necessary to prevent and detect fraud. Because almost every crime can potentially leave digital evidence, knowledge of information systems is required for the credential along with knowledge of accounting and law enforcement. Students will learn how to conduct investigations, present their findings, and identify the “red flags“ that may be present if a fraud is occurring.

6 Co-Curricular Education Student Engagement
RU Net Impact. RU Net Impact, a chapter of Net Impact, was established at Roosevelt University during Academic Year 2009-2010 by WEHCBA MBA Students. Future plans include extending this opportunity to undergraduate business students.
RU Net Impact has established communication channels and a cooperative platform for working with other student clubs at Roosevelt University. These clubs include RU GREEN and the business honorary Delta Mu Delta. Efforts are being made to include these clubs in activities associated with Professional Development sustainability initiatives organized for Academic Year 2010-2011.
Lectures. Students are sensitized to issues impacting the economy through attendance at public lectures sponsored by the Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration. Recent events include
May 9 Annual Heller Signature Luncheon featuring Harry Markopolos, whistleblower for Bernie Madoff Affair. Financial Regulations:Past, Present, and Future—How America Combats White Collar Crime
October 11 Sustainable Organization Practices: Protecting Today and Ensuring Tomorrow” panel discussion including Dr. Michael Brown, Dr. Thomas Head and Dr. Ralph Haug.
November 4 and 5 Green Economy Roadshow. A 2 day conference and expo offering students, faculty, staff businesses and citizens an opportunity to network and interact on the green economy
Opportunities to hear well-known authors are also available to students through Roosevelt University’s Mansfield Institute for Social Justice and Transformation.
Volunteerism. Part of the mission of Roosevelt University is “to promote a more humane and just society,” the CSI encourages students to connect with their community through a variety of service and civic engagement opportunities throughout the year.
7 Service projects are offered throughout the year and are featured in the CSI Student Activities Calendar. There are also toy, food, clothing, blood, and supply drives throughout the year. The personal rewards are many when you give your time and talents to any of the diverse community service organizations. Your work not only adds to your own educational enrichment, but helps to foster an environment which benefits a great number of people. CIA: Community in Action
CIA is a program organized by the CSI in which Roosevelt students take monthly excursion trips and volunteer for non-profit organizations. Look for CIA flyers, the University Calendar and the "What's Happening @ Roosevelt" e-mail for upcoming events. Students can sign-up by contacting the office at [email protected]. New Deal Service Days
The university hosts an annual spring event called New Deal Service Days. New Deal Days, held in Chicago and Schaumburg, connects students, faculty, staff and alumni with local service agencies for a "hands on" opportunity to help others. Service & Civic Engagement Related Student Organizations
There are many other ways to get involved with community service and civic engagement opportunities. Please check out our Student Organizations for more information.
Professional Development. WEHCBA recognizes that engaging students and supporting their capabilities to be future generators of sustainable value requires that faculty members enhance their own capabilities. Here are a few examples of professional Development to help students live productive and successful, ethical lives: Critical Estate, Financial and Asset Planning Protection
Particularly after market events of the last few years, as investors , we are focused on market risk and we hire advisors to undertake asset allocation to minimize risk, but often we pay little or no attention to minimizing the non-market risk that can unexpectedly devastate one’s investment portfolio.
With proper estate and asset planning, which includes asset protection planning, non-market risk can be minimized, or eliminated.
8 November 2011: IFRS: The Comprehensive Review of International Financial Reporting Standards This course provided attendees with complete coverage of all IFRS standards, with contrast to corresponding U.S. GAAP, and what was needed to understand and apply IFRS immediately upon U.S. implementation. The course also presented an opportunity to hear directly from Dr. Barry Epstein, the founding coauthor of a standard reference work, Wiley IFRS (1997 through 2010 editions) as well as the founding coauthor of Wiley GAAP (1985 through 2010 editions).
December 6, 2011: The Financial Crisis: Causes, Consequences, and Policy Responses Presented by Professor John F. McDonald, Roosevelt’s Gerald W. Fogelson Distinguished Chair in Real Estate, this two-hour program provided an overview of the financial crisis so that current developments could be placed in context. The program began with a summary of the causes of the crisis, continued with a discussion of its consequences for the financial system and the economy, and concluded with a survey of the policy responses of the Federal Reserve, Department of the Treasury and the Dodd- Frank financial reform law. Operations The Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration believes that the College and Roosevelt University can best develop the capabilities of students if they lead by example. Two major initiatives demonstrate this effort. HCB Business Incubator
Fall 2011 Roosevelt's Walter E. Heller College of Business initiated its first Incubator Businesses with the goal of furthering our commitment to entrepreneurship and sustainable business.

Heller College graduate betters her life with degree in accounting
Posted: 05/02/2012 Agnieszka “Agnes” Podbial came to the United States from Poland for a chance to live the American dream. At that time, she couldn’t speak English. She had no means of financial support. She didn’t know from one day to the next how she would get ahead.
14 “I am a fighter who knows that if someone else can do something then I should be able to do it too,” said Podbial, who will graduate on May 4 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree in Accounting. Recently inducted into the University’s prestigious Franklin Honors Society, Podbial, who attended classes at the Schaumburg Campus, has cleaned houses, worked as a nanny and clerked in a number of Chicago-area grocery stores in order to get by day-to-day.
At the same time, the Schaumburg resident also has clearly understood the importance of having an education. She took English at Wright Community College. She attended Harper College, unable to pay for more than one class at a time while working full-time to support her family. A student at Roosevelt since 2009, Podbial has a 4.0 grade point average and hopes to one day become a certified public accountant. “When I first started, I literally had to sit down with a dictionary all the time in order to understand what I was doing,” said Podbial, who has been awarded a graduate assistantship so she can work on a master’s degree in Accounting Forensics at Roosevelt starting in the fall.
This spring, Podbial was an intern at PricewaterhouseCoopers(PwC) in Chicago, where she received accolades as a top performer from PwC managers. She also did a stint as a tax accountant for H&R Block, where she has been asked to return next tax season. “Agnes is truly a remarkable student who has overcome many obstacles to get her degree – and she has really flourished during her time at Roosevelt University,” said Mark Holtzblatt, associate professor of accounting and Podbial’s advisor.
While she still works as a nanny to support her family, Podbial’s goal is to one day work as a CPA for one of the nation’s top four accounting firms. “To survive in this country, I know I must have a degree,” said Podbial, who became a U.S. citizen in 2009 shortly before starting at Roosevelt.
“I knew there was nothing in my way that could stop me from going to school and I want others to know that anything is possible if you are willing to try,” she said.
15 Principle 3
Method: We will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership.
Overview
HCB has recently moved to a new building that has been built with sustainable materials. Donors upgraded the LEED rating for the Marshall Bennett offices. Our programs, housed in this new Bronze LEED rated facility are the backdrop for the programs we host and the education we offer to our students and the community. Roosevelt University wins Bronze Sustainability Award Illinois Green Governments Coordinating Council
Posted: 05/18/2012
Roosevelt University’s sustainability efforts were recognized this month with a Bronze Award by the Illinois Green Governments Coordinating Council.
“This designation signals to your community and peer institutions that you stand as a leader in higher education sustainability,” said Eric Heineman, senior sustainability advisor to Governor Pat Quinn. Roosevelt is one of only 10 universities or colleges in Illinois to receive an award for sustainability achievement.
During the past two years, Roosevelt has enacted a number of programs designed to incorporate sustainability into campus operations, including academic and research programs, student activities and community outreach.
LEED-Certified Building In keeping with Roosevelt’s commitment to being a “green” university, the building will be one of the few high rise structures in Chicago that is LEED-certified, meaning it meets
16 requirements for sustainability, water efficiency, energy usage, materials and indoor environmental air quality.
•Bike Room: The Wabash Building provides indoor storage space on the lobby level for as many as 140 bikes and showers and lockers on the fifth floor for cyclists who want to freshen up before they go to work or class.
•Bird Safety: To protect birds from flying into the new, mostly glass structure, the façade establishes “visual noise” to reduce the overall transparency of the building. Architectural features such as the undulating east and west façades further help mitigate the impact on migratory birds. In addition, the entry atrium will not contain plants or trees. These items can be confusing to birds as they can see the trees but cannot approach.
•Mechanical Equipment Commissioning: In order to ensure that all of the building’s energy-related systems are installed, calibrated and are performing as intended, the University hired an independent third party to test all mechanical systems, including boilers, chillers, water heaters, fans and lighting, calibrating them for top efficiency as they go on line in 2012. Roosevelt’s overall aim is for the building’s heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems to perform 25 percent better than energy-efficient standards set by the world-renown American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
•Construction Materials: Over 20 percent of the building’s construction materials contains recycled content; most materials were produced within 500 miles of the University, reducing fuel usage and transport costs; and all of the building’s wood – doors, shims, milling, cabinets and shelving – were purchased from the not-for-profit Forest Stewardship Council, which buys exclusively from foresters who replant /replenish trees that have been cut.
•Green Roof: Nearly 8,000 square feet of green roof is on the building’s fifth, sixth, 16th, 31st and 32nd floors. Native plants requiring little water or maintenance cover about half of the structure’s overall roof area, lowering temperatures at the top of the building, helping to reduce downtown Chicago’s urban heat-island effect as well as the University’s energy costs. Each of the green roofs has a slightly different environment, so the plants were chosen for each roof based on those specific climates.
•Indoor Air Quality: All paints, adhesives, sealants, mastics, carpets and other materials will be non- toxic, containing very low levels of volatile organic compounds.
•LEED Accreditation: LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally- recognized green building certification system .Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in March 2000, LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. The Wabash Building is expected to receive at least a LEED Silver accreditation.
17 •Natural Lighting: The building has a significant amount of natural light (daylighting), as three sides of the structure are glass. Taking advantage of daylight, especially in classrooms and offices, is vital as studies have linked work and learning in daylight with productivity and achievement.
•Occupancy Sensors: The building has occupancy sensors in each room (not including student housing) throughout the building. The occupancy sensors detect both motion and sound.
•Food Pulper: A pulper system was installed in the dining center to decrease the bulk of solid food waste produced. This system has the ability to decrease the volume of this waste by approximately 80%. This savings results in a reduced need for trash haul pick up. In addition, by the system incorporating the use of recycled grey water, the building minimizes potable water usage. The material, once picked up, is turned into compost for use in landscape and planting beds.
•Advanced Recycling System: A built-in, tri-sorter with recycling chute is accessible on every floor. The chute accepts garbage and all recyclables, the unit, at a push of a button, will sort and drop trash, paper, and metal into designated dumpsters in the building’s waste/recycling rooms. A sprinkler system is installed in the trash chute to provide fire protection and a microbe reducing wash down system is installed to clean the chute and reduce odors.
The Sustainable MBA: The Manager's Guide to Green Business. I also write a blog in collaboration with the Principles for Responsible Management Education and the UN Global Compact called PRiMEtime. The blog features best practices around mainstreaming sustainability into management education.
The latest blog entry includes an example from your university. It is entitled Creating More Sustainable Campuses: Water (part 2). To see the blog or to sign up to receive the blog by email visit http://primetime.unprme.org.
Schaumburg Campus Green Initiative http://www.roosevelt.edu/greencampus/currentprojects/sch.aspx
18 The objective of Roosevelt University’s Physical Resources Environmental Sustainability Initiative is to support environmental stewardship by educating the community on energy use; carbon-reduction, institution-specific consideration for alternate methods of transportation, food chain management, waste reduction, sustainable design, procurement and packaging of materials. We will achieve this by:
Integrating and utilizing the technology necessary to reduce our carbon footprint. Contributing our intellectual capital and resources to the collective inter-collegiate effort to improve the sustainability of campus communities. Participating in Roosevelt’s multi-departmental initiatives to create a comprehensive and cohesive "green" campus environment. Transforming student awareness into understanding and engagement, as we provide our campus community with the infrastructure and tools to actively participate in an environmentally sustainable lifestyle. Establishing and maintaining compliance with environmentally progressive goals and standards. President Middleton's Statement
Roosevelt University is committed to being at the forefront of sustainability practices by continuously working to integrate measurable sustainability efforts throughout its campuses and by providing advice and leadership to members of the University community.
19 Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate. The Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate, located within WEHCBA, incorporated sustainable development concepts into design of its recently acquired space. This interior area was designed and furnished utilizing many renewable resources such as bamboo, cork floors and millwork. Additional features include the use of recycled resources for counter and desk tops as well as bulletin boards; all non-toxic materials; automatic light sensors, high efficiency fluorescent bulbs and clear-story lighting into all offices, hallways, and common areas. The Institute is also developing its library to provide information on sustainability. The library was recently expanded through donation of a number of books on sustainability and sustainable practices by the American Planning Association donated
Teen Entrepreneurship Program. Summer 2012 is the third year HCB has sponsored a Teen Entrepreneurship Academy. Forty selected high school students from the Chicago Public Schools area are given a free intensive one-week on-campus training experience in entrepreneurship. Winners receive $500 scholarships to Roosevelt University. All students receive 1 Credit Hour on their RU transcript. The targeted population is for students with little financial reserves but potential for entrepreneurship as identified by teachers and counselors. The program, also known as “Green Teens” centers around having the students (working in small groups) develop various “green” business-based projects. Purdue and Wayne State
20 Universities are active partners. Motorola Solutions Foundation supports this program.
PRME initiatives will be supported by the WEHCBA faculty, the WEHCBA Advisory Board and by a newly created faculty/student task force charged with creating college level ethical codes of conduct for faculty and students. These codes will complement those of the university, and will, by focusing upon the unique dimensions of the business school, serve as a guide in educating and developing our students for the future challenges.
21 Principle 4
Research: We will engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances our understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value.
Overview Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration faculty members, both full-time and part- time, are actively engaged in conceptual and empirical research on PRME related issues. In particular, the activities reflect the values espoused under the UNGC Principles and those important to recognizing the three pillars of sustainability –, economic, environmental, and social responsibilities. Faculty members have worked to share knowledge and collaborate with colleagues in a variety of professional venues. 29 Principle 5
Partnership: We will interact with managers of business corporations to extend our knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges.
Overview WEHCBA’s primary vehicle for networking with managers of business corporations is through development of advisory councils or boards. A board of advisors has been associated with the Marshall Bennet Institute for Real Estate for some years. An active advisory council for the college has been organized over the last two years.
The Dean’s Advisory Council. The Dean’s Advisory Council is comprised of business, government, academic and alumni leaders who are interested in the vitality of the Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration at Roosevelt University. The Advisory Council advises the Dean of HCB on ways to strengthen its instructional, research and outreach programs, improve facilities, expand its base of support and serve its alumni. Among other requirements, members of the council are asked to become and remain informed about the mission, programs, and activities of the College and to help the College establish mutually beneficial partnerships with individuals, corporations and foundations; Consistent with this expectation, the College’s emphasis on professional integrity, sustainable business practices, and global engagement is integrated into regular meetings through choice of presentations such as sustainability and accounting forensics.
The 32 organizations or businesses represented on the Dean’s Advisory Council include, but are not limited to AT&T Global Services, KPMG, Motorola Solutions, and Exelon. They advise the college on a range of issues, from development to current business trends. This initiative has enabled the college to better address the needs of area businesses and to open the discussions about needed revisions to curriculum, internship opportunities, student mentorship availability, and opportunities for faculty and business partnerships

As a planner at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Mr. Okrent worked on The Chicago 21 Plan - A Plan for the Central Area of Chicago - completed in 1973. He founded his own firm, Okrent Associates, in 1979 which has planned such projects as the Museum of Contemporary Art; expansions at the Shed Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium; and dozens of planned developments. Over 40 members of the audience participated in the book signing after the presentation.

Goldie B. Wolfe Miller has achieved success in commercial real estate in the Chicago region and has functioned as a role model for other women in the industry. One of her goals in life remains to increase the resources available to women to make further advances in the field of commercial real estate.
Women are significantly underrepresented in the real estate development industry, particularly in positions that reflect levels of leadership. CREW, the national association of commercial real estate women, conducted a national survey in 2005 described as the commercial real estate industry’s first comprehensive look at the women in the industry. On September 30, 2005, their summary news release of that survey reported that women comprise 36 percent of professionals in the commercial estate industry and “at comparable levels of experience, significantly more men achieve senior level positions than women.” Data and findings from that study can be viewed at: http://www.crewnetwork.org/
36 Program Background
The mission of the Goldie B. Wolfe Miller Women Leaders in Real Estate Initiative is to promote women in the commercial real estate industry to achieve leadership positions. By educating, encouraging, and supporting women in this industry, the goal is to prepare them for senior leadership roles in all sectors of commercial real estate. This initiative incorporates scholarships, mentorship and networking which will be open to women in all facets of the real estate industry.
Graduates from this program will receive a real estate graduate degree from Roosevelt University, Chicago School of Real Estate in the Walter E. Heller College of Business.
In addition, graduates from the program will receive a special certificate designating them as graduates of the Goldie B. Wolfe Miller Women Leaders in Real Estate Initiative.
Networking Night invites local Entrepreneurs to teach students how to network.
Goldie B. Wolfe Miller Women Leaders in Real Estate Initiative. The WEHCBA Real Estate program features the Goldie B. 37 associations. A sampling of these can be found in Exhibit C. The meetings and various activities these organizations conduct present regular forums in which our faculty can engage in meaningful discourse with the business community’s leaders. The scope of these organizations includes the entire spectrum of contemporary business practices. Many of our faculty members hold positions of leadership within these groups permitting a more direct degree of influence.
38 Principle 6
Dialogue: We will facilitate and support dialog and debate among educators, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organizations and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability. We understand that our own organizational practices should serve as example of the values and attitudes we convey to our students.
The Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration facilitates dialog among educators, business, government and other stakeholders through its support of a variety of lecture platforms. Students and alumni of the College are invited to attend and participate in these events. As a result, students have the opportunity to observe and meet individuals who have publicly spoken about critical issues related to societal well-being.

The Heller Lecture Series. The Heller College of Business and Mesirow Financial hosted a lecture and luncheon in May 2011. This is a continuing series that featured Michael Oxley, sponsor of the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act; the second lecture featured Sherron Watkins, a whistle- blower who testified in the Enron hearings. In addition to engaging students in discussions of controversial corporate events, the choice of these two speakers supported dialog among educators and interested stakeholders about social responsibility and sustainability. The Training and Development program in Roosevelt University’s College of Professional Studies also contributed to the success of the event by arranging for Ms. Watkins to meet with students and faculty following a viewing of documentary “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.” The purpose of this event was to allow Ms. Watkins to answer questions concerning her involvement in bringing the Enron scandal to light. Mr. Bob Woodward, the Washington Post reporter who
40 uncovered Watergate and Mr. Harry Markopolos, whistle blower of the Bernie Madoff affair have been the most recent speakers.
Women’s History Month. The Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration sponsored Pamela Evans, chief operating officer for YWCA Chicago, spoke at the Gage Building, 4th floor commons, on Thursday, March 22 as a part of Women's History Month.
•How she became the Chief Operating Officer and what it takes to get there.
•How to climb the "ranks" at any organization as a woman or a minority.
•Employment and volunteer opportunities at the YWCA.
Black History Month. This is a regular event for the college. We have hosted a variety of speakers to celebrate Black History. In February 2012 we hosted the Minority Business Roundtable sponsored by Exelon. A standing room only event provided information to citizens, students and alumni on how to be a successful minority business owner.
Community Engagement. Faculty members, both full-time and part-time, are active and visible contributors through community engagement to the spirit of PRME initiatives in their personal and professional lives. This enables them to bring their knowledge of responsible management principles to organizations and initiatives within their community in a manner that positively impacts its well-being. WEHCBA encourages these forms of community engagement through its formal and informal reward systems. These activities also represent visible commitments to Roosevelt University’s cultural value of community service. The faculty members are benefited through networking with managers of organizations from non-academic sectors and through obtaining valuable insights and experiences that directly enrich their students’ education. Examples of community engagement activities are included in Exhibit D.

Future HCB Initiatives
The Walter E. Heller College of Business Administration is continuing its efforts to fully realize the benefits of the PRME initiative. In the near future, the College will focus on several primary areas of development – Curriculum, WEHCBA Codes of Conduct, Professional Development, and Student Engagement.
Curriculum Development. While it is recognized that curriculum development will be on-going, a defined goal is to develop an MBA Concentration in Sustainable Development. HCB will begin the approval process for an MBA with a concentration in Latin Studies that will include require travel and the HACE leadership training program.
There is also work that will begin on the Certified Financial Advisor program for MBAs with a finance interest.
Development of new courses overseas is underway this summer. Programs in Madrid, Paris, Krakow, Istanbul, and Melbourne are being developed for the coming 18 months.
42 WEHCBA Professional Development. Professional Development activities are being designed to support efforts by faculty members to incorporate the PRME principles into their courses. A new college committee is working on these issues.
WEHCBA Codes of Conduct. A faculty/student task force appointed by the WEHCBA Faculty Council is charged with creating college level codes of ethics for faculty members and for students that reflect the PRME Principles. These codes will complement those that have been adopted by Roosevelt University. However, they will focus on the unique dimensions of the business school that serve as a guide in educating and developing our students for their future career challenges, one of which is to create a more sustainable world. Completion date with faculty approval is anticipated to be Spring 2011.This will build on the WEHCBA statement of its Values and Beliefs that will be recommended for adoption during Fall 2010.
Student Engagement. WEHCBA will support and promote on-going development and engagement of students through club activities, in particular the MBA RU Net Impact Chapter. The Chapter will be directly involved in organization of the September Professional Development event. In addition, the Delta Mu Delta Honor Society will participate and help organize at least one event on Sustainable Business Practices and Corporate Social Responsibility. Plans will be implemented for organizing an RU Net Impact Chapter for undergraduate students.
