Gfwc Youth Writing Competition

GFWC YOUTH WRITING COMPETITION YOUTH POETRY AND SHORT STORY CONTEST

PURPOSE To stimulate creativity and writing skills of youth from grades 4th to 12th and recognize them for outstanding achievement.

CONTEST PROCEDURE ELIGIBILITY 1) Youth from grades 4th to 12th may enter one poem and/or short story on the local Club level. 2) Authors must be of amateur status. Earnings from writing must not exceed $500 annually. 3) All entries must be in English. 4) Manuscripts entered may not have been published prior to the competition and must be an original work of the author. 5) Local Clubs should send their winning entries to the DISTRIC ARTS CHAIRMAN. One entry in each division of poetry and one in each division of short story may be submitted. One winner in each division per state is eligible for GFWC judging.

CATEGORIES There will be three divisions each in the Poetry and Short Story Contest: Division I………..Grades 4, 5, and 6 Division II………..Grades 7, 8, and 9 Division III………..Grades 10, 11, and 12 RULES 1) Entries must be typewritten, double-spaced, printed on one side only with minimum margins of 1”(one inch) on all four sides on 8 ½” x 11” paper. 2) Short Stories limited to 2,000 words. 3) Poems may be any style. Minimum length is 8 lines and maximum length is 50 lines. 4) THIS FORMAT MUST BE FOLLOWED EXACTLY: Entries MUST have the following in the top right hand corner of EACH page. a. Name of author, Grade in school, email address, mailing address, and telephone number. b. Name of local Club, District, and State. c. Category and Title of manuscript. 5) Entries are to be sent to District Arts Chairman postmarked by Monday, February 1, 2010.

MANUSCRIPTS WILL NOT BE RETURNED—AUTHORS KEEP A COPY

The District Arts Chairman will select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each division for Poetry and Short Story, which will be sent to the State Arts Vice Chairman who will select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The GFWC Illinois Arts Vice Chairman will mail the 1st Place Winners to GFWC for further judging.

DEADLINE CLUBS should send entries to District Arts Chairman postmarked by Monday, February 1, 2010. DISTRICT ARTS CHAIRMAN should send district winners to GFWC ILLINOIS ARTS VICE CHAIRMAN, Judy Sochor, 808 S. Jefferson St., P.O. Box 739, Cerro Gordo, IL, 61818 postmarked no later than Monday, March 1, 2010. GFWC Level GFWC certificates will be presented, annually, to the top three national entries per contest, per category.

GFWC ILLINOIS YOUTH ART TALENT CONTEST

PURPOSE GFWC Illinois Federated Club to sponsor art of Illinois youth.

CATEGORIES There will be three divisions each in the Youth Art Talent Contest: Division I…..Grades 4, 5, and 6 Division II…..Grades 7, 8, and 9 Division III…..Grades 10. 11, and 12

RULES

1) Media: Pencil, Pen and Ink, Collage, Mixed Media, or Pastels. 2) Must be an Original Work. 3) Maximum Size: 20” x 24” with mat. NO GLASS.

Entries MUST have the following information on a card on the top right hand corner on the back of the painting.

Student name, address, zip. Grade in School MEDIA Sponsoring Club’s name and District number Chairman’s name, address, and phone number.

The above information MUST be on each entry.

CLUBS should submit their winning entry to their District Arts Chairman postmarked no later than Monday, February 1, 2010.

District Arts Chairman should send their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners before March 1, 2010 deadline to:

State Winners chosen from the District entries will receive a monetary award, which should be used for art supplies, an art scholarship, or purchase of a piece of Illinois art. All District winners entered at State level will be displayed at the GFWC Illinois State Convention.

Paintings must be picked up at GFWC Illinois Convention on the last day (same time as the Arts and Crafts are picked up). Be sure someone is in charge of picking them up.

GFWC ILLINOIS MUSICAL THEATER/DRAMA GFWC SHORT STORY and POETRY CONTEST

PURPOSE To encourage GFWC Illinois Club members to develop and use their creative writing skills; to recognize outstanding creative writing accomplishments among members.

ELIGIBILITY Any GFWC Illinois Club member in good standing with her local Club may enter.

CATEGORIES Short Story—2,000 words or less Musical Theater/Drama—One Act Script (30-60 minutes in length) Poetry—Any style ranging in length from a minimum of 8 lines to a maximum of 50 lines.

RULES 1) Authors must be amateurs; earnings from writing must not exceed $500 annually. 2) Manuscripts entered may not have been published prior to the competition and must be the original work of the author. 3) Entries must by typed, double-spaced, printed on one side of paper only with minimum margins of 1” (one inch) on all four sides, on 81/2” x 11” paper. 4) Entries must be written during the contest year (January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009). 5) Entries limited to one entry per category, per member. 6) VERY IMPORTANT!! THIS FORMAT MUST BE FOLLOWED EXACTLY. Entries MUST have the following typed in the top right hand corner of EACH page: a. Name of author, mailing address, telephone number, and email address. b. Name of local Club, District, and State c. Category and title of manuscript.

GFWC ILLINOIS PAINTING CONTEST

PURPOSE The purpose of the GFWC Illinois Painting Contest is to encourage member’s artistic expression and to recognize and support members’ achievements in painting.

ELIGIBILITY Any GFWC Illinois member in good standing with her local Club may enter at the State level. The contest is open to amateur artists only. Any person who earns more than 1/3 of their yearly net income from artist work will be considered professional and will not be eligible.

RULES 1) Entries must be no larger than 14” x 18” (including matting) and no smaller than 10” x 12”. 2) Entries on materials other than canvas must be matted. 3) NO FRAMES OR GLASS 4) Pastels should be sprayed with a fixative. 5) All paintings must be original. Subject matter is choice of artist. 6) Entries MUST have the following information on a card in the top right hand corner on the back of the painting. Name, address, zip code, phone number, email MEDIA Sponsoring Club’s name and District number

ALL ENTRIES MUST BE BROUGHT TO CONVENTION ON THE FIRST DAY TO THE ARTS AND CRAFTS ROOM. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE PICKED UP ON THE LAST DAY OF CONVENTION (see Convention Program for the exact time).

GFWC CALENDAR CONTEST

“A YEAR IN PICTURES”

RULES:  Photographers must be dues paying members of an active GFWC club  All entries (flower, fauna, vistas and more) will be considered. Judges will look for photo’s particularly suitable for calendars, such as photos relevant to particular months or seasons.  Photos must be horizontal.  Photo entries must be color prints  All photos must be matted. Size of entry (including matting) must be a least 10” x 12” but no larger than 14” x 16” with no frame or glass. All others will be disqualified.  The back of each photo must have an arrow drawn indicating the top.  Each photo must have the following information on the back: GFWC Category Name Photographer’s name Photographer’s address Photographers phone number/email address Name and State of Sponsoring Club Brief caption giving location and situation of photo Photo title

 Photos must be taken during the contest year—January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.  Contestants must be amateur photographers—earning from photography not to exceed $500 annually.  Photos may be taken using film or digital camera. Date stamps should not appear on photograph, nor can digital photos be submitted by email. PHOTOS WILL NOT BE RETURNED – This is a GFWC Contest.

NATIONAL LEVEL CONTEST: The twelve winning photos will appear in the annual GFWC Calendar with GFWC Certificates presented to each winner.

PLEASE NOTE: The same images may be submitted to “The World in Pictures”, GFWC Volunteers in Action”, and “A Year in Pictures”, photo contests, but separate photos must be entered into each contest.

GFWC PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST “THE WORLD IN PICTURES”

RULES:  Photographers must be dues paying members of active GFWC clubs.  Submit entries in one of the following categories: Natural History: flowers, animals, insects, birds, trees, and similar natural scenes. Scenic: vistas, landscapes, seascapes, snow scenes, bridges, parks, mountains, farmland and similar scenes. Feature: human-interest pictures including people, events, and other features.  Entries must be black and white of color photos.  Size of entry (including matting) must be at least 10 x 12 inches but no larger than 14 x 16 inches. All other will be disqualified. No frames or glass. Entries must be matted.  The back of each photo must have an arrow drawn indicating the top.  Each photo must have the following information on the back: GFWC category name Photographer’s name Photographer’s address Photographers phone number/email address Name and State of Sponsoring Club Brief caption giving location and situation of photo Photo title  Photos must be taken during the contest year—January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009  Contestants must be amateur photographers—earning from photography not to exceed $500 annually.  Photos may be taken using film or digital camera. ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBIT AND JUDGING – STATE CONVENTION

This exhibit is open to all Club members who are in good standing. Entrants must be amateur crafts people; earnings from crafts must not exceed $500 annually.

CATEGORIES Afghans Decorative Painting (other) Latch Hook Stamped Cards (5 cards) Ceramics Dolls—Soft Needlepoint Stuffed Animals Comforters Dolls—Hard Paper Art Wall Hangings Crochet Drawing Plastic Canvas Wearable Art Knitting China Painting Sculpture Wreaths Jewelry Embroidery Quilts Holiday Decorations Scrap Art Counted Cross Stitch Scrapbooking Decorative Painting (wood, metal, etc.)

Items not included in these categories will be judged as miscellaneous.

If your District held an Arts and Crafts Contest, those items may be brought to the State Arts and Crafts Contest even if they did not win at District level.

ENTRIES MUST BE SUBMITTED BY A REGISTERED CONVENTION ATTENDEE WEARING A CONVENTION BADGE. (As per Convention rules). During busiest time of Convention registration, only those persons wearing special Arts and Crafts Badges will be allowed in the Arts and Crafts Exhibit Room during arts and crafts check in.

BRING ENTRIES TO CONVENTION—ITEMS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR JUDGING THE FIRST DAY OF CONVENTION ONLY May 20, 2010. Arts and Crafts room will be closed during judging of entries.

IMPORTANT: Each entry should have TWO 3” x 5” CARDS with the following information: ON ONE SIDE: Name, Address, Phone, Club Name and District, Category-Title of Arts and Crafts Entry. ON REVERSE SIDE: Category – State if items is kit or original design plus brief description. PLEASE have these cards ready when submitting entry to Arts and Crafts Room.

PICK UP ENTRIES ON LAST DAY OF CONVENTION (See Convention Program for exact time.) Only persons wearing an Arts and Crafts Badge can sign entrants out of Arts and Crafts Exhibit Room. Items left in the Arts and Crafts exhibit Room after closing time the last day of convention will be sent home with the entrant’s District President.
