Guidance for Assessors for 5HRD (LO 3 & 4)

This guidance is for assessors only and should not be handed out to candidates.

Individual contribution should be assessed using the CIPD skills observation checklist (SOC) or similar, against the guidance below.

Candidates should relate academic concepts, theories and professional practice to the way organisations operate, in a critical and informed way, and with reference to key texts, articles and other publications and by using organisational examples for illustration. All sources must be supported by citations presented in the format that the centre determines.

Activity 1 Candidates should compare and contrast two models of HRD practice and apply each of them to each of professional development and to management AC 3.1 and leadership development. Models should include, for example: learning, performance, strategic HRD and critical HRD perspectives and categorisations such as away from work, at work and through work. Professional development and management and leadership development should be defined. Clear and justified arguments on the merits of each selected model in relation to each of professional development and to management and leadership development should be provided. These will be clearly articulated in the presentation and clearly related to the criteria in the supporting statement.

Activity 2 Candidates should specify two interventions for two different categories of employees in two different organisations. Any categories of employee and AC 3.2 organisation types are acceptable so long as a cross cultural context is evident. The nature of cross cultural development programmes will be specified and discussed. The main characteristics of these programmes such as diverse populations in both internal and external labour markets; language and social differences; the notions of ‘international managers’ and ‘transnational managers’ etc; should be mentioned. Candidates should compare and contrast the two interventions. Clear and justified arguments on the merits of each intervention will be provided in the presentation and clearly related to the criteria in the supporting statement.

Activity 3 The potential use of emerging technologies in the two interventions should be clearly evaluated in relation to promoting diversity and talent management. Arguments should be logical and well supported. Candidates are likely to draw AC 4.1, 4.2 on debates about use of e-learning and related to meanings/definitions attached to diversity management and to talent management. Evaluations will be clearly justified in the presentation and clearly related to the criteria in the supporting statement.
