1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A HOUSE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE KEENAN HIGH 12 SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, 13 AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING 14 SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING 15 THE 2015 CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE. 16 17 Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased 18 to learn that the members of the Keenan High School basketball 19 team of Richland County took top honors at the state competition 20 at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia on Saturday, March 7, 21 2015; and 22 23 Whereas, to the delight of their fans, the Keenen Raiders bested 24 RidgelandHardeeville High School with a 6946 win, giving the 25 Raiders their seventh state trophy, five of those under Head Coach 26 Zach Norris. The final game’s twenty-three point spread brought 27 their season-average victory margin to twenty-five points; and 28 29 Whereas, before the game, the athletes were encouraged to win the 30 title for Keenan alumni who had preceded them and for their three 31 seniors: Kendric Gathers, Javontae Davis, and Antwan Holmes; 32 and 33 34 Whereas, Kendric Gathers worked his way into basketball shape 35 after helping the Keenan football team get to the state 36 championship game and participating in the NorthSouth AllStar 37 game, and he did shape up in style, taking the team’s point guard 38 position and running the team’s offense and defense. Five proved 39 to be his lucky number in the championship game: he posted five 40 points, five rebounds, and five assists; and 41
[3832] 1 1 Whereas, Javontae Davis played with enthusiasm and contributed 2 a significant nine points and eight rebounds to the title triumph; 3 and 4 5 Whereas, the third senior, Antwan Holmes, led the team in scoring 6 in the championship game with twenty-seven points and grabbed 7 eight rebounds, living up to his coach’s description of him as a 8 “man amongst boys”; and 9 10 Whereas, adding to the delight of their success in the final game, 11 the players learned after the victory that each would be fitted for a 12 championship letter jacket, courtesy of Ray Allen, currently a free 13 agent following an eighteenyear NBA career. The team’s 14 associate head coach James Smith had coached Ray Allen at 15 Hillcrest High School when that team won the 1993 state Class 16 AAAA title; and 17 18 Whereas, Coach Norris urged his players all season to take pride in 19 their team: first he lengthened their practices with wind sprints, 20 then issued one-game suspensions, and finally brought Keenan 21 alumni to deliver motivational addresses to them before their 22 games; and 23 24 Whereas, in a sport that demands strength and agility, speed and 25 accuracy, Coach Norris and his skilled coaching staff capitalized 26 on their own athletic ability and training to hone a championship 27 team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable 28 through life both on and off the court; and 29 30 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of 31 Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the 32 Keenan High School basketball players have brought to their 33 school and their community and look to hear of their continued 34 accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore, 35 36 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 37 38 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 39 by this resolution, recognize and honor the Keenan High School 40 boys varsity basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an 41 outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2015 42 Class AA State Championship title. 43
