Geocaching with the Coordinate Grid

You and your group will be doing a little Geocaching today! You will be given a map of the school. You will use this map as a way to unlock the mystery of where all 4 of the secret caches are hidden!

 You will be given the first clue

 You must perform the necessary transformation in order to receive the coordinates to which classroom anywhere in the school that your clue is hidden!

 If you aren’t precise, your clue will not be where you think it is!

 Only one person from the group can go locate the cache so take turns going!

 Write down every coordinate after each transformation.

Given Clue: Starting at the triangle ABC, reflect the triangle over the x-axis. Then translate the triangle down one unit. Record your coordinate. This triangle will be called A’B’C’. Wherever point C’ has landed is where your next clue will be!

Reflection: Now that you have performed all of the above transformations, is there any type of relationship that you see between each transformation? Meaning is there some type of rule or trick that would work any time where you wouldn’t even have to perform the transformation to know what the new coordinates would be? Can you write in terms of (x,y)? Use the back of this paper if necessary.

3 Teacher Set-Up

Given Clue: Starting at the triangle ABC, reflect the triangle over the x-axis. Then translate the triangle down one unit. Record your coordinate. This triangle will be called A’B’C’. Wherever point C’ has landed is where your next clue will be!

Clues to Hide:

Waypoint Clue

Waypoint: A. Starting at the triangle ABC, reflect the triangle over the y-axis and record your coordinate. 1 Let’s call this triangle DEF. Wherever point D has landed is AROUND where your next clue Reflection will be!

Waypoint: A. Starting at triangle A’B’C’, rotate the triangle 90° counter-clockwise (1 turn around 2 the axis). This triangle will be called A’’B’’C’’. Record the coordinates. Rotation

B. Starting at triangle A’’B’’C’’, rotate the triangle 90° counter-clockwise. (This is a total of 180° turn  2 turns around the axis). This triangle will be called A’’’B’’’C’’’. Record the coordinates.

4 C. Lastly, starting at triangle A’’’B’’’C’’’, rotate the triangle 90° counter-clockwise (This is a total of 270° turns  3 turns around the axis). Translate this triangle 3 units to the right. This will be called A’’’’B’’’’C’’’’. Record the coordinates.

D. Wherever point C’’’’ has landed is where your next clue will be!

A. Draw a point at coordinate (1, -5). We will call this point W. Translate point W, 3 Waypoint: units to the right. This is now called: _____ Record the coordinate. 3 Translation

B. At point W’, translate 6 units up. Record the coordinate.

 C. Wherever point W’’ has landed is where your next clue will be!

Waypoint: A. Plot the coordinates: G(-3,0), H (-1, 0), I(-3, -2) 4 Dilation B. Dilate by a scale factor of 2. Record the new coordinates.

C. Wherever I’ has landed, is where your final clue will be. 
