Proposal for Local Sustainability Matching Fund

Round 3

Galena, AK Proposal for Local Sustainability Matching Fund Fall 2013

Project Title: Sustainable Energy for Galena Alaska Inc.

Purpose of Project: A non-profit corporation will be capitalized to sustainably harvest wood for community-scale heating projects. The project will substitute local labor and resources for fossil fuels.

Brief description of project goals, strategy, and key activities (250 words or less): The goal is to break our community’s dependence on diesel fuel. Galena is located on the Yukon River, hundreds of miles from the nearest connected road, but only about 100 miles from the Arctic Circle. Heating fuel (e.g. diesel) is imported from the road system by barge during the summer navigation season. The logistic train makes fuel expensive and risky, and it multiplies the local environmental footprint.

The first goal is to secure a local sustainable energy supply by forming a non-profit corporation that will use the combined assets of the City, the tribe, and the school district to purchase equipment, hire personnel, make contracts, and harvest trees to support a local wood fuel economy.

The strategy is to start with local equipment, personnel, and talents to form and capitalize a consortium, to be named Sustainable Energy for Galena Alaska, Inc. The initial capital will be provided by the City in the form of trucks and heavy equipment, supplemented by grant funding and support provided by the tribe (Louden Tribal Council, which is the federally recognized tribal organization co-extensive with the City of Galena), and a contract and support from the Galena City School District.

Key activities include finalizing the corporation on June 10, 2013, selection of officers, taking charge of the assets from the partner agencies, executing contracts with the resource owner, the City and school, then start harvesting trees as early as October, 2013.
