Introduction: You have been given the opportunity to participate in the Wool4School Fashion Design Competition. The aim of this competition is to allow you to learn more about one of Australia’s most valuable products – Merino wool and to gain an understanding of the inquiry process used to create clothing designs to meet a design challenge

Your design brief: Live life, Love wool! Imagine, the opportunity of a lifetime to head overseas on a student exchange program! For this year’s Wool4School competition we want you to design your perfect winter outfit that showcases your personal style and reflects your chosen destination. Imagine going to New York City, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow or New Delhi. What would you wear? The outfit you design should be made from at least 80 per cent Australian Merino wool. You’ll want to wear this outfit either sightseeing during the day or at the movies at night. You’ll feel comfortable, be the envy of your friends. Remember, your outfit must reflect your personal style, your chosen destination (New York City, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow or New Delhi) and be suitable for a winter climate. You don’t actually need to make the outfit; we just want your design for one outfit, which can include up to four different items of apparel. And, for something new, this year we also want you to include the perfect wool accessory – think hats, scarves, bags, shoes – the possibilities are endless.

Specifications/design criteria: • You must select a destination from the following cities (New York City, Tokyo,Paris, Moscow or New Delhi). • Your design is to reflect your personal style. • Your design should be comfortable to wear and stylish. • Your design must be suitable for a winter climate. • The designed outfit is to be innovative and reference the destination selected. • Up to four items of apparel can make up the outfit. • Your design must include one wool accessory • Your design must be made up of at least 80% wool. • Your design/s must be accompanied with a mood board and creative statement. • All elements of your entry, including design work and creative statement, must be your own original creation and not contain any commercial or third party content (i.e. created by others) . Your designs will be drawn and then scanned for entry. Complete the following steps using the Inquiry Process: STEP 1: Select a city destination (New York City, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow or New Delhi) that you would like to design an outfit for.

STEP 2: Create a mood board. An example is shown in Appendix 1

STEP 3: Design an innovative winter outfit you would like to wear that references your chosen destination that includes an accessory.

STEP 4: Annotate your design using the criteria given on suitable Merino wool materials and write supporting creative statement. An example is shown in Appendix 1.

STEP 5: Upload your entry to the Wool4School site.

STEP 6: Write a short reflection of your performance. You are required to use the inquiry process to create your mood board, design and creative statement. This process allows you to define, analyse, synthesise, evaluate, produce and reflect on the task. Use the scaffolding that follows to assist in completing the requirements of the competition.

The Inquiry Process:

1. Define

2. Analyse  For the city you have chosen, consider the visual cues that you can gain from looking at images of the city using magazines, books and the internet. a. What colours do you think reflect your chosen city? b. What sort of clothing would w worn in a winter in your chosen city? What sort of patterns and decorations do you see in the city? d. Are there any famous people or anything else that represents your city?

3. Synthesise  Create a mood board that will provide inspiration for your design.  Using the internet or magazines, find a selection of images/pictures that reflect the destination you have chosen to design for (New York, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow or New Delhi).  Include some images with colours, famous people and anything else that may represent your chosen city.  Paste the best pictures you have found on a large piece of paper, and see if you can annotate (label) some of the things that you see (this will help you with your design ideas).  Some annotations might include: What type of colours are used? e.g New York buildings are grey and silver Can you see a theme? Eg. Tokyo is a very modern, techno city full of neon signs What type of patterns can you see? Eg. The geometric shapes of the Eiffel Tower in Paris 4. Evaluate  Use your mood board to decide on the focus for the outfit you are going to design.  The word bank below should help to guide you as you design your outfit

5. Produce  Draw 2 different options and ask your friends and teacher which one they like best.  Choose your best design and draw it onto a figure to present it as your fashion illustration with annotations. You will be provided with copies of human figures to use for this.  Your fashion illustration needs to include the following annotations: a. Identify the city destination b. Identify where the outfit will be worn c. Explain the key features of the outfit (use the word bank to help you) d. Identify the wool fabrics (knit or woven)  An example of a layout you may wish to use is provided (without the clothing).  Write a creative statement that includes the following:  an explanation of your design concept and give a description of the garments designed.  how the design is inspired by/ references your chosen destination.  an outline of the design processes used.  a justification of the wool materials identified for the design and relate these to the properties and characteristics of the materials.  Upload your design and creative statement to the Wool4School competition site.

6. Reflect  Write a short statement to be submitted with the creative statement that answers the following questions: a) Did I meet the requirements of the design brief? b) Was I happy with the quality of the finished product? c) Which parts of the assignment did I find difficult? d) What would I do differently if I had to do this task again? e) What new skills or knowledge am I able to take from this task?
