EXTENDED SERVICES UPDATE
Rushmoor Schools Plus Website
The Rushmoor Schools Plus website is available at www.rushmoorschoolsplus.org. The site signposts to local and national information for children and families, points to local news and what’s on stories, contains a photo gallery and a database of local out of school hours activities providers. It also has a Practitioner Resource Area. If you would like anything added to the website, for example an event, please email [email protected]. We would be particularly interested to receive “good news” stories and photographs for the Latest News section on the home page. ******************************

The PIER Nurture Provision
Rushmoor Schools Plus was recently successful in a bid for funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to set up an Early Years Nurture Provision, using space at the Blenheim Building (currently Samuel Cody School), in Lynchford Road, Farnborough.
PIER stands for ‘Provision for Intervention in Emotional Resilience’, and the resource, managed by teacher Jennifer Hill, sets out to help the integration of children into mainstream education. The facility is being adapted ready to open in November, and training is being organised with schools and the Hampshire Educational Psychology team, to ensure that appropriate protocols are put into place when the provision is up and running. ******************************
1 Rushmoor Schoolchildren Inspired
Nearly one thousand 11 and 12 year old pupils from Rushmoor schools attended an inspirational skills festival at Princes Hall, Aldershot on 30th June and 1st July.
Young people from year six and seven from sixteen Rushmoor schools were invited to take part in the ‘Motivating our Middle Years’ festival.
As part of the festival, children worked in small groups to complete tasks set by people from local businesses, who also explained their job roles and how they progressed into their careers from school. Nearly thirty different activities took place, promoting skills including engineering, robotics, hospitality, beauty, media, town planning, sports, business enterprise, and law. The Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, for instance, tasked children to be record executives, thinking about the skills needed to get a new act to the top of the music charts.
The event was organised by Rushmoor Schools Plus, supported by First Partnership, an organisation providing education and business links. It was sponsored by Autodesk Ltd., a Farnborough based company that is a world leader in design, engineering and entertainment software. ******************************
Education Opportunities with Autodesk Ltd.
Rushmoor Schools Plus has benefited enormously this term from a link with Autodesk Ltd., including sponsorship of the ‘Motivating our Middle Years’ festival and the use of the company’s resources for meetings and training. Richard Lane is a Senior Manager of Autodesk Education, leading the collaborative work of the company and Rushmoor Schools Plus. Here is his summary of recent developments:
Skills Festival: Motivating Our Middle Years
Over two days, with the support of Autodesk colleagues from HR and recruitment, we ran a series of hands-on design activities for groups of 10-20 children, leveraging curriculum from Autodesk’s Digital STEAM Workshop. In total 250 children learned about the principles of visual design and spent 15-20 minutes working in teams to create art that applied these principles.
Cove School STEM Day
Over the course of one day, I worked with six groups of 15-20 year ten children, using aspects of a 7-stage design process to solve a particular design challenge. After a 15 minute briefing the children spent about 15-20 minutes preparing designs for an iPhone 3GS case for a young woman called Amy who wanted to achieve the look and feel of an iPhone 4 on a budget.
Also…..
I participated as a business advisor at a Year 9 Enterprise Day at Wavell School and have delivered career presentations at St Bernadette’s, St. Mark’s, Manor Junior, and St Patrick’s Schools. Autodesk staff volunteered at a ‘Ground Force’ day at Manor Junior a few weeks ago. It has been a great couple of months. Working with the children has been fun, and the thank you letters, cards and books are fantastic.
Richard has also now been elected as Parent Governor at his sons’ school in Finchampstead! This has been a real success story for Rushmoor Schools Plus gaining the support of a local company committed to making a difference in the local community. Richard’s career presentations are inspirational for our pupils, and he is happy to work similarly with other Rushmoor schools next term. Headteachers Mark Sammes, Fiona Hodgson, Jo Riglar and Paula Dix will be pleased to commend the careers presentations, and all of Autodesk’s support of Rushmoor schools has been free of charge.
Richard Lane can be contacted at [email protected] if you would like to arrange a visit by Autodesk to your school. ******************************

Arsenal Road Show Comes to Farnborough
Arsenal’s youth membership scheme, the Junior Gunners, and Arsenal Soccer Schools are hitting the road this pre- season with their ‘Gunners on the Road’ interactive experience centre. They are visiting 17 towns and cities across the UK including Farnborough’s Princes Mead Shopping Centre at 9.00am on Thursday 18th August.
Free of charge and open to all, the ‘Gunners on the Road’ tour gives youngsters the chance of a behind-the-scenes peak at what life is like for Arsenal’s stars at their training complex and Emirates Stadium. Starting at the Arsenal Training Centre, the virtual tour begins with preparations for a big match, with participants introduced to Arsenal’s coaching staff via a video message. After grabbing some pictures against virtual Arsenal backgrounds, the youngsters head for the players’ changing rooms at the virtual Emirates Stadium. Laid out as it would be for a typical Premier League game, they will get prepared and start to warm up. When ready to go, the youngsters will sample the adrenaline rush of heading down the players’ tunnel, with the sound of a cheering crowd ringing in their ears, to run out onto an astro-turf football pitch, where they’ll be faced with a penalty shoot out.
On the day there will be the chance to win some great prizes, including two tickets to an Arsenal home match during the 2011/2012 season. For more information or to register your attendance and claim free gifts go to www.arsenal.com/gunnersontheroad. ******************************

NEWS FROM SCHOOLS
Henry Tyndale School
You might recall having been asked to vote for the video that was made with some secondary pupils in the Dell competition. Thank you to everyone who voted and for your support.
Henry Tyndale came a very creditable second in the nationwide competition but there was no prize for second place. The good news though is that, after some significant discussions and negotiations, Dell are looking to donate 11 brand new computers, along with 11 new 'multi touch' monitors. This equates to around £10,000 worth of equipment and Dell will be following up the benefits that these bring for the children for advertising purposes with a possible view to a longer term partnership.
Thank you to everyone who helped them gain so many votes that Dell were keen to take an interest in the school. ******************************
South Farnborough Infant School
20 children and 10 adults from South Farnborough Infant School were delighted to be invited to take their scarecrow entry 'The Prince and Princess of Hearts' to the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show on Monday 4th July. Visitors were able to vote from 45 entries during the course of the show. The school used 2 Rushmoor Voluntary Services minibuses to get to the event. ******************************
The Wavell Charter Festival
Students and staff at The Wavell School held a Charter Festival to launch the new School Charters which have been written by the students. The Charters are based around the UNICEF Rights of the Child and are a key part of the school ethos. The Festival was organised to celebrate the rights that students have and give them an opportunity to showcase their talents whilst recognising that students around the world do not all have the same experiences. The Festival began with the burying of a time capsule containing items that students and staff felt were important to them. Students, staff and visitors watched a variety of performances including solos, the choir, the swing band, the staff band and Nepalese dancing. There was also a Fairtrade fashion show in recognition of the work that Mr
13 Thomas and the students have been doing to raise awareness of the type of work that children in other countries have to do. ******************************

Rushmoor Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB)
Rushmoor CAB are very concerned about the rise in the number of people using high cost credit (payday loans, home credit, rent to buy etc) with APRs of over 2000%. High lending rates and debt repayments often have a devastating impact, with unaffordable repayments often leading to serious problems with rent, council tax, fuel poverty, diets, mental health and house repossessions. Rushmoor CAB are keen to encourage more awareness of the high cost of credit, and to seek alternatives wherever possible - such as from the Hampshire Credit Union whose website is http://www.usal.org.uk/.
There is lots of help and guidance about the cost of credit, and how to budget, on the new Money Advice Service website http://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/yourmoney/interactive/. For anyone needing help from your local CAB go to www.rushmoorcab.org.uk for opening hours and contact details. ******************************
Equine Assisted Learning
A new equine assisted learning (EAL) facility has been set up by Tower House Horses at Micheldever Station, servicing a wide catchment area around Winchester, Andover and Basingstoke. EAL gives children, young people and adults the opportunity to engage in learning through participating in therapeutic activities with horses. There is no riding involved and the horses are carefully chosen so that they are safe to handle and be around. EAL has shown proven benefit with a wide range of people, including those with special educational needs, learning difficulties, poor literacy and numeracy, ADHD, autism, behavioural issues or simply a lack of confidence.
The facility is run by a certified EAL Facilitator and is part of a network of centres set up by the Equine Assisted Qualifications organisation. They can also offer learners a qualification and, if they wish, learners can work towards the NOCN Step-Up Award, Certificate or Diploma through the facility’s accreditation with the Open College Network (OCN).
For more details contact Susie Little, Tower House Horses, on 01962 774245 or 07721 555777. If you would like more information on EAL, please visit www.equineassistedqualifications.com ******************************
15 Changes at Parent Voice
Parent Voice was set up in 2009 as an information and participation service for parents of children with disabilities. The service is currently run by Rose Road and Barnardos in partnership, across Hampshire. County wide membership now stands at 2000 members.
Their initial contract with Hampshire County Council ended on 31st May although this has now been extended to the end of July. This is to allow for an open grant process to take place and for interested organisations to apply. The overall budget has been greatly reduced and the opportunity has been taken to streamline the service and deliver a more localised service.
All communications will be delivered now by one agency across the whole of the county, so that all parents and professionals receive the same information at the same time. Rose Road have been undertaking this task from 1st July. The Parent Voice offices in Fareham and Basingstoke closed on 30th June, and their participation workers have been home based from this date. To contact Parent Voice now please call Lucy Fripp, Information and Events Officer, 300 Aldermoor Road, Southampton S016 5NA. Telephone 02380 721206. Email [email protected]. Please amend the email on your distribution lists to [email protected].
The most significant change is that they will be unable to continue to offer personalised services such as attending Team Around the Child meetings or Disability Living Allowance form completion, but they have prepared factsheets on DLA and will continue to signpost you to other organisations who offer these services. ******************************

Any parents in similar circumstances are welcome to come and join them. Just turn up at The Monkey Puzzle in Southwood, Farnborough on Wednesday 14th September at 7.30pm.
For a chat or more information please contact Tracy Clement on 0754 541 5192. ******************************
Language Classes for Minority Groups
Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Services (EMTAS), in collaboration with Hampshire Learning, has been running various educational classes for ethnic groups in different regions of Hampshire. These classes are Family Language Literacy and Keeping Up With The Children, which are proven to be very popular amongst the Nepali community in Aldershot and Farnborough. The Family Learning programmes are designed to cater to the needs of the parents and carers of school aged children by informing them about various aspects of their child’s educational, emotional and social well being.
The main aim of the programme is to provide parents with vital knowledge about the culture, and life as a whole, in England, as well as an opportunity to learn/sharpen their English language so that they feel confident to support their child’s learning and gain knowledge about the English education system. The learners have gained different qualifications ranging from Entry 1 to Entry 3 and the more advanced learners have been sitting for Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications offered by NCfE.
Besides Family Literacy, EMTAS has also successfully run a Language for ICT course for dads at Beaumont Junior School, Aldershot and Cherrywood Primary School, Farnborough. This programme too has been successful with Nepali dads who are either learning from scratch about ICT or brushing up on their skills and knowledge.
All of the above classes will resume in September 2011 at various locations. For more information contact Smita Neupane, Bilingual Assistant, Hampshire EMTAS, on 01256 330195. Website www.hants.gov.uk/education/ema ******************************
Mayor of Rushmoor’s Challenge to Schools
The Mayor of Rushmoor, Alex Crawford, has invited schools to take part in a competition to raise money for the Mayor’s Charities for 2011-12. The competition is to see which schools in three categories – Infant, Junior and Secondary/College – can raise the most money in the most inventive way. Students from the winning schools will be invited to have tea with the Mayor and Mayoress at the Mayor’s Parlour in the Council Offices and to have a tour of the Council Chamber. Each winning school will also receive a Mayor’s Cup.
17 This is an opportunity for schools to become more engaged in the civic life of their community and to learn about the role of the Mayor and the Council. The competition will run through the Autumn and Spring terms and the prize-giving will take place at the Council Offices on Wednesday 28th March. The Mayor’s charities are Parkside (Aldershot and District Mencap), Nepalese Help, and the Aldershot Town Centre Pastoral Team.
