CURRENT EMPLOYMENT

Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law, University of Minnesota (1999-present) Endowed chair, appointed with rank of full professor, with tenure. Nine-month appointment, with 1/9 summer support. Position includes a full teaching load during the academic year, advising undergraduates and graduate students, and serving on departmental committees.

Director, Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law, University of Minnesota (2000-present) Oversee the work of an endowed academic research center. Duties include selecting and supervising two Silha Fellows (SJMC graduate and University of Minnesota law students) and two or more research assistants; directing law and ethics research projects; producing three issues annually of the Silha Bulletin, a research newsletter; and coordinating the annual endowed Silha Lecture and Spring Silha Forums.

Seventy-Fifth Cleveland Marshall Fund Visiting Scholar, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio, October 16-17, 2002. Delivered the Seventy-Fifth Cleveland Marshall Fund Visiting Scholar Lecture; taught classes in Constitutional Law, Mass Communications, and the First Amendment; spoke at two meetings of Cleveland attorneys and media representatives, and for Cleveland State University faculty; and presented ongoing research on privacy and freedom of information at a law school faculty jurisprudence seminar.

PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT

Executive Director, The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Washington, D.C. and Arlington, Virginia, 1985-1999. Administered and supervised all legal defense and research activities of not-for-profit association providing free assistance to journalists. Had primary responsibility for all association fund-raising, including preparation of grant proposals. Editor of quarterly magazine, The News Media & The Law, and originator/editor of the Committee's First Amendment Handbook, national subpoena survey, Agents of Discovery, and numerous reporter’s legal handbooks and guides, all of which are still in publication and regularly updated by current staff. Served as spokesperson for Reporters Committee, helping to raise the profile and increase the credibility of the organization. Became a recognized advocate, analyst and media source on freedom of the press and Freedom of Information issues.

GRANTS AND FUNDRAISING

From 1985-1999, I had primary responsibility for fundraising for The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a non-membership association depending entirely upon voluntary contributions for support. I raised all operating and special projects support from diverse funders, including foundations, newspapers, television networks, and professional associations. At the time I became Executive Director, the Reporters Committee had a $60,000 deficit and a very small endowment. Over the next 14 years, I raised approximately $4 million to support the work of the association. This figure does not include a grant received by the Reporters Committee in September 1999 for $2.3 million from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, for which I prepared the grant proposal and which was pending at the time of my resignation to accept the Silha Professorship at the University of Minnesota in August 1999.

From 1999-present, at the University of Minnesota, I have held an endowed chair and direct an endowed center. I do not need to undertake fundraising or grant-seeking. However, I have been the recipient of the following grants since becoming a full-time faculty member:
