Transitive – an action verb is transitive if it directs action toward someone or something named in the same sentence. Ex.) Marie opened the package. The catcher chose a large, soft mitt.

Intransitive – an action verb is intransitive it if does not direct action toward someone or something named in the same sentence. Ex.) Marie spoke into the mike. The catcher shouted angrily.
