Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce - Young Professionals Committee CAREER DAY 2014- Presenters Orientation Packet 1. Career Day Overview o This is the 7th Annual Wicomico County Career Day for high school freshmen. It is a joint effort between the SACC Young Professionals (YP) Committee and the Wicomico County Board of Education. The event includes students from all 4 public high schools, as well as Salisbury Christian School and The Salisbury School. It is being held on Wednesday, March 19, 2013. o Career Day is a series of events. First, teachers provide a “Career Day Orientation” to students. They help get students thinking about their future, introduce students to the rules of the event and explain the essay contest. Students then use scheduling software to register for 4 Career Presentations they would like to attend (out of the available presentations). The next step is ... o The “Main Event” which is held at Salisbury University Campus in Henson, Perdue, and Devilbiss Halls. There are two sessions: the AM session and the PM session, with four periods in each session. On the day of the “main event”, students are bused to the campus. They will follow their printed schedule and switch classes between their 4 selected presentations. o The final step is the “Essay Contest”. On the day of the event, students will be taking notes in preparation for this assignment. They will be required to write an essay on “What do you want to be after you graduate high school?” The essays are judged by a panel of Young Professional Committee members and first, second and third prizes will be awarded to students at each school.

2. Career Day Event Logistics o Presenter Arrival Times: - AM & Full day presenters: Please arrive at Perdue Hall at 8:45am to check in and set up for the morning session and return to your classroom 12pm for the afternoon session. - PM presenters having lunch: Please arrive at Perdue Hall at 11:15am. - PM presenters NOT having lunch: Please arrive at Perdue Hall at 12pm. o Room assignments will be provided when you check in. o Lunch will be provided in the Worcester Room 11:15am-12pm. o All rooms are equipped with a computer and projector. Presenters are asked to utilize the University’s technology. SU will have all equipment turned on & logged in for presenters so we ask that if you have a computer presentation, please bring your presentation on a thumb drive. The University will not be available to help troubleshoot with external equipment, so please use the equipment in the room. Please advise as soon as possible if you have any additional requests for the room. o Campus map will be e-mailed out to you with any final details. o *Optional Presenter Orientations will be held at the Chamber on Wednesday, March 12 at 12pm and 5pm. Please indicate if you wish to attend on your registration form.

3. Presentation Information o What to Wear – Business casual or your normal business attire. o What to Say – additional information follows with suggestions for talking points. Remember you only have 20 minutes per period. o How to Act – Professional! If students are unruly, there is a room for them to be sent to, don’t let the students rule the room. Teachers will be in the hallways for assistance. Please do not let students out of classroom prior to the end of the session.

4. Emergency Contacts/Weather Events/Additional Information o Please provide your cell phone number to Sophia Smecker so we can contact you if there is a problem. o If Wicomico County Public Schools are closed due to weather, the event will be cancelled. o If Wicomico County Public Schools are delayed, we will still have the afternoon session. o Park in the lot off of Route 13 (Perdue Hall Lot), there will be plenty of space since SU is on Spring Break. o If there are any questions or problems the day of the event, please call: - Sophia Smecker, YP Liaison, 215-290-4275 - Michelle Marriner, YP Co-Chair, 443/ 235-4126

What is expected of you as a Presenter?

The goal is to share your personal experience and knowledge. Include what you think is necessary for a student to know if they want to pursue a career in your field:

What responsibilities/duties are involved in your job?

What schooling did you go through?

How did you get to where you are now?

Do you have tips or stories to share?

Possible Talking Points: o Job Description (examples of duties/projects) o Education Requirements o Personal Career Path o Tips/Advice o Classes I wish I took in high school

You may talk about your company or organization, but keep in mind the main focus should be on your field and your career path. Feel free to share any scholarship or internship opportunities your company or organization may offer that would benefit the students.

Remember, you will be presenting to high school freshmen so be sure to make your presentation interesting and fun. Relate things you do in your career to the students in a way they will understand. Share real-life examples and include the students in your presentation.

Tips for Keeping the Students Interested : o Provide free giveaways / promo items o Ask questions / poll the audience o Get the students to ask questions o Play a quick game o Perform a show & tell with pictures and objects o Do a class experiment or solve a problem together The Do’s and Don’ts of Speaking to Students: DO DON’T Dress appropriately in everyday work clothes Wear controversial clothing/slogans Introduce yourself & use simple terms Swear or use derogatory language Speak loud & clear Use inappropriate gestures Use good posture & portray professionalism Let the students be rude to you

SIX STEPS OF THE PRESENTATION

STEP 1: Build Rapport o Give a warm welcome o Provide business cards o Give a short introduction of yourself and why you are qualified to be giving your speech

STEP 2: Set Agenda o Establish control of the meeting o Let the students know what you are going to review

STEP 3: Present Career Overview o Present overview of what your field of business does o Describe your everyday tasks o Explain education & skill requirements

STEP 4: Probe for Needs o Ask the students questions o What do they want to know, have questions prepared STEP 5: Present Solutions o Answer any questions they might have

STEP 6: Close the Meeting o Sum up what you talked about o Explain the advantages, benefits & opportunities available in your career field o Discuss any internship opportunities
