Thank you for agreeing to serve as a presenter at an ASA’s CME Activity. This agreement is designed to help you understand ASA’s requirements and provide resources and information about presenting CME material.
Faculty/Speaker Guidelines for CME Presentations As an accredited provider of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), ASA must ensure that all CME programs meet all ACCME Essential Elements and Guidelines while maintaining the highest standards and expectations of its audience. Listed below are faculty/ speaker guidelines to assist you in developing the highest quality educational content and materials. These guidelines also ensure compliance to the ASA’s CME Policies.
1. Learning Objectives: The presentation should be consistent with the approved learning objectives. 2. Content Balance and Scientific Integrity: Presentations are based on evidence accepted within the profession of medicine as adequate justification for their indication and contraindications in the case of patients. Research, including clinical trial data conforms to generally accepted standards of experimental design, data collection and analysis. Presentations address areas of physician practice and are balanced, discussing both the risks and benefits of recommendation, treatments or manner of practice. 3. What is NOT allowed: Identifiable patient information Brand names, Product or manufacturer names Use of copyrighted materials (without permission) if presentation will be published or distributed outside of activity Promotional content
Handouts Handouts are highly valued by participants because they reinforce and clarify verbal information and aid recall. Here are some things to consider when preparing handouts:
PowerPoint slides make effective handouts when they are printed in black and white with the background removed. If you elect to provide a text-based handout, bullet point form is more effective than paragraphs. Include important ideas and significant information from your presentation Copyright guidelines apply to all educational materials. ASA reserve the right to edit material that will contravene copyright.
CME Credit for Presenters Faculty earn CME credit for learning that occurs in the preparation of the presentation Formula: is 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ per participant credit (or a 2:1 ratio) Credits are awarded on time metrics and can be designated in 15 minute increments No credits are given for repeat presentations of the same material Claiming of credit directly through AMA completing the Direct Credit Application .
Permission for Publication of Material ASA may distribute protected PDF files of PowerPoint presentations, handouts or materials with speaker approval on the ASA web site with appropriate attribution to all speakers. All speakers retain copyright ownership of their presentations.
