2 Welcome to Phenix Christian School
Greetings in Christ!
It is our distinct honor and privilege to welcome you to Phenix Christian School, a ministry of First Assembly of God. The Word of God plainly states that children are “…a heritage of the Lord”, and with this blessing comes the responsibility of raising your child. We count it a privilege that you have decided to allow Phenix Christian School to be a part of the educational development of your child. We promise to work hand in hand with you throughout this year.
The basis for any school is its quality of education, and that is our desire for your child. Our goal is for each student to excel academically as well as spiritually. For this reason, we believe our student body is one of the finest in the area. The vision for Phenix Christian School has been God given. In recognition of that, if you do not have a home church, we would like to invite you to check out all of our other ministries offered here at First Assembly.
We personally want to thank you for entrusting our school to be a part of the development of your child. It is our prayer that all will become more like the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ, and with your prayers and support, we have no doubt this will be the greatest year ever.
In His Service,
Reverend Barry Danner, President

3 Our Vision To join with parents in providing a Christian based moral foundation that will impact the character of each student for life, affording them the opportunity to develop into productive and treasured citizens serving not only the Lord, but also society.
Our Mission Phenix Christian School’s mission is to maintain a family oriented atmosphere where “learning is fun”, while building a solid educational and Christian foundation.
Our History August, 1984, Phenix Christian School started as a ministry of First Assembly of God, Phenix City. The mission of Phenix Christian School is to provide an affordable, academically sound, Christian-based education for those families in the Phenix City and surrounding area that would like to take advantage of a private school education.
Since Phenix Christian School’s conception in 1984, we have had a vision to educate the community not only in the Word of God, but also with an educational foundation that will enrich each and every child’s life. That vision continues.
Through the years, Phenix Christian School has experienced many changes, yet has never forsaken the mission of offering a strong academic education at a competitive tuition rate for families.
Presently, Phenix Christian School houses students from K3 through 5th grade. Utilizing the A BEKA curriculum, a well respected Biblical-based curriculum, qualified teachers are able to present a Christian life-style and clear academic lesson which will prepare your child for his/her future. Our Students Our school houses students from K-3 up to the 5th grade. The student body consists of children from the surrounding areas of Lee, Russell, and Muscogee counties. We will accept a maximum of fifteen students per class room. This allows each teacher ample one on one time with each student.
Phenix Christian Philosophies
Phenix Christian School’s Philosophical Stand We desire to work together through the home, the church and the school to train up our children in the way they should go. Repeatedly, parents express their reasoning for enrolling their child in Phenix Christian School is to remove them from “the worldly” environment and atmosphere that dominated the public school system. We recognize the need to maintain a sense of separation from the worldly trends although we are not segregated from the world. Therefore, Phenix Christian School has to establish some standards that are intended to continue the attitude that “even though we are in the world, we need not be subject to worldly philosophies”.
Understandably, there are those who are part of the Phenix Christian Family that are not part of the sponsoring church. Nor do they practice the doctrine and policies of the church. Whereas it is not the ministry of First Assembly of God, as the sponsor of the Phenix Christian School, to proselyte or propagate 4 its doctrines; it is, however, desired of the sponsoring church that Phenix Christian School maintains a standard from the world. Therefore, some guidelines need to be established so that the personal practices of the home, church, and school will not conflict. The guidelines are reflective of the philosophy of the sponsoring church and serve as a means of educating students with Godly principles not worldly practices and fads.
Holidays and Fund Raisers Halloween-Phenix Christian School will in no means recognize Halloween. Thanksgiving is celebrated at Phenix Christian School as special time of thanks to God for all He has given us. Easter will be recognized as the time of the resurrection of Christ! This is a time to acknowledge the new life God creates in each of us as we blossom into Christians. Christmas will be celebrated as the birth of the Savior. Gift giving will be shared as a symbol of the gift God gave us on that day. Santa Claus will not be a part of our celebration. Fund Raisers-Raffles and activities that involve a “chance of gain” will be prohibited.
Philosophy of Education-Phenix Christian School is dedicated to the philosophy that Christian education is the traditional approach to education in the United States. We interpret the traditional approach to mean that education brings in harmony the ideals of American democracy with a Bible-based, Christ-centered curriculum. Our primary goal is to show children how to live rather than how to simply make a living. However, the Bible and the teachings of Christ are not substituted or separated from the academics. Rather, they are integrated into the entire educational program very much like the first schools in American history. With Phenix Christian School having the traditional Christian philosophy of education, we feel each student can develop to his or her full potential, academically, socially, and physically as well as spiritually.
Philosophy of Instruction-Phenix Christian’s goal is to continuously provide and encourage a learning environment that will enable each student to: Be responsible for their learning. Learn to work well with others. Learn to think and solve problems effectively. Learn to recognize and do quality work.
Philosophy of Student Discipline - Discipline and its application at Phenix Christian School is grounded in scripture. (Refer to Proverbs 12:11; 13:18; 24; 22:15; Ephesians 5:1-4; Hebrews 12; I Corinthians 13; and Revelation 3:19) Just as discipline and disciple come from the same root word, so it is, we believe that the full measure and intent of discipline should not be only to correct behavior, as well as to build up, encourage, and train an individual in concepts as well as behavior that is pleasing to God. God admonishes us that reproof and correction are to be administered in love and with a measure of grace and compassion. In this context, discipline must never be administered vindictively, in anger or devoid of forgiveness, or in a manner that is demeaning to the worth of an individual. Discipline is ordained of God for the building of character and training of behavior.
Academics Phenix Christian School is a member of the Association of Christian Teachers and Schools (ACTS). Curriculum-A Beka Homework-Any Homework assigned to a student is expected to be completed and returned in a timely manner. Due to our Christian values and beliefs in church and family, we do not assign homework on Wednesday or Fridays. Grading System-At the close of each grading period, teachers will report grades that document the level of mastery of subject competencies. The grading code for Kindergarten – 5th grade is as follows: 95-100 A 85 - 94 B 75 - 84 C 70 - 74 D 0 - 69 F I – Incomplete (students are given a chance to make up work)
5 Grading Periods, Progress Reporting and Report Cards-Phenix Christian School operates on a nine week interval. Four and a half weeks into the grading period, a progress report will be sent home to inform the parents of the progress made and the areas that need to be focused on before the end of the nine weeks. Then the report cards are issued at nine weeks. Each student’s ability, attitude, and application are taken into account. Report cards should be signed by a parent and returned immediately to the teacher. Parents should set up a conference with the teacher if there are any concerns regarding your child’s report card.
Parent/Teacher Conferences-Phenix Christian School sincerely strives to function with the welfare of every student in mind; therefore, conferences regarding the pupil’s academic progress, behavior, or attitude may be held at any time. The parent or teacher may initiate these. Parents desiring a conference with the teacher should make an appointment in advance. Scheduled conferences should be held before or after school hours. We ask that parents refrain from calling the teacher or student during class time. To do so would interrupt the instruction of the entire class.
Honor Roll Requirements The Phenix Citizen Newspaper will publish the names of all honor roll students at the end of each grading period. All A Honor Roll – Students whose grades are 95 and above will be on the “A Honor Roll”. A-B Honor Roll – Students whose grades range from 85 through 94 and above will qualify for the “A-B Honor Roll”.
Testing-During the spring of each year, all students Kindergarten – 5th grade will be given the Stanford Achievement Basic Test. This test is given nationwide covering broad subject matter categories. This helps to assure that each student makes a full year’s academic progress.
Important Notes on fees and dues Please make all checks payable to Phenix Christian School or “PCS”. All tuition and extended day payments are due on the 1st of the month, by the 10th of the month. A late fee will be assessed in the amount of $30.00 for all accounts not paid by the 10th. The status of students whose tuition or other charges is over 30 days in arrears will be reviewed to determine whether they should be retained in the school. If there are special mitigating circumstances, the school should be notified promptly, preferably in writing. Students with delinquent accounts may be refused admittance to class until the account is brought up-to-date. Report cards and permanent records will be held in the school office if tuition payments are not current. No student will be allowed to participate in graduation or to return the following year if there is an outstanding balance due on the account.
Return Checks: Any check not honored will be assessed a $35.00 fee. Students will not receive books unless their book fee is paid. Phenix Christian Dress Code “Neat and Modest” Do’s Dress neat and clean. Wear dresses, skirts and shorts at least knee length. Wear tennis shoes, sandals or dress shoes. Bring tennis shoes for outside play and PE. Wear socks or tights. Wear jacket on cool days.
Don’t Wear items that depict/allude to alcohol, drugs or tobacco, firearms, profanity, rock or rap music, offensive slogans, wrestling, horoscopes, magic, anything related to the occult, or inappropriate innuendoes, and other trendy concepts such as Pokémon, SpongeBob, Harry Potter, Bratz, etc. Wear tight-fitting, frayed, ragged, or sagging clothes.
We have a liberal dress code. However, we ask that the students abide by the dress code and not attempt to test its limits. Neat and modest are the operational terms. All students should become familiar with the dress code. When in doubt, do without. Violation of Dress Code
6 Any student who’s clothing or physical appearance is not within the spectrum of acceptability for students in a Christian environment will be sent home to change. The dress standards are not all-inclusive, but to provide guidelines for acceptable and non-acceptable clothing. Habitual violation of school’s dress code may result in suspension. Phenix Christian would prefer to leave such decisions to the students and their parents, however, we are often forced to use these guidelines. If in doubt, do without. Phenix Christian School administration reserves the right to determine inappropriate attire and to impose dress restrictions as deemed necessary.
School Day School Hours K3-K4 8:30-12:00 1st-5th 8:30-3:15
Attendance-Regular and punctual attendance is required of all students. It is necessary for successful accomplishment of schoolwork. An absence is considered “excused” if it involves a student’s illness, a death in the immediate family, school sponsored educational activities or has previously been approved by the administration. Any student who has been absent must present a note explaining his absence upon his return. All students are expected to be present everyday that school is in session. All excused absences will allow the student to make up all work missed. Any student who misses over 20 days in a year will fail for the year unless a doctor’s excuse has been provided showing medical reason for absences. Early dismissal requires a note to be brought to the homeroom teacher by the student before or during the first period of the day. Parents picking up students during the school day must report to the office before any student will be released. Under no circumstances may a student leave campus without checking out through the office. A reminder, twenty (20) absences within a school year, without a written doctor’s statement, may result in student repeating a grade or not being accepted for enrollment the following year.
Tardiness-All students are expected to be in their classroom, at their desk, and ready to being the day by 8:30a.m. Students who are tardy more than 10 times for the year will not be eligible for the Perfect Attendance Certificate. 10 tardies = 1 unexcused absence
Chapel-Chapel is generally held on Friday. Attendance is compulsory and parents are invited to all chapel services.
Drop Off and Pick Up-There will be a teacher assigned each day to this duty. We ask that parents drive thru and drop off or pick up. We find that there is less confusion this way and increased safety for our students. If there is a matter that parents need to discuss with a teacher, parents should send a note or schedule a meeting. Parents will be given a window sign during open house so that the teacher can familiarize themselves with vehicles and the appropriate child. Parents should not park and walk their child in!
Students not enrolled in extended day who are dropped off at school before 8:15am and those not picked up by 3:30pm will be charged an hourly drop-in rate.
Arrangements for after school rides, extended care; etc. should be made before the student arrives at school.
Extended Day-Phenix Christian School opens at 6:30 AM for before school daycare and remains open for after school daycare until 6:00 PM. (CLOSED DURING All School Holidays) The charge for before and after school (extended) daycare is: K5 …………… $80.00 a month 1st – 5th ………..$75.00 a month Preschool …….. $150.00 a month Hourly drop-in rate is $3.50 per hour 7 If a child is left in extended care after 6:00 PM, there will be a charge $1.00 per minute.
Withdrawal Procedures-A written request from the parent or legal guardian is required one week before withdrawal. All financial matters should be handled through the school office.
Grades and proper records will be cleared through the teacher and filed in the office. A written request for record transfers to another school should be on file with the secretary. Report card, transcript, and other records will be released to appropriate party when withdrawal forms are completed and all financial matters are cleared. No records or transcripts will be released if there is an unpaid balance. Food Services Breakfast/Lunch-The school breakfast and lunch program is designed to provide children with nourishing meals at a minimum cost. We try to make mealtime a wholesome and social experience where desirable food habits can be emphasized. Phenix Christian School will provide lunches for K3 and K4 (full day) students only. Students in kindergarten thru fifth grade will have the option of purchasing breakfast and/or lunch at the prices listed below. Each meal will come with milk. A lunch calendar will be sent home at the end of each month. Should you choose to send your child’s lunch please be sure that items are ready to eat and do not need to be heated as this takes the teacher away from the class and does not allow ample time for the teacher/staff member to take lunch. Cost Students Adults Breakfast $1.50 $2.00 Lunch $2.00 $3.00 Milk $0.75 $0.75 Soda $0.50* $0.50 *Sodas may be purchased by students on Fridays only.
Lunch Room Hours Breakfast: All students: 07:30 to 08:15 Lunch: K5 and Grades 1-5: 11:30 to 12:00 K-3 and K-4: 12:00 to 12:30 Health Service
Emergencies, injuries and illnesses at school-When students are injured or become ill at school; the parent/guardian will be notified at once. In the event a student needs more than minor first aid attention, the parent/guardian will be notified and the student may be transported to the nearest hospital. Phenix Christian School is not responsible for costs of treating injuries and cannot assume liability for any other cost associated with an injury.
Normally, any student having a temperature of 100 degrees or higher will be sent home. Parents should not send students to school with fever or if they have been sick overnight (vomiting, diarrhea).
Medication at School-Phenix Christian School does not furnish any medication. State law forbids personnel from giving medication to a student unless the medication is in its original container. Prescription medication must have written instructions and be signed by the parent/guardian AND the physician. Physician’s orders are only good for on (1) school year. A physician’s written order is required for any medication change. Over the counter medications will not be given out under any circumstances. Parents who feel the need for such medication shall be required to come and administer it themselves.
Communicable and Infectious Diseases-Should your child become ill with a contagious disease such as chicken pox, measles, etc., report it to the school office immediately. This is important to the welfare of other students.
Head Lice-Head lice are one of the nuisances that parents of students occasionally find themselves dealing with. Phenix Christian School follows the Department of State Health Services recommendations. Individual head checks are performed on an as needed basis. Mass screenings are disruptive and not warranted. Parents are encouraged to periodically check their student’s head for lice. When live lice are discovered at school the parent or guardian will be contacted to pick up and treat their student as soon as possible. Students will be allowed to return to school after one (1) treatment. One (1) day of absence will be excused to allow for treatment. When returning to school the student must be examined by a faculty or staff member before being admitted to class. 8 School Insurance-Student insurance is offered to all students on an optional basis. For details, contact the school office.
Student Disciplinary Procedures School Rules I will walk quietly from place to place. I will listen and follow directions I will be kind and respectful to others. I will be prepared for school.
Minor Offenses: Major Offenses: Disruptive behavior in class Failure to accept responsibility for academic work Disobedience of specified rules Disrespect for those in authority Throwing objects Lying Meddling with other people’s property Cheating Chewing gum Stealing Littering Fighting Running in buildings Abusive language (name calling, etc.) Not bringing books to class Cursing Continued tardiness Public display of affection Disrespect for the church and/or school property
Action plan Minor offense 1. Verbal warning 2. Loss of recess 3. Time out 4. Silent lunch
Major offenses (all major offenses are to be documented) 1. Sent to the office to have the secretary call the parents 2. Conference with the teacher and parent. 3. Principal will take corrective measures which may include corporal punishment (see below).
Corporal Punishment (Spanking) Knowing that God’s Word authorized the use of corporal punishment or spanking (Proverbs 3:12; 10:13; 13:24; 19:18; 22:15; 23:13-14; 29:15-17; Hebrews 12:5-7), in certain situations, Phenix Christian School will administer this method of punishment to help the student overcome his or her wrong and/or disruptive behavior. However, such punishment is seldom needed.
The school is very much aware of the increasing incidence in recent years of the misuse of this method. Realizing that each parent has a God-given right and responsibility regarding their children, we believe that parents have a right to know exactly how the school uses corporal punishment.
1. Corporal punishment is never used for a first or minor offense. Absolutely no student will receive this method of punishment unless there have been repeated correction and warning, usually several trips to the administrator. And only after written and verbal communication with parents has been made. 2. Corporal punishment is done privately and confidentially. Privately meaning out of sight of other students and without public fanfare. 3. Parents will be notified by phone before corporal punishment is administered. Upon such notification, any parent wishing to do so may come to the school and witness the punishment, or apply it themselves. 4. The administrator will be responsible for all corporal punishment. There will always be an adult witness (generally the child’s teacher). 5. Anytime this method of punishment is administered, the administrator will make certain the student understands clearly that Christian punishment is only used for correction and never retribution.
9 6. The exact offense is carefully reviewed with the student, so that they will understand why they are being punished. 7. Each student will be told how many swats will be given. Seldom will more than one swat be administered. 8. The student will always be reassured that he or she is loved by Jesus, the teacher and the administrator. 9. A report of each incident shall be placed in the student’s cumulative folder and a copy will be sent home to the parents. 10. Finally, the person who administered punishment will pray with/for the student. 11. Should there ever be any question whatsoever regarding the use of corporal punishment; any parent should feel free to contact the school and make an appointment to discuss the matter. If a student’s behavior and attitude are in such conflict with the philosophy and objectives of Phenix Christian School the student will be asked to leave.
Parents who seek re-admission of a student to the school shall send a written request to the administrator should they feel that their child has changed. It is the school’s privilege and right to deny enrollment of a previously expelled student.

The school is not responsible for personal property, which may be broken, lost or stolen. All items must be labeled with student’s name.
Radios, Etc. - Students are not allowed to bring radios, tape players, televisions, rock or country music albums, CDs or tapes to school. Pagers and cell phones are not to be brought into the classroom. It is your responsibility as a parent to make sure these things do not find there way to school.
Telephones – The school telephones are to be used by students only for emergencies and with permission from the office.
Change of address – It is very important for the welfare of your child that the school office is notified immediately when there is any change in the address, telephone number, work number, or other home status for a child or parent. It is critical that the school office has up-to-date information available in case there should be some kind of emergency with your child during school hours or extended care.
Property – Phenix Christian School is God’s property. Respect for the appearance and care of our school is part of our Christian testimony. Willful destruction of school property or contents will not be tolerated. All damage must be paid for whether willful or accidental. Students should report any damaged furniture or other school property to the office immediately. Sitting on desks, defacing desks, throwing things, littering, writing on walls, or chairs will not be tolerated.

Parental Commitment
Annual Open House-We will conduct an Open House program for parents and students each year prior to the first day of school. All families are encouraged to participate in our annual open house. This is our
10 opportunity to introduce you to the faculty and staff as well as update you on any new policies or procedures for the upcoming year. You will also have a chance to visit your child’s classroom and get acquainted with their teacher.
Parent/Teacher Conference-Phenix Christian School sincerely strives to focus on the welfare of every student, therefore, conferences regarding the pupil’s academic progress, behavior, or attitude may be held at any time. The parent or teacher may initiate these. Parents desiring a conference with the teacher should make an appointment in advance. Scheduled conferences should be held before or after school hours. Parents are encouraged to ask for conferences at any time they feel it is necessary. Teachers welcome such opportunities. We ask that parents refrain from calling the teacher or their student during classes. Likewise parents’ visits during school hours are discouraged; this takes valuable teacher time away from students. To do so would interrupt the instruction of the entire class. Teachers shall initiate a conference with each parent at the end of the first six week grading period.
Parent/Teacher Fellowship-Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) is an organization made up of our parents that assists with events and programs with the goal of bettering our school. If you would like to join this organization please check the appropriate box on your delegation statement. The PTF will be responsible for conducting four programs; our first one will be Tuesday, September 16, 2009 at 7:00pm. These meetings are to acquaint the parent with the faculty, recognize our student’s academic achievements, and to showcase the students through some form of student presentation. In our first meeting we will nominate officers and verify all future PTF dates.
Fund Raising-It is the responsibility of Phenix Christian School to provide in its budget for all the activities, which constitute the formal education of its students. Budgets are limited, however, and in order for the school to make available additional educationally valuable activities to enhance the experiences of the students, other financial resources may be applied. No school (not even public schools and universities) can operate without outside funds to supplement the needs that arise throughout the school term. Fund-raising programs can also add educational value, as they provide a sense of responsibility and accomplishment to each student. A nominated member of the PTF and the school administrator will coordinate all fundraisers. We trust that every family will do a fair share of the work as we join together in providing a solid foundation for each child.
School Communications-From time to time, letters and other communications will be sent to parents via the students or through the mail. Please read these. They will keep parents posted on matters of interest to the parent and the child.
Field Trips - Field trips are a part of the instructional program. Parents will be notified beforehand of all activities and fees and are responsible for signing all permission slips. It is your responsibility to be aware of the information sent home regarding all trips, dates, and fees.
Buses and vans are reserved for the students and staff of Phenix Christian School. Parents and other family will be expected to provide their own transportation should they choose to attend any school sponsored field trips. Please notify your child’s teacher should he/she be riding in a personal vehicle on a field trip. It is also imperative that if any student will not be returning to campus following a field trip that they be signed out by a parent/guardian through their teacher or group leader.
After School Rides and Extended Care-Arrangements for after school rides, extended care; etc. should be made by parents before the student arrives at school. Emergency arrangements should be made through the school office.
Severe Weather/School Closing-Students of Phenix Christian School will not be sent home early during severe weather or in the period of time designated by the U.S. Weather Service as a “tornado warning”. Students will be released through the school office to parents/guardians or other adults, previously designated as driver in a car pool, should you desire to have them picked up. The media will announce “Severe Weather Days”. Listen to the station for “Phenix City School” closings if they are closed we will also be closed.
In Conclusion
11 Phenix Christian School belongs to, and is blessed by, our Lord. It will be as strong (or as weak) as the cooperative spirit demonstrated by the combined efforts of parents, students, staff, and administration.
Therefore, let us work and pray for the good of our dear children. When we have questions, or when we hear negative “news” let us not spread discord by adding to it. Instead, let us go directly to the teacher or administration and work through the situation. Peace is wonderful; peace brings healing. May God’s peace abide with us!

12 Please sign and return this page of the handbook to your child’s teacher no later than Friday, August 21, 2009. Tips for a Successful School Year
Talk to your child’s teacher frequently. Together you are a team for your child’s academic success. Provide a quiet place and a consistent time to do homework. Support your child in homework efforts but refrain from doing the homework. Help your child learn to follow directions. Give one- and two-step directions and see that the task is completed. Teach your child to show respect for others by using polite phrases such as “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me.” Model and reinforce appropriate behavior. Help your child learn his/her address and telephone number. Guide and monitor your child’s television viewing. Listen to your child and encourage your child to talk about new experiences. Explain the meaning of new words to your child. Encourage your child to succeed by encouraging his/her best work, but do not expect more than your child is capable of doing. Involve your child with reading and writing activities. See that your child gets a good night’s sleep and has a nutritious breakfast. Write your child's name on all personal items brought to school such as coat, hat, gloves, boots, sweater, lunch box, etc. Refrain from sending to school a sick child or one who has had a fever within the past 24 hours. This precaution will help preserve the health of other children. Please telephone the school when your child will be absent. Your child will need a written excuse upon returning to the classroom. Dress your child according to the weather; outside activities will take place when the weather permits. A note from you will be required if your child should remain inside because of a physical condition. Provide the teacher with a correct telephone number where parents or a family friend may be reached during the school day, in case of an emergency.
